1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How known is TOO known?

Jun 26, 2009

    1. So long as the companies don't start slacking off in quality control due to the sheer amount of orders, I wouldn't mind if it became a well-known hobby.

In fact, I would like it if it became a tiny more accepted by "outsiders", to the point having a BJD out in public didn't cause others to stare and gawk at it.

But I highly, highly doubt it'll be like with iPhones, where everyone and their mothers has one. For one, doll collection is a special hobby, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to appreciate their beauty. So there will be quite a few who won't be interested, even if they know what it's about. And others will still think BJD prices are insane, just like they do today. So you probably won't see becoming a "trend" anytime soon, just something the public outside of Asia will be more fmailiar with.

    2. I dunno, would be good for those of us who intend to stick around. Think of all the deals X3

    3. I really don't care what's popular so long as I like it (and I apply this to everything, not just dolls)

I do like that's it's more unique, and I don't want it to get popular, but I wouldn't be overly upset if it did become more popular...

I had my doll with my at the mall one time (along with a friend who had hers) and most people stared for a second then ignored us and one person commented on how pretty they were and wanted to get one for their self xD So I don't mind promoting, but I would like it to stay fairly unique and I really think it will.

    4. In my opion, based on what I know of the world so far I'd have many many people telling me "You're just doing it because (insert name here) does." It'd be nice to be able to sit with someone and have a conversation about them, compare faceups, and such, but it's nicer to have that with one or two close friends that you most likely introduced to the BJD world or they introduced you.
I've also noticed that the people here are all very nice and easy to get along with. It just seems like a trait most doll collectors have. If everyone knew about them, there'd be more of a chance of having mean people here.
I for one, am content with the amount of popularity they have now.

    5. I actually think it would be great if they became more popular.

When something becomes popular, more varities pop up, more price ranges pop up, and more things become readily accessible for the hobby.

If it gained popularity, we might get more *stores* outside of Asia. We might get more "lower priced" but still good quality dolls. We'd see a bigger selection of body types and sizes. And the faces and wigs too! don't forget clothes! Maybe we'd see something non-punk/goth in more online stores!

Yes, it would take away from the "uniqueness" of the hobby, but frankly the reason I got into the hobby was not to be different, it was because I liked the dolls. It wouldn't bother me one bit.

    6. Honestly? I wouldn't care. I'm into this because I like the dolls, not because I wanna have a "freaky" hobby.

    7. AGREED. This is exactly how I feel.:aheartbea

    8. Haha I'd be doing letter C...

I would be pretty happy if more people had them...like people have Riley dolls and stuff. I'd be able to meet more people who collect them as I rarely am able to attend meetups and stuff.

But there is "too known"...like if they became as popular as iPods and stuff...then I'd be unhappy but probably would still have them...just not be as public about it because I don't want to seem like a fangirl :(

    9. Heee! My bargain-hunting gene got all tingly just thinking about it ;)

Yep, I'm in it for the haul, at this point. I can't picture being without some of these guys. A smaller collection, maybe, but never dropping it entirely. It's about the dolls, not the trend.

    10. I scanned most the posts and it seems not many people considered what would happen to the bjd community should the dolls become popular.

But to start with, I doubt that these dolls would become so mainstream like hot topic and iphones. I can imagine that the public awareness of the hobby will go up, but because of the delicate, creative, and expenisive nature of the hobby I just don't see it being all too mainstream. If people carrying these dolls around were to be common, then I would hope to see the market expand. New or more quantity of bjd clothes and accessories would be great.

Now the actual question is the social aspect. You'd have people getting into the hobby that don't really bond with their dolls. Den of Angels would turn into another DeviantArt- n00bs running rampant with pictures of half-naked dolls asking for critiques on the flimsy backstories they came up with for their dolls. Everyone here would turn into catty-sounding elitists. When anything invites the masses, it just invites stupidity....

A little extreme sounding, I know, but it's an extreme hypothetical scenario. I wouldn't be less into the hobby whatever happens though, I've already fallen in love with my Laurie ^^ .

    11. A: good/bad for collectors
Maybe some would get restocked because of their poularity and the new market that would bring them more money. But real rare-things-collectors would probably have to find a way. New doll companies are growing like dandelion anyways.

B: make BJDs lose their uniqueness for being different
They'll always be different because of the way they're made, their possiblilies. I hope so, at least.

C: make you mutter "I was doing it before it was cool."
I don't care about that fact so much. Trends come and go anyways. When the trend is gone, they'll maybe call me back-timer. I will go on anyway.^^

      Laoky

    12. I cannot see BJDs becomeing a fad. For one thing that are fads are ususaully very cheap (Pokemon cards, swatches, pet rocks etc.) They also must be easy to obtain (Buying from a company whose first language, then waiting 4-8 weeks for the doll to arrive is not exactly easy to do).

    13. And it isn't already? Apparently you haven't poked around nearly enough...

Everyone I've ever had say to me "Wow, I'd like to get one of those!" has backed off with a clear "NEVER MIND!" after hearing the price tag, so I rather DOUBT that it will ever become mainstream.

BARGAINS!!!! *grabs Baakay and goes hunting*

    14. My personal feeling towards this is that I believe owning BJD's is a luxery and should not be something generalisered for everyone to have like Barbies.
If Bjd's reached the same "trend" level as those. It would mean they were mass produced, which would make processing mistakes MUCH MUCH more commen, since these are something made by hand.

I like it the way it is now, that it's a "small circle" of people enjoying it, while other remain indifferent or just curious. Of course I can't fight it if "revolution comes".

But it's not like I'd stop collecting. Not at all.

    15. It doesn't matter to me if it's an 'underground' doll or a well known doll.
If I like it - I like it.

I really don't like doll collectors who say things like - everyone has one. I don't appreciate other people forcing their views onto someone.

    16. I don't think these dolls will ever be able to get that popular.
They're too expensive for alot of people. And even if less expensive ones were made, there's still alot of people who would find them too creepy.
      It's just never gonna happen.

    17. I answer C: I was being uncool before being uncool was cool.

To be honest, it's my interest - I'm not going to stop liking them because they become popular. On the other hand, it would slightly reduce the joy I get from it; part of what I enjoy is the uniqueness, the difficulty of the hunt for the perfect items, the link to Japan and Asia. If that went away, I'd be a bit disheartened. Finally, I like it being part of a close community almost - I enjoy the doll meets, not too many people, just enough to be friends, a nice feel to it; too man people and that'd be totally lost.

    18. You think so? Hmm... Well, I know I haven't felt alienated by it at least then. xD you know, I think its because I got too used to the environment of gaiaonline (thank god I escaped that...)

But anyways, I think it would bother me more to see the hobby become common than for it to stay fairly underground. I like this hobby because its kind of like an escape from the rest of society.

    19. HA! I can just imagine every little scene kid in Camden Town carrying one, Makes me want to cry.

    20. I pretty much agree with this... as much as I would love to have a more mature opinion of "It doesn't bother me what other people do or say", I'll admit freely that I prefer my hobby to be unique and obscure. :sweat

Also, right now it's still special to connect with other BJD owners, because for most of us, it's like a 'super secret pinky swear we spend too much on this haha' type of thing. If it became mainstream because of a celebrity or something, maybe a lot of people would have them just because of that, and it'd be sad if the fad ends and all the dollies end up in a corner next to the mini-dog and the Furby.

For me, I think having a "smaller" community also makes it easier to appreciate other people's dolls. If there was a complete and utter oversaturation of the hobby, I would feel like it's easy to become jaded... but that's just my feelings.
