How do you feel about albino dolls?

Feb 4, 2013

    1. I'm going to come back on in here and say that I think your gecko is leucistic / partial albino, rather than "true" albino.

Red coloration in eyes for "true" albinos comes from the blood vessels in the iris, which is normally "colored over with" other colors (brown, blue, green, etc) in normal animals. To the best of my knowledge, this is true for all animals, humans or otherwise. It's hard to get "true" albinism in humans, but it happens. More often than not, people take leucistic / partial albino animals as the true-blue thing, which I believe is the case in your gecko.

However, I might be wrong, since I haven't spent my time researching every animal's albinistic characteristics, simply because, as much as I'd like to, it'd be too hard to find actual photographed albino animals. Everyone labels their leucistics as true albino, haha. I think that the "blood = red" rule applies in all cases though, because I can't see why not. Other colors mean either blood is another color, or there's melanin involved.
A little off topic, however it coincides with the albino or not discussion. :>

    2. one of my very first BJDs was an albino, and I named him Bino. I planned on making a whole family albino, but there were and are so many beauties out there, that i decided on getting different dolls instead

    3. A leucistic Leopard Gecko looks like this:

In Leopard Gecko's, it's the black spots that lose their coloring, moreso than the other colors ontop of this. There ARE Albino Leopard Gecko's with red eyes, namely "Bell Albinos" but mine is a "Tremper Albino". The Tremper eyes are a kind of eye where the loss of pigment DOES occur, except instead of making them red or light blue, it turns them light grey. There are often red "veins" visible in tremper eyes, but in the case of my Leopard Gecko they are not there, or barely visible. I know plenty about Leopard Gecko's, seeing as I'm planning on breeding my gecko next year, and I've been keeping them for years, too! WebRep

    4. My first girls albino, she just doesn't have red or pink eyes. She has blue eyes. But she has white skin and a white wig. I didn't even think of her as albino before I saw this lol

    5. As someone else who has kept both Bell and Tremper Leopard geckos I have to agree with this. There is also rainwater albinos. If your going to question the genetics of someone's animal then it would be best to at least do a quick google search first.

Edit: Also would like to add that adult lucy Leos are gray or green-ish in color with no pattern and generally a purple-gray tail.

As for the discussion I really don't see the harm. As someone else has said if people get used to seeing them then perhaps people who do actually have it wont be treated differently.

    6. I think that dolls with albinism are pretty cool if you can keep them clean enough. I have issues just keeping a white shirt clean nevermind a whole doll. lol I'm terribly clumsy and messy in my day to day life and have enough issues keeping my regular skinned dolls cleaned never mind a pure white one... Don't get me wrong I keep my regular skinned dolls very clean etc... I think I just have this fear because me and the color white have never really gotten along... heck my wedding dress isn't even white it's ivory lmao..

    7. I did say I might be wrong, but the fact that there's different types of albino seem to file back under my partial albino argument. True ("bell") albino has no pigment whatsoever... so blue/grey/etc coloration is just reduced or a different type of pigment, primarily as a form of amelanism, or aeumelanism, when there is a faulty protein that makes melanin. They're often called albinoids and can get fairly albino looking. I'm talking about the genetic factor of albinism, not looking at it from a pet owner/breeder standpoint. I did do some googling and found your "bell" geckos, which I do believe to be, or nearly be, true albino. I've done a lot of googling, actually, about albino and otherwise of an assortment of creatures. I think it's interesting.
Like I said I haven't heard of blood being another color than red (except I think of some rare lizard, but that's details) that would accredit the irises being another color other than red for an animal with literally 0 pigment whatsoever. But I'm open to hearing about specific genetics as to why it's eyes might be blue, grey, or otherwise genetically. Because otherwise it just sounds like albinoid variations, like I said..!
I'm not trying to discredit whatever the geckos may be, because it's understandable why it might be considered "albino" by name. I'm just talking from a genetic standpoint.

edit: I think a good way to put my question is; if it is albino, why aren't its eyes red?
I'm not trying to disprove or discredit anyone or thing, it just doesnt match what I know of albinism and by all means am open to understanding why it might be different for geckos/other species, however as of now I've not been told why they have blue/grey/etc eyes vs red. I've just been told different types of gecko names.
Please understand I'm not trying to be malicious, Im just curious, haha. There are apparently 200+ gecko morphs and some seem more or less pigmented and many still are called albino, but they don't seem to be genuinely, 100% pigment free to me.

    8. @DromosMata; I wasn't the one questioning the genetics, someone else was questioning MY animals genetics. And actually, Mark Amey, a well-known UK reptile expert, currently has a Leucy gecko and it looks a lot more like the picture that I posted than grey :) I didn't mention Rainwaters because the name escaped me haha

@dogmeat; I wish I could answer why their eyes are grey. I've read an entire article on Leopard Gecko eyes and it still beats me. All I seem to ever find about albino's having non-red eyes is "Having red eyes is not a requirement in Leopard Geckos to be considered an albino." I BELIEVE its something to do with gecko's eyes having a different kind of pigmentation in it, which means that a lot of people can't tell types of gecko apart till they see the eyes. Tremper Albino and Bell Albino are often impossible to tell apart without a clear eye picture. Bell Albinos are also not "true" Albinos, they're actually the newest coloration of Albino, and before their recent discovery. There's a lot of different hybrids and strains of Bell Albino now that there's not really a "pure" or "true" version of it, just things that look like it are classified as one now.

Murphy Patternless leopard geckos are also occasionally referred to as Leucistic, but that doesn't help my gecko much as her full morph name is "Tremper Albino Murphy Patternless". So she's apparently both. But again, often normal Patternless Leopard geckos end up having "Murphy" added on the front of it, because they either look a bit like one, or it might help them sell to have a fancy name.

Blazing Blizzards also are said to have an "Albino" trait, but are thought of as being less albino than the three albino geckos with Albino in their name.

    9. I love albino dolls! I've seen a few photos and they look so surreal and unique!

    10. I think it is nice with different dolls, and albino dolls sound ike a rather cool and innovative idea to me.

    11. I like albino too. They look delicate and beautiful.

    12. I havent seen any albino dolls, but Im sure they look pretty cool OvO

    13. I agree with these posts--I don't think they're being backstory police, but just saying that albinism is a real disorder that causes health issues in people, and that white skin + white hair + red eyes is NOT actually albinism, especially in humans. From what I've read, additionally, people with albinism really dislike the word "albino" because it has a stigma...
Go ahead and have pale dolls with white hair and red eyes, but I personally think it's really insensitive to call them "albino" or say they have albinism when they really don't. :\

    14. The red color in Albino eyes is from the light bouncing off the retina in the back of the eye, not the iris. The iris in albinos can very in color as some can be light blue almost clear to other reduced pigmented colors. There are a ton of other issues albinos deal with regarding their eyes but I wont go into it since this is not a lesson in albinism.
I adore Albinos. I have met quite a few people with albinism and they have all been super sweet. Bianka is an albino who has her own website
(I forget if she is from the UK or Australia) and she answers every question you may have on albinism. There are different types and levels.
And animals also have their own types and levels. Did anyone know Siamese cats have an albino gene?
As far as dolls go, I dont write back stories. I just make them look the way I prefer. I have had one albino doll, she was a DIM Benetia. A vampire with pale blue eyes, with red pupils and white fur wig. I have since sold her but I did not see anything negative about her being albino. She was actually my first BJD and I was very fond of her. Once again, I have to agree with Jenny make up what you want it is your doll.

    15. I love albino dolls. I think that all bjds are so beautiful. I plan on eventually one day having an alligator bjd that is albino after an albino alligator that I love that I've seen a few times in the New Orleans aquarium. I'm a big fan of albino reptiles and fish.

    16. Albino dolls are beautiful, there is something about them that I can't help but love

    17. Wow, I had never seen one before but now I think I am in love! They look so... delicate. I wonder if an albino Doll Chateau girl would work...

    18. I actually have an Albino DC Bella :)

    19. I love albino dolls! I think they are sooooo pretty!! When i used to draw regulary a lot of my ocs were albino. I just think they look so beautiful and soft!! :fangirl:
