How Important to You Is It That Your Doll be Absolutely Unique?

Mar 28, 2010

    1. I think every doll it's unique, unless of-course you buy a full-set whit all and makeup included, but personally I never do that, I always buy a doll somewhere, then the eyes I like and the wig somewhere else, the clothing it's sometimes buoyed, and sometimes handmade at home, the shoes also.., and mostly I do my own makeups, so I really don't think there are any dolls like mine in the world, (or at very least it will be very odd to find one exactly the same), but I don't see it as an important issue itself, if it's unique, then ok, I'm glad, but if it's not, that wouldn't stop me for loving them... ;)

    2. I don't see any problem with having a common mold, even if I (and a lot of people I know) buy the same one with the same make-up. When I get a doll it is because it meets my beauty ideal. I know my ideal might not be everyone's ideal, but I know I'm not completely alone. It would be very hard for me to find an absolutely unique doll. :P Besides, even if my doll isn't completely unique I wouldn't get it if I didn't know I'd love it.

    3. I have two SDs and one MSD. One of the SDs is a limited edition Elfdoll, so not completely unique. The other SD is a Luts with a unique face up and body blushing. My MSD is a complete one of a kind (made by a artist to my specs). I love unique dolls and would have all of them as OOAKs but that is not easy. The reason is quite staightforward I like a doll made exactly the way I want and that invariably means one of a kind.

    4. Sure, I would actually love it if my doll was rather unique but in truth, I don't really care if someone has the same sculpt as me. I just don't see any point in having a fuss over it since there will ALWAYS be at least one person with the same sculpt as me. But from what I've seen, not every doll with the same sculpt looks EXACTLY the same. XD I actually can't recognize a lot of them. So, the only time I would really want my doll to be unique is mainly through clothes, faceups and style of wigs. ^^

    5. It's very important to me that my doll be unique, but not because of his sculpt. Like what a lot of other people have said, a doll's look and personality (based on clothes and style) is more dependent on the work done after the doll has been sculpted. Faceups, clothes, wigs, accessories, even the poses the doll is typically put in forms the doll's "personality" and makes it unique.

Also, it seems to me that it is this later personalization of the doll that should matter most. After all, if you're buying a sculpt and not casting one yourself, then it's the later work that is really your own to be proud of.

    6. I don't really care if my doll is absolutely unique to other dolls. I was in a similar situation, when my friend was searching for a doll she found on ebay that was modeling wigs, but couldn't find the model/brand name of the doll. So she searched on other sites, and eventually came upon a doll that I was planning to get and she looked very similar to the one that my friend wanted. I wasn't in the least bit phased. In fact, I found it great! "We would have twin dolls!!" is how I thought of it. But she found the model and then proceeded to get her instead.

And then in another situation where I'm worried about copying the way a doll LOOKS on promo pictures or someone else's pictures? I'm not too worried about it. In fact, if I enjoy the way a promo pic looks and I'm interested in purchasing the wig with it, and perhaps the outfit, I would do it. I'd only be worried about some person commenting that I stole their doll look if I were to do something similar to a look that another person had.

I also find it very hard to settle on just ONE look for my dolls, so it's hard to imagine them not being unique... but I always remind myself that "there is probably someone else out there somewhere who thought of doing this before". And there are other people out there who buy the very same doll. I'm not the only one with this mold. (Unless it was a super rare limited mold that was only made once XD then that argument is invalid.)

    7. I'm one of those who doesn't like to merge with the crowd so I guess this will reflect upon my dolls when I get down to making them look more personal. If a mold I really like is insanely popular (like one in every five doll owners have one. But especially if someone I know well already has him/her) even if I really like the doll, chances are, I'll find another one to make my own and I wouldn't like them any less because of that.

On the other hand, I'm contradicting myself in saying that since I'm always more than excited to see what other owners have done or are doing with their dolls of the same molds I have or plan on getting.

Also, I do believe that every person's styles and their own sense of beauty makes the same molds different. Unless they get the same doll as someone else they see with the notion of copying exactly what that other doll has done, they will stand out for being a separate being.

    8. Well, our dolls are always different, even if we are owning not-limited ones. We dress them differently, and do all the other things to them in our own style, so it's almost impossible that someone would have exactly the same doll.
To me, it seems nice that so many people around the world shares their lives with dolls similar to mine. I even collect the photographs of "my" dolls, that are posted by other people; it's always interesting to see how the same dolls look in somebody else's hands.

    9. It means nothing to me. My friends & I often have the same dolls & none of us seem to have any problem with it. In fact, I'm flattered when someone sees a doll I have & gets the same one. It's called enabling, folks.

And has been said, no two dolls look exactly the same anyway as each person brings their own sense of style & vision to a doll even without custom face-ups or mods. And even if someone bought the exact same outfit, wig & eyes as my doll wore it wouldn't bother me. Once again, I'd be flattered to think that my interpretation of that doll was liked well enough to be copied.

    10. interesting topic. personally i'd like unique dolls, however if i got the same as someone else, so long as i don't know the doll mine should end up with a personality of it's own. i do feel however if i was to get some of the other dolls i have seen that they would just end up like a copy of that one rather than a doll of my own.
I also really enjoy the idea of owning limiteds. the idea that not many people will own the one i have makes it extra special. ^^

    11. I love the idea of OOAK and unique dolls, I do not want my baby to be exactly like everyone else's! D: that would be sad, that is why I think modding doesn't devalue the doll, as long as you are keeping it with you its entire life or yours :D

    12. It's important for my doll to be unique as a whole, not by every detail. Even if Volks Tony were an unlimited model, mine is still unique because no one will have the same appearance, same clothing style and same attributed personality. Likewise, even the unlimited sculpts I own are still wholly unique. No one will have a DOD Wi named Leuca who has the same appearance and personality as my Leuca! And no one will love my doll as much as I do : ) Unique.

    13. When I was first getting into the hobby, uniqueness was a big deal for me. I wanted my dolls to be really unique and different. Now, I don't mind it so much. In fact, I'm thinking morely about having a default company face-up or two. Sure, they'll look like every other doll of their sculpt, but I've realized that with the gigantic number of sculpts in the world, all of them are pretty unique. Besides, sometimes people in real life have "doubles" that they aren't aware of, so why not with dolls?

    14. But nothing. Remove that whole "unless" clause, and then you've got it! I have many fullset dolls who are nonetheless totally unique-- because nobody else who bought that same fullset has done the same thing to that doll as I have. Sometimes I meet another fullset doll from the same release, & they may look very close, but never quite identical... think of it as meeting two different guys who happen to be wearing the same makeup.

Or, to bring it closer to home: think of it as meeting 5,000 girls who are all wearing the same Neo-80s hairstyle, the same Gucci-knockoff purse, the same stretch jeans, and the same goddamned Ugg boots, yet still claim to be all different people. xD Whenever I pass by an H&M or Forever 21 store, all I can think of is how it looks like an unlimited basic-stock doll release in there. They may all be Xeroxes of each other at a glance, but they're actually all unique creatures who happen to be of the same genus, species, and subspecies.

    15. None of the sculpts I own are unique; in fact most are non-limiteds. My FCS is an F-22 - not even a Sato-only mold. Dollshe doesn't make Hounds anymore, but Hound wasn't limited whilst in production so Hounds aren't exactly rare; and my Vampire Breakaway 05 certainly is not the only one I've seen here on DoA.

But all my dolls are unique in their own ways, due to the fact that I did their face-ups and mods myself, and I make all their clothes. Some have custom eyes; several have eyes which I made myself. So I'm confident that whilst there are literally hundreds of Shiwoos out there, not one of them looks like my Eric, for instance. Oh, I'm sure there are many with long red hair and green eyes; some might even have the exact same Cancan J-Series wig as him. But he's the only one with eyebrows that exact shape and shade, and four raised scars over the right eye, and custom green Masterpiece eyes - one with a blind pupil - made to that exact design (because I designed them myself and they used my artwork to create them), and a lip-ring, and his ears pierced in that precise fashion - and that makes him unique. Now, if someone were to take a NS Shiwoo, exactly copy the style of Eric's scars, his face-up, and give him green eyes - one with a white pupil - and put him in that exact same style of wig, then yes - that would bother me, because they would be very obviously trying to copy Eric. If you're going to go to those lengths to customise a doll, you should be capable of coming up with your own character and making your own unique doll.

It's not happened thus far with Eric (though I've seen a MNF Shiwoo that was sporting 4 scars over the right eye that looked very similar to Eric's, complete with green eyes :|), but I'm aware of someone having tried to commission a friend to mod a Breakaway 05 head to look just like my Perseus. My friend refused the commission, but it still disturbed me, particularly as she'd attempted to involve Perseus in one of her own RP storylines and I'd refused to get involved because I wasn't comfortable with the extreme sexual nature of her RPing style. Evidently she'd decided to create a Perseus clone to involve in her storylines anyway, which was a very uncomfortable feeling. :|

    16. How important to you is it that your doll be absolutely unique? Why?
Not important at all, I honestly don't care one bit for my dolls to be unique in the first place. I could be just as happy owning my doll if there were millions of others exactlylike it or not. I loved all my Barbies as a child, no matter that there were literally billions of the same release of that edition of Barbie world-wide, BJDs are no different for me.What dolls other people have and what they do with their dolls has nothing to do with how much I enjoy my doll. Even if we all do the exact same thing with our dolls, even if they all have the same appearance, the same name, the same 'personality' and all that; nothing about how I enjoy my doll will change.

    17. i don't care about sculpts because even if you have the same exact sculpt as someone you can make it different, lets say you want a bobobi mei (although not rare she proves my point) , almost everyone seems to have one anymore, you can look through and almost every single one has differences. but that is how it is on rare sculpts too because no two dolls are the exact same unless you make them to be, or someone directly copies off of your doll and copies EVERYTHING you do with them.

    18. I don't consider it a big deal to me. I happen to own a few popular molds but no matter how you cut the cake, unless someone is purposely trying to make a carbon copy if your doll, it will never be exactly the same. It's been reiterated a lot by other people, but they are all different in their own ways, even among the same sculpt.

It doesn't bother me if their "character" isn't the only one like it either. I like their personas they way they are, which so happens to be relatively normal and possibly common on some points. I'm not going to make up some ridiculous backstory about how my doll was birthed by manatees in his second life, just so it will stand out and be ~*~snowflake unique~*~.

While I do think exclusivity may be a big deal for some people, I would prefer to enjoy the hobby without agonizing over whether or not my doll is unique enough.

    19. Its no big to me, because I feel its really impossible to be COMPLETELY unique. My dolls are actually quite generic looking...but they're characters that exist in a real world RP setting, so I didn't want them to look too crazy.:sweat But the characters I instill in my dolls have their own personalities, and I find that it helps to differentiate them from others.

    20. Uniqueness isn't really a big issue for me, since my dolls - and the characters they're based off of - are fairly standard. If I had a dollar for every other blue-eyed redhead I'd seen on the boards, I'd have a few more dolls than I have right now, for instance; but that doesn't mean I don't love my Niall, or love him any less.

To be really cliche, I'm even planning on a few elf-eared dolls with vaguely absurd names. Hardly something you could call unique!
