How do you feel about modifying your dolls?

Oct 8, 2013

    1. I'm Always nervous about modding my dolls-- but that hasn't stopped me from trying. My first mod was sanding a nose a tiny bit. The second was separating the fingers on a pair of Iplehouse EID hands. The most recent is the way bigger task of making my Dollmore Model F more curvy.

Even though the risk of potentially 'ruining' a doll runs very high in my thoughts, and I'm not even remotely confident in my sculpting skills, certain modding ideas get stuck in my thoughts.

    2. I love it. It actually bothers me when I haven't modded a doll in some way.

    3. Uncomfortable! Maybe one day I'll be more at ease.

    4. I generally feel cautious about modifications on dolls. The most mods I have ever done have been to my Impldoll Akasha. I made he crevice in her mouth wider, reshaped her teeth to include the fangs. I also modified her eyes and ears so that they would match a bit more.

I am currently thinking of modifying my Planet Doll David, because I really dislike the way his body is strung.

    5. I'm not a big fan of mods, to be honest.

I buy dolls because I like them as they are. I understand that people want to change the look of a doll to fit a specific character, and that's fine. I'm not opposed to people modding their dolls. I just don't really want to mod mine. I've done a few minor "cosmetic" mods, such as adding scars or piercing an ear, but that's about it.

As for "structural" or "posing" mods, I dislike those too, although I've been forced to do them on some less-than-adequate bodies. In my six years in the hobby, I've learned that not all doll bodies are created equal, and I now know which ones I like and which ones I don't. I feel like I shouldn't have to mod a body, just to enable it to sit or stand. I'd like dolls that can do at least basic movements out of the box without requiring major renovations.

So yeah... I'm not a modding enthusiast, but I respect those who are. They're your dolls, so do whatever makes you happy. :)

    6. I would like to modify one day. But I'm verry scared I'll mess up. I'm thinking of getting a cheaper doll to modify and practice on first.

    7. I would love to be able to modify a doll! I've seen some really creative modifications, and I would love to be able to do something like that. All the dolls I have bought, though, I bought because I love them as-is. I would never be able to modify them. I am thinking of buying a few cheaper practice heads to start with so that I can learn modding basics without ruining something expensive. :)
The type of modding I prefer is the artsy kind where a doll is made into something less human, if that makes sense. For instance, I really like one head which I saw which had been modified to be a broken teacup with a face, including transparent resin inside as the tea. I would love to be able to create art like that! For now, though, I'm too attached to my dolls and too afraid of ruining something expensive.

    8. Absolutely shit scared, I would rather send it off to someone who knows and make suggestions! lol

    9. I'm all for it, take the x-acto knife and a dremel and got for it. I don't even mind anymore when I poke a hole on something, just work on it.

    10. One of the things I love about this hobby is the many different aspects. I didn't really expect modding to be something I'd get into as bjds are expensive and I wouldn't want to wreck something I'd saved up so long for! But as I couldn't find tabi feet I ended up separating the toes myself. Then I shaved a tiny bit off an eyehole to even it out. Now my current project is an eye opening mod on a dreaming head I fell in love with after seeing other people's open-eyed versions. I like the idea that he will be unique. True others have done the same mod but each in a different way. Maybe some day I'll be brave enough to do something really ambitious!

    11. So far all I have done is pierced ears and never attempted anything major. That is all about to change though as I joined the Robert Downey Jr GO and intend to do Tony Stark from Avengers. A few of us have decided to drill a hole in the chest to insert an arc reactor that lights up like the one in the movies. I am not too nervous as the company is letting us buy an extra chest piece and I am going to use it. If I stuff it up well he always has his original chest. I would never attempt to mod a face (maybe something small like a scar) as I choose my dolls as I love their sculpts as they are and I do not think I would have the knowledge or skill to do it.

    12. I haven't really done anything too intensive. I dug out an Exacto knife and opened up my Edria's eyes a little bit, but my hands were definitely shaking the whole time. She still has that dreamy look to her, but I wanted it so you could see a little more of her eyes. I've got an event head here too that has a dent in his nose from his previous life that needs sanded out at some point. My MiniFee has seam lines and I'd like to get those sanded out, too. One of these days, I'll get super brave and try my hand at some fantasy modding. But for now, I'm sticking to the small stuff. xD;

    13. I’m definitely more in the nervous camp. I’ve never done any really significant mods, but I have done to a head (well two head, because I wanted a variant one). I went very slowly a little bit at a time, particularly to make sure the two were matching. But I really can’t see myself whipping out a dremel and just going to town!

    14. I'm sending my head off to be modded sometime in march, I tried to do it myself but I wimped out. I would rather have it done properly by someone with experience.

    15. I love modding. My very first boy needed some intense sanding and that sort of opened the floodgates then and there. I've opened dreaming and even completely closed eyes, pierced ears, carefully reshaped cheeks and noses to suit a need, separated fingers and toes, and fixed posing problems. I take my time and I'm careful with it, but I really don't have a lot of anxiety about it.

I'm also not against buying a modded doll. Especially in the case of well-done modifications, someone has taken a lot of time and effort to do the job, and it can be the thing that makes a sculpt go from "almost perfect" to "perfect!" for me.

    16. I really want to try modding, but for now I'm too scared. Once I get used to handling and seeing them more then I'll be ok...maybe. :)

    17. I really want to do a couple of mods, but I'm admittedly a bit nervous about it. I want to make Alba a human girl. (RS Ju) Her elf ears are too big and pointy and they drive me crazy when it comes to putting a wig on her. I would also like to give my two Minimee boy bodies jointed hips. Their legs pop right out of the socket all the time. They need hip joints or modifications or wiring or something but I haven't quite figured out how to do it as yet. There's two dolls I am seriously thinking about opening the eyes on just a little. I did not know you could use an exacto knife on resin. I thought you'd have to have a porcelain knife or something so that is pretty interesting reading that. I might try the eye thing on my little Miro guy. If I wreck his head it won't be a tragedy as I don't really like it "as is" anyway...

    18. I would love it but would be terrified to do it myself so yes if it's done by a pro but if it's just me I'd stick to tattoos or micro beads for body piercings.

    19. I have modded some of my dolls but nothing major, yet. There's just not been that much I don't like about them, so I only did some slight modding.
I like it. When it changes your doll to something you like even better then go for it. ^^

    20. I'd rather not touch my doll or I'd send the doll off to a professional. Even if I were experienced, I'd be too scared to commit mistakes. I think I'll only go as far as face-ups and sanding.
