How do you like your torso joints?

Feb 25, 2017

    1. Most of my dolls have two part torsos, which I think I prefer. Aesthetically, having the joint under the bust or pecs is the best, but in terms of mobility having it under the ribs works better.

    2. So my question is what kind of torso joints do you prefer and why?

I like. The ones. That work.

Seriously nothing makes me more disappointed in a doll with any kind of torso joint that's nearly immovable. And I have encountered a lot of these. Why make a joint at all if it's just...there for the sake of having a joint? My very first doll has a very movable upper torso break, it lets him pose so naturally among other straight-backed, immovable dolls that I hated photographing him with my other early dolls because it made them all look stiff and terrible. I hold all dolls to that standard.

Almost as bad are the ones that are so crazy they don't stay put (Popodoll I'm looking at you - that lower joint is insane), dolls with torso joints that don't lock in place and are just as useless as ones that don't move at all (old IP EIDs, it didn't matter what I did to him he would only stay completely straight), and joints that don't let a doll slouch forward, but let them arch all the way back. Just, why?

Aesthetically, I don't care at all. All that matters to me is that it works. (except for the Volks SD10. Stringing their one-part torso is a nightmare and I will have that two-part useless joint all day long because it's so much easier to string)

    3. I'm with @VampireAngel13 here - no matter how many or what types of joints - they should actually work. And there are a lot of body constructions with just some random joints that don't do much at all.

I love to put my dolls into natural poses like a slouch or bending up and down, so I like bodies with a lot of joints, even with the loss of stability in mind. (My old Hound has a serious hip popping issue which doesn't let him stand at all, but his slouch is unrivaled ;)) I prefer the chest joint under the ribcage where the body will bend naturally. If it helps posability, I also won't hesitate to mod the joints.

I also have a Volks SD10 body which has real nice aesthetics, but has been driving me nuts for more than a decade now. Even knowing that it doesn't have a joint I'm still trying to pose it …

    4. I love three-part torsos, even though most of my dolls are only two-parters. In my experience, the extra joints are no more or less likely to cause stability problems than any other kind. I've had several single-joint girls over the years that drove me crazy (Elfdoll Lydia on the older body for one). And I also know the frustration of having a doll with a joint that does nothing at all (Latidoll, I'm looking at you). So I agree with those above - joints that work, please!

    5. I have one doll with a 5 part torso (four joints). He can bend to the side, lean forward, arch his back and poses fantastically! Unfortunately, the company (Dikadoll) doesn't make the body anymore, or I'd probably buy a few more. He's seriously one of the best posers I have.

    6. I like one joint just below the ribcage. I don't think I have ever felt like I was missing out on a joint at the waist on any of my dolls. I also just like how the one joint breaks up the sculpt less

    7. I like waist joints, because the doll can pose in a relaxed way. However, as I understand and agree with @Sianserais the extra joints, especially the hip/abdomen joints can really destabilize the doll >.<

    8. I prefer three part torsos, I've found. I feel like the pose, with clothes on, looks more natural.

    9. That sounds like a dream! Do you have any pictures of him?

    10. I looked through my pictures of him, and if I do have any good posing pictures, I didn't save them on my computer (which means they're in my unorganized google photos mess... and I'm not ready to touch that). Dikadoll still has the body up on their website even though it's sold out, and it shows how well it poses. Here's the link: 70CM Male Body Ver.2 $426)(SOLD OUT)-Products-DikaDoll

    11. Maybe it's weird but at this point I don't really have a preference. I've had dolls with all the common amounts and placements of joints and I've learned that I just don't really know that much about whether I will love them based on the joint structure of the torso. I think if I have a least favorite it's the joint right under the breasts. And if I have a favorite it might actually be a soft spot for the beautiful appearance of the one piece torso. But really, as long as a doll can sit and stand in normal upright positions without problems, I'm happy and I just like each doll for their strengths.
