How Important to You Is It That Your Doll be Absolutely Unique?

Mar 28, 2010

    1. How important to you is it that your doll be absolutely unique?
Not very, but it depends on the circumstances.

      Why?
Currently I only have full set dolls, so I know there are other people out there who have the exact same doll. I'm so not bothered about that. These are my dolls, and the dolls of others are not really my concern. If I meet people with the same doll, I might even have fun posing them together as "twins". But if I had something modded for some reason, then I would be irritated if it were to be copied by someone else, especially if it's someone I knew.
But no two dolls are the same anyway, becasue each manages to have some sort of different personality, depending on the hair and eyes and faceups they have. :)

    2. It will be nice to say I have a limited issue doll and let other see it to see the difference.
      But is it important? NO!
I still think unique as it may in the long run it's still is a doll albeit more expensive but other than that it makes no difference unless it can dress itself or perform something other regular ones can't.

    3. For me it's important that my dolls are unique for me and whats make them unique is the character and the looking that I give them, not if its a limited edition or a fullset or a standard edition :)

    4. I think if I know how to do face-up myself, I will give my all my doll with differentt look. I love having a unique doll and taking lots of picture with them.

    5. I could'nt care less if my doll was Ooak or not really. I have never met another doll-person in real life (yet), so however I twist and turn it my doll is quite unique. At least when I have her at home, making her clothes and face ups etc.

I mean, I want a beautiful doll that I like, and if that means that I have the same doll as every other doll owner in Sweden.. So be it. As long as I like the look of it.

    6. I don't purposefully go for the unique thing, but most of the molds I have aren't that common and the common mold I do have ended up blue... D:
Somehow I always end up with dolls that are a little different than most. Their stories are very common (a ghost/banshee, a leannan Sidhe, and elf, etc) but when styling them I do always look for clothing that's uncommon. Mostly because I wear uncommon clothes myself and because 90% of the bjd clothing out there just isn't to my taste.
So I don't set out to make them unique, and I could be perfectly happy with a very generic doll, but I just prefer to give my own twist to them. And my taste is just a bit off ;D

    7. Sure, it'd be cool to say that you own a very special doll, OOAK which no one else possesses. But to me that's not a main reason for me to buy or not to buy a doll.

The girl I own has the factory default face-up and default eyes. I still love her to bits. I see a lot of other sculpts of my girls out there, but this still doesn't make my girl any less special. In contrary, it even inspires me what else I can do with my doll. Even if you have a more common doll you can still individualise it. The way you dress him/her, change his/her wig or eyes and the personality you give your doll still makes it an unique doll.

    8. I see a doll in a shop. I imagine what her character is/could be like. When the doll sculpt speaks to me I get it. Sometimes this doll then stays like she was on the company sites and sometimes is changed completely. I don't really care if it then resembles another doll here on DoA or if it really is unique that much. It's still my doll and can't be 100% like any other.

    9. I like to do my own faceups, it is important that their face is unique and looks exactly as it should for their character. If their character looks like someone else's doll, so be it, that's just the way it is. XD;

    10. Well, I'm just getting into this, but...

How important to you is it that your doll be absolutely unique?

It is and isn't at the same time. Sounds strange and probably is, but I see it like this: I see a doll, I fall in love with the doll, I WANT THAT DOLL! I don't care how many other's want the same one. The moment it is mine, it is mine and once I'm done adjusting it to my wishes with clothes and name and background story, it's already unique on it's own, that's enough for me. I can't believe that there will ever be two completly identical dolls around, unless it's those of the collectors, who buy fullsets and never even think about changing anything about them.
I'm interested in one fullset at the moment, cause that doll is perfect the way he is for what I want, but I still think he'll be unique due his history and name and relationships with other dolls :3

      Why?

      Bascially explained above.
I believe each doll is unique, just like humans are unique. Even twins are never the same - even if sometimes it's only their name making the difference. Latest when they grow older, develop and gain live experiences, the differences will develop. :3
      That's what I think anyway.

    11. How important to you is it that your doll be absolutely unique?

      Not very.

      Why?

I would never outright copy a unique idea belonging to someone else (I'm a very prideful person, and doing so would be very disrespectful and tasteless), but I also wouldn't fret if my doll happened to turn out looking a bit like another. It's a big hobby, and I feel some similarities can't be helped. I wouldn't go out of my way to change a doll I was happy with just because it was similar to another.

I think being creative is important. However, I think forcing yourself to be creative just because you're afraid of copying someone is just as bad as intentionally copying someone's idea. I think doing what you will be happiest with is what matters most.

    12. To be honest... I don't think I will know the answer to this until the day I actually find a doll that's completely identical to my own. I don't think I would care too much, though. Of course I would notice it, then laugh and say "Well, what are the odds for that? XD". I wouldn't accuse a person of copying my doll unless they said it right out that that's the reason they made the doll like that. And if they did copy my doll because they liked it so much, I would think it was flattering and even though they copied the look of the doll, the character and feel of it wouldn't be the same no matter what.

I would never copy a doll right out myself, but I do sometimes draw inspiration from other dolls I find on this forum and around the internet. But I usually just see a mold I like, find a character within that mold (whether it's a new character or one of my already existing OCs), get the doll, and make them into what I had in mind. When that is done the doll already is unique and one-of-a-kind to me. And if there is some other doll out there with the same or similar look, then the person who owns it has great taste ;)

I feel I'm talking a lot here, but bottom line is: No. It isn't so important to me how unique my dolls are as long as I'm happy with them myself. :D

    13. I'm more concerned about this in relation to character development- and then only on my part. I'd hate to think I came up with a whole new idea for my doll's character and then find out that it's someone else's invention. Other then that, it doesn't bother me that my dolls aren't completely unique. Nobody's dolls are really.

    14. I don't think it's to important if some, or many people have the same sculpt as me. Color, hair color, whatever!
I think the point of this hobby is giving everyone the chance to take something that many may have, and making it your own. I always find it really interesting to see what others have done to the dolls that I have, just because its amazing how much a sculpt can change.

    15. In certain ways, I want my doll to be completely unique.

      Why, you say?

I strive to be unique. I don't like blending in with the crowd, though I'm not an intense non-conformist either(considering they're also blending in with ANOTHER crowd xD). I feel like unique characteristics make the dolls who they really are. I think that's what makes them truly beautiful.

    16. First of all Pikachu_Sweetie: Love your Avatar Reid is sooo awsome...!!!!

I think all the dolls no matter what their sculpt or face or hair and earrings or whatever are all unique.
They are all unique because no one person is excatley the same. That uniqueness comes out when the doll is brought home and u add your little touches. I have a friend who has several of the same sculpts I have and she had them first...but none of htem look anything alike or have similar personalities. Often people ask what sculpt they are and then find out they are same. Its all in the little things.

    17. Some of my dolls aren't going to be 100% unique because they're based on well-known characters. so I'm basically copying someone else to begin with. With the wigs, the eyes, the faceups, how I dress them and the backstories I've given them they're unique enough.

What I'm drawing a line at though is recently a friend of mine saw a doll I own (a limited Event-only gift doll), admired it, and found it on the Marketplace. She's now sending it to a faceup artist with a picture of my doll to duplicate the look, finding the exact same eyes, and has tried to tell friends of ours she had the doll first. I've owned the doll for almost a year.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I think this may be taking that concept a little too far.......

    18. I get my dolls based on how they relate to the mental picture I already have for my characters, so I am not interested in being completely different. And even if you get the same sculpt, a doll can be completely different. My friend Sand-Kitten has a DZ Shoyo, as do I and they couldn't look less alike.

    19. How important to you is it that your doll be absolutely unique?
To be honest I havent never thought of this, but bringing up the topic I think that you dont HAVE to have a completely unique doll. Then again I find it rare to come across two dolls that are COMPLETELY the same. even if they are wearing the same clothes and are the same sculpt sometimes they do apeear quite different in person.

If my boy looked exactly the same as another, I proabably would be slightly irked but I dont feel that its a big deal.
      Why?

    20. The only person I'm close to that also collects BJDs is my wife, and we like completely opposite dolls (she likes cute little frilly girls and anthros, and I like sexy boys and bishounen). I wouldn't want to have the same dolls she does, though. For one thing, it would feel like a waste of money, having two of the same thing. Although she does have an idea to make twins and I kind of love that. hehe.. Even if we had the same doll we'd no doubt get different hair and eyes. We have different doll tastes so it all works out great.
