Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. How important is it to you to be "the first owner"?

Jul 21, 2020

    1. It doesn't matter to me, there are positive things about being 1st, 2nd or 3rd (and more) owner.

    2. Most of my dolls are secondhand, and I prefer secondhand. They don't have the new resin smell which I dislike, and it's fun to see other people's faceups and guessing the personality and history. I didn't get the special first owner feeling with new dolls, but it's fun to start with a blank canvas that's full of potential.

    3. Not important at all, all I have is second hand dolls and actually I feel joy in restoring them! I'm pretty new at the hobby and I'm still afraid to mess them up ;; But if they are second hand it's not that difficult to me to modify them without feeling guilty haha

    4. Although I have only bought heads second hand and I am the first owner of most of my BJDs, it doesn't matter to me if the doll is pre owned as long as it is in good condition. I can think of a number of Peakswoods that I would like to own second hand as they are mainly the dolls that I collect. I certainly wouldn't mind coming across a Dollmore Catish doll as I have liked them since I first saw them at Dollism in Buffalo.

    5. It doesn't matter to me at all as long I know the doll's providence.

    6. Doesn’t matter to me. I love secondhand dolls I have a mix of new and used dolls
As long as they legit and all damages (if there are any) are brought up I don’t care

    7. It doesn't matter to me. I bought both new dolls and secondhand dolls. When I don't want to wait too long i'll buy secondhand doll.

    8. I never even thought about this. I actually don’t care if I am the first or 10th owner. As long as it’s a legit doll I love and comes with a certificate of authenticity :3nodding: All authentic dolls deserve to have a home :D

    9. It has no bearing on my decision to purchase as long as it is a legit doll with the COA.
A lot of the dolls I am currently after are not available to purchase direct from the artist anymore so being able to purchase second hand would be wonderful.

    10. It's not of too particular of importance to me it I receive them new or secondhand. Some cases secondhand might be the only option. What matters most for me is that they arrived in a workable condition for the character I plan to shell them with. For some, secondhand is preferable due to modding reasons (ones I plan to make, or mods done by the previous owner).

So, yeah—it all just depends on the circumstances:kitty2

    11. As long as the doll isn't damaged in a way that requires fixing in order to make it structurally sound, I don't mind being the second or third, etc, owner. I'm usually the first owner, but only because I tend to like dolls not many people buy. At the moment, I have a secondhand MSD full doll and two secondhand heads, one MSD and one SD.

    12. I've no preference. While I love the excitement of a brand new doll, I also enjoy the challenge of making a second hand doll "my own". The wonderful tutorials that people have posted over the years taught me not to be afraid of "project dolls".

    13. I don't feel like I need to be.
If a certain doll has spoken to me and I feel a pull towards it, I will get it new or used.

My grail doll is definitely only obtainable used, and most likely yellowed at this point, but I'm okay with it because I adore her so much.

    14. I think second hand dolls have a certain charm to them, especially when they're fixer-uppers or project dolls. Its fun to rebody them and clean them up a bit and restyle. Also the price point for second hand can be cheaper *sometimes* than newer dolls. When I buy second hand dolls I find it interesting to see if I'm the second or third owner of something. There's definitely that wonder of "who were they before?"

    15. At first I thought it was very important for me to be the first owner due to the fear of germs of second hand items and not being sure how to clean second hand items, but after being in the hobby for about I think 3 years or 4 years I think it really depends now. Some dolls I still want to be the first doll owner and have it brand new because I think i will really want this doll for life and don't want the extra added stress of too many germs, but for some company dolls I think I wouldn't mind paying second hand and learning how to clean the doll well. I think some dolls might come my way, but I might not absolutely love the doll because I was hesitant on a particular doll or perhaps the company isn't my favorite and i might want to pay a "cheaper" price for it.

    16. It doesn't matter.

When I first started collecting I though it was awesome to have them all shiny and new. Nothing beats that fresh smell of resin. When I used to buy second hand, I wanted them almost new, and if the doll is practically new I don't mind paying the cost price for it. Owners remorse happens, and sometimes I was looking at the doll, and the person beat me to that 'buy button', so if they want to resale, I am there for it.

The more dolls I get, the more I look to second hand dolls. I actually enjoy wiping off the damaged, or badly done faceup and putting my own on it, cleaning up the doll, and restringing if necessary. I little bit of modding also doesn't bother me if it's something I like. A second hand doll can be a fun project. I love a good project doll.

One thing I insist on, is if the company makes COA's it is included, no copies of the COA either, I don't trust that. The moment I see a doll, that I know was recasted, and it's being sold without a COA, I move right on past it. I also meticulously compare the body of the doll with the company body. If the seller says it's an old body, I am going to look up the older body from that company and see if it matches. If I can't find a match for the body and it doesn't match any company pictures, or past pictures of other owners, I will also pass on the second hand doll. The one thing I want guaranteed when I buy second hand is that the doll is legit.

    17. As half my collection is secondary market dolls, it would be fair to say that being the first owner isn't my priority ;)

    18. I don't care about that at all. Once it arrives on my doorstep I completely customize it to my liking and it is fully mine both in ownership and concept. I actually prefer buying certain dolls second hand if the company has long shipping times. I'd rather wait 4 days than 6months+

    19. As long as a doll is legitimate with proper COA and in good condition, I don't care if I've purchased new or second hand. I've done both, but my current crew (with 1 exception) were all purchased second-hand, from friends. The exception being a doll I purchased directly from the artist. All of them were wonderful transactions. I had fun painting and customizing the dolls to my tastes and I love them all.

That said, what with rising costs (including shipping), I've found that I now prefer buying on the second hand market. It can be a bit challenging trying to find exactly what I want, but it's well worth the hunt.

    20. I don't mind getting a doll second hand, as long as it's in good condition still. I do love the feeling of getting a brand new doll though and being its first home. It all ultimately depends, for me, on if I like the sculpt. If I can get it new that's great, but if second hand is the only option then that's cool too ^^
