How Important to You Is It That Your Doll be Absolutely Unique?

Mar 28, 2010

    1. I don't really care about uniqueness of the sculpt (despite possible appearances ^^;;;;; ), uniqueness is given by each owner's feelings and love for a doll.

    2. As far as dolls are concerned -- Uniqueness is in the eye of the beholder. I care only that I make my dolls mine. When I stop seeing the sculpt and start seeing my character... that means the doll has become my own. Of course, I'd be flattered if others could see a picture of Syr or Alérion and immediately say, "That's Syr/Alérion, and she belongs to Vega (aihre)!" But as long as I know my dolls are mine, as long as I look at their faces and see the characters alive and vibrant, that's all I need.

    3. Individuality is deffinatly important to me. I would hate to go to a meet and see a doll that looked just like mine, just as I would be embarrased turning up to a party in the same dress as someone else XD
I wouldnt mind having the same sculpt but more if they had done the same kinds of things with there doll. I guess I would feel like I wasnt inventive enough to come up with something original

    4. Personally I really think every doll is unique because even if two people have the same sculpt they are unique
I always find no two dolls look the same cause owners customise their dolls so differently that you know sometimes i find
myself thinking "Omg is that the same doll? :S"

    5. In my opinion I think even though some doll share the same sculp that does not make a doll ununique. Because everyone dress the doll differently and non of it is identical the same.

    6. Every doll has potential to be unique. Sanding, modding, different clothes, face ups... every doll has potential on the outside.

I feel that character-wise, this is important, too. I hear a lot of stories about people's dolls and they all kind of run in very similar fashions. If I have a character who legitimately needs to be this way too, then so be it, but I do try to make my doll unique enough that they don't actually fit as well as the others. Like, they have potential to span a range of sterotypes and ideas, never really staying in one in particular.

    7. I think that giving your doll it's own character alreaddy makes it unique. Yes there can always be two doll from the same sculpt with the same 'character', but also the feelings the owner has about the character, the interpretation he/she gives to it, makes every doll unique in his or her way.

    8. I've never been worried about any of mine being unique. They're what I want them to be, I'm not going to stress over the little things.

    9. With different face ups , eyes, and wigs and outfits, a sculpt can look completely different than another. Besides, it's if you like the doll that matters. It's nice to have a rare doll but not imperative in my opinion.
As long as you enjoy the dolls you have-that's the joy of dolls.

    10. I discovered that BJds are quite unique even if you get the same sculpt with the same face up of other people.. they have a sort of "personality" themselves..
I think this is the magical aspect of the hobby which captured me , when I entered the hobby!
Anyway, it's important to me (due to this "personality" the dolls shows) getting a customizable doll (such as blank face) to let her/him become what she/he wants XD

    11. That's the relationship and the soul of the owner, his attitude to the hobby, the style, the spirit of the place where the doll lives that influences the dolls' image most of all. Moreover, a BJD can be justly seen as an amazing work of art. that's how it meant to be that even the twin sculpts are often different and unlike one another.
So I would not worry about that, though my friends who have popular dolls like Zaoll-girls or Dollmore male Models would sometimes react really sharply - if it comes to the dolls' make-up and styling..

    12. Uniqueness is very important to me, but not when it comes to the sculpt. To me, doll sculpts are like a blank canvas, and I'd like to paint my own picture one them.

    13. I actually am going through having my friend want the same doll I have. x3;; At first she wanted an AS Momo, then she switched to wanting an AS Leira, which is what I have. For some reason, I almost had a heart attack. D: I don't know why. Maybe it was the thought of possibly getting our girls mixed up and taking the wrong one home. Then she got to saying she wanted the Halloween version and I felt a bit better. She likes the freckles and prefers the milk-pink skin. x3;
I think so long as they aren't TWINS I'll be fine.

    14. I know I've probably answered here before, but I've actually been thinking about this for the past week. I like having dolls that are similar to what I find acceptable - like dressed 'normally', with pretty "normal" lives, names, etc,... but I realized that I do like to throw a 'curve ball' into things, too.

I don't want unique sculpts, but I'm completely open to other kinds of uniqueness - like names. I love giving my characters names that would never have been first on my list. Names I've never even considered (though not completely 'out there', either), like Magnolia, Mackenzie... names that I never really thought about that tend to just pop into my head. It starts as a 'what if I called her...' and then the name just seems to latch on. I sometimes have a bad habit of giving my dolls pretty 'normal' names such as Maria, or Steven, or David.

Same with character, too. Like, I had originally planned on my dolls having normal, ho-hum lives that are very similar to mine. But I think it even cooler when I can make a doll a total metal head, or a goth, or a pilgrim, or a princess. I can do just about anything with the right fabrics, some research, and the right sculpt.

So, while I've said that it doesn't take much to create a unique doll (because it's true), I've come to the conclusion that it's equally easy to find yourself in a pattern of creating very similar dolls. This is why I liked the fact that my doll came before her character. I don't feel limited, and if I'm not looking for a doll to fit a specific mold, I can explore all my choices. I can change my mind. I feel that it would probably reduce the chances of not bonding with my doll if I leave it all up to chance. I can work with it if my doll's sculpt isn't what I expected. Maybe the nose is too big or too pointy? I figure I can't control how other people look, and having my doll with maybe an unexpected feature just allows me to explore its potential more.

My favorite part about the BJD hobby is the planning phase, anyway.

    15. I have thought about it myself. If I won a big amount of money I would buy a limited one not because I want an unique one but because they are more beautifull then normal ones. But I must say that Everyone makes her or his doll unique by giving it a name and outfit. But indeed I would be a bit annoyed if I met someone in person with the Same doll!

    16. I tend to buy the same sculpt more than once, and I have found even the blank factory ones look slightly different from each other--the nose will be slightly to one side, the overall head might be a tiny bit smaller--so I think you would never have true "twins" the way Barbies are. That is the thing I love about bjds--how unique each one is!

    17. I don't really see the use in striving for absolute originality. Once you've done it and shared it, it's no longer new and it's no longer original. My horror mod dolls are pretty original and yet they are still "one of those horror/gore mod dolls".

    18. it doesnt matter to me if a doll has a "twin" somewhere esle.

    19. What's important to me is to be happy about the doll n feel it's worth it - time, money. It have to make me have unique feelings about it, but it doesnt require unique look. U fill the doll up, the story, name, choice of clothes, style, taking pictures - that's what make it very unique from one to another. It's like to buy a dress and put an effort to make it urs, ur style. Someone ll combine it with vintage accessories, someone ll make ultra fashion look, another one ll simply put a flower in her hair. It is not about the doll, it is about you.

    20. It's not a big deal to me that every doll be different. If I see someone else's doll I don't want to copy it and offend the owner, but I might use it as an inspiration for a future doll of mine. If someone were to use my dolls in the same way or even get something similar/just like it, I think I'd take it as a compliment. Even if they look the same, they aren't going to be the same purely for the reason that the owners themselves are different. Whether it's intentional or not, some similarities will happen between some dolls, but that doesn't mean they aren't unique at all. :3 There are more and more doll folks popping up and it's just a thing. If you like your dolls and they're special to you, that's all that matters.
