How do you name your dolls?

Mar 14, 2020

    1. One of the names I used was just a name that I really liked off a name website. It had no special meaning to me, but it suited her. Another time I used a name from one of my childhood video games. It takes me about a week or more sometimes to get a name I like.

    2. i tend to have a nickname i call my dolls before i actually figure out what there names will be, i don't have a naming convention or anything like that honestly i don't even think about it much i'm happy to use the nickname i give them until something that fits them comes to me.
it's pretty funny actually i name everything, toys, electronics, furniture, miscellaneous junk but my actually characters i create almost never have names

    3. I find it very exciting to see how some of the people here choose the names :D

For me it is relatively easy because my two boys are my and my friends OCs who are most important to me :3

If there are more to come, I will also choose/name them according to my existing book characters :D

    4. I'm awful with coming up with names. A lot of names I've come up with are scrambled up versions of other names or ones I've liked from a site that lists names with the meanings behind them. I've also used a book or dictionary and just pointed randomly at letters to try and come up with something xD;;;

If nothing works, whatever needs a name will just be nameless until I come up with something.v Sometimes I'll ask friends and family for their opinions and they may or may not work out.

    5. Oh, it's a chaotic mess. XD I have used real-life names I like, named dolls after characters in novels, made and named actual character dolls, made up names, used random foreign words...and then things just got weird. I named one doll after a hurricane, and another after a typing application (but it's also a pun). Food items? Why not, nothing is off the table anymore! My most "out there" name may be "Fishlips II," given to my Notdoll Belladonna hybrid. (If you've ever seen a Belladonna, trust me, the name makes sense.)

    6. I don't know. I guess it is sort of similar to naming a child or a pet. Most times, I get a feeling of what to name my dolls right away. Sometimes, I need to mull it over for a few weeks or a few months. Other times, I take a year or more to figure out what to name one.

    7. I tend to come up with a name as I write the backstory or story about the character the doll will become. Sometimes I get a name by searching name databases and just stumbling upon one I like. Or I try and find one with a specific meaning, from a location/country or by the sound of the syllables.

    8. Ahhh it's so hard to describe but I usually just wait for a "vibe"!! Sometimes I know beforehand, like when I have a specific character in mind, but sometimes it's just a name that "sticks". My latest girl is named Fennel, and she's been through a lot of "trial" names, but Fennel was the one that fit best.

    9. I stare at them, or a picture of them and try to think of names that I think they "look like". I have also used the baby name genie because I like frustrating him lol

    10. I'm pretty bad at coming up with names for them, but I usually just wait until I think of one! The downside is that it sometimes takes me waaaaay too long to think of one that will stick, my favorite doll doesn't even have a name yet.

    11. I get mostly inspired by nature, language, and other countries. I've always loved the Scandinavian area, their languages, architecture, history... I just thoroughly enjoy it <3 So learning more about that area, really introduces me to beautiful names I obviously never hear in America. I named my Dust of Dolls Korë, Sigrún.

    12. Some of mine are named (and styled after-) my roleplayed MMO and tabletop RPG characters...

Others end up with names that fit in with the "theme" of the group they're a part of. The Division of Endings, for instance, all have Egyptian names (Osiris, Eset, Anubis, Maat and company-). Gaia's five god-beasts are all named after birds (Crow, Kingfisher, Crane and their brothers-). The Machine City androids are named for their function (Oracle, Mender-)

...And, of course, there are some of the gang who just have random names that seemed to suit them. My first pair (Harumatsu and Tien Jen) were like that.

So, yeah. We're sort of all over the place over here.

    13. I usually use the official name until something comes to mind that I like, but sometimes the official name kind of sticks. I think Lilia will stay Lilia since it's been a few months now. If I have a certain theme in mind and want ideas baby names sites are helpful for inspiration. I like to see the meaning and origin too, though it's not usually the deciding factor. I have a name picked out for a doll I'm waiting on but I don't want to commit till I've spent some time with her. If it doesn't work out I'll keep it in my back pocket for another one probably.

    14. Names come to me when they come, honestly. I don't shell my dolls into pre-existing characters, and I've found that trying to name them before they've arrived and settled in is pointless because I end up completely changing it later. I don't mind having a doll be nameless for some weeks (and in particular cases, even some years!) before something finally "clicks." I do this with all my doll collections, not just my BJDs, so I think it's just how my creative process works.

    15. My first boy Is a character doll, so the name is already set for him. It' still not clear if I want to call him Alex or Alexi or something else, so my second doll have not got a name yet. My only girl DC Laney Is named Laney Jane after Warrant's Jani Lane. I think I just too inspired by music. And like to play with words and names. But I really not tortutring myself to name them.

    16. I usually go with names that "feel" right. Whatever name I end up using is something that I determine for them long before they arrive and I'll be referring to the doll as their name when I'm making notes for things like fashion, silhouette, faceup, wig, that kind of stuff. By the time they get here, I'm already used to calling them by whatever I've named them. I've mentioned this before but I don't tend to buy dolls unless they inspire a character in me or they are perfect to shell one of my comics characters.

    17. I dont have a hard or set rules, but I only have one doll and another on its way. But I actually figured out their names and design last night!

It really came out because their designs clicked for me and that led to realizing what their names would be. I basically just looked up the word that applied in the language the applied, and it seemed to work in this case. XD

    18. So I dont think I'm weird, I'm sure many people do this, but I sometimes watch anime and fantasize about it. weather i put myself in it or rearrange stuff. I also play video games. I usually combine characters and add my own and visualize how they look thus making me want a doll to make that fantasy come true.

As of now I'm getting 2 female twins. Dollnoize Wrait, and Envy and Nikki.
I had a ''Say i love you'' and "blue spring ride'' anime thing going with my dolls. Gave them their own backstory, names, personalities. I have so much free time on my hands I've carefully done it haha.

    19. None of mine have names yet except the brand new girl I'm hoping will be here for my birthday. I like experiment with them so far and find who they are first and then I'll find what their names are. Until then, they're stuck with their sculpt names.

    20. I always have a list of names I've "collected" over the years, I hold my phone up next to my dolls and scroll through them, never failed to pick a name. (so far)

I see the name, I like it, I hoard the names :evilplot:
