How many dolls is too many dolls?

Feb 6, 2014

    1. I've got 2 SD dolls and 2 floating heads at the moment and I feel 7 dolls will be my limit.
I've got plans for one of my heads to become a character, and have a few more complete dolls on my wishlist :3

    2. I am just starting the hobby, and although I am in love with nearly every sculpt I see, I do not have enough money to buy dolls unless it is resale, and even then I must be conscious of both my wallet, and the recasts people try to sell as legitimates. Right now I only have one, lonely, unpainted head. :...( I hope to get many more, but that all depends on timing. I suppose my limit for now would be three, with a tolerance of 2 floaters. It truly does depend on the person, especially since some have much more time, money, and space than others!

    3. I really wish for you that you will have your dreams come truth, and that your lonely head will get a body and a proper faceup, friend <3 May the Dollars be with you ;)

    4. Like others I am limited by space, but in particular, I draw the line when I am unable to really enjoy all of the dolls I have. I haven't reached that point in my BJD collecting as I only have one, so I'm not sure how many that will be for me :)

    5. Quite a few have stated both things but I think bills / space are the limitations. If I had a huge house and a whole separate dolly room then I wouldn't see a problem with filling it if my budget allowed that. For now I'll be at 15 by the end of the summer and I think that's about all I can handle space wise unless I buy tiny dolls (I prefer MSD though).

    6. I think I'm almost at my limit.

I've got plans for like one more body (currently on layaway) and one more full doll and that's about all I have space-wise and I feel like it takes me too long to get everyone reasonably dressed lately between sewing what I can and buying what I can't sew/craft with a larger crew.

Like one of my dolls has the clothes he came with plus a horrible shirt because I'm not yet used to sewing for his size and it's been like 6 months.

    7. how many dolls is too many...if it's more than you can afford at the time, more than you can store at the time or more than will bring you joy it is time to stop and reevaluate. So this answer will be different for everyone. And different during different times in your life.

    8. I haven't received my first doll yet, but I don't really have a set limit for myself. For me it really depends on how long I end up staying in the hobby and how motivated I am to buy new dolls. Their price is a big factor for me, so I'll probably end up owning fewer than I might like just for the sheer fact that I'll be pickier about which sulpts I do or don't want.

    9. I always feel like the number of dolls I have +1 would be too many.

I started out with two, and thought that was perfect. Then I added numbers 3 and 4, and told myself that 4 was perfect, and 5 would be too many. But then I added 5 and 6...you see where this is going.

I have 6 of them today (counting the one I have to pick up at the post office tomorrow, yay!) and a single floating head that needs a body, and I think that 8 is plenty. I managed to keep all of the other doll collections down to single digits, and I sincerely hope that I don't break that record!

    10. Anything over 4 dolls would be too much for me, I feel. Space and money are very limited on my end, so I have to choose dolls carefully.

    11. Depends on my money and space I have at home. For now, I only have one doll and I think owning more than 2 dolls is too much but I don't know until I have more money and space, maybe I would have a different answer. My personal limit of dolls is not set. I don't mind to have many many dolls as long as I enjoy the hobby.

    12. For me, the limit is my imagination. They are characters of stories I write for fun, for mself. They have they relations, their families, the grow up as I play with they characters... so as long as I can imagine a new character that suits my stories, I will have room for them (money is a different thing, but not in hurry).

Now I have 34 dolls (3 of them only heads) but there is not a problem for me. I can not play with all of them ever day, but this is not a problem for me. They are not alive, even if they are a part of myself, so I don't have problems if I can not pay attention to this one or this other for a while. Indeed, it is the same with human beings. I have a few friends that I can only meet with from time to time, but they are still my friends, they are there when I need them, I don't need to racke care and pay attention to all of them each dar or each week. So if people are not a problem, less problem are dolls for me.

    13. How many is too many? Tough question. I think you have to allow yourself to indulge in the things you love. I have all my dolls in one room. It's a lot. No resin bjds yet. I went through a period of buying every of a specific brand of doll I encountered. Now I have some I don't need. But I have some I got in the same time period that I love. I'm probably going to sell off the ones I don't love but I don't regret getting them. That tempered my love and proved to me that I don't need every doll I see. Now I'm very picky about those dolls.

So I say, yes, think about money, space etc. But also don't let the mundane stop you from getting the dolls you want. Even if it is occasionally an impulse buy. You learn what you like that way. And it helps you find what you love.

    14. I don't really get stressed out about the idea of not having enough time to dedicate to each doll, etc. Either the doll makes me happy when I see it/handle it, or it doesn't. If I get sick of looking at it and a change of wig/clothes/faceup won't help, then maybe I'd sell it (hasn't happened yet.)

Space is the primary limitation for me. I like to have mine out on display and not in boxes in a closet, and they're all big SDs. So I have to find/make places where they can be safe and where my dogs can't get them. I currently have 5 SDs, a Dear SD, and a Pipos Pang. I'm at the point where whatever my next doll is, I'll have to choose carefully and figure out where to put it. If I didn't have big dogs, I'm pretty sure I could fit 4-5x as many dolls. I suppose I could in theory keep some in the closet if I had to, and cycle dolls out like a museum or something, but not at the point of wanting to think about that yet.

    15. I believe that "too many dolls" is whichever point the dolls' owner feels overwhelmed and less enthusiastic about the hobby.

My own personal "too many dolls" has fluctuated over the years. Some years more than 1 doll was "too many". Right now, more than 4 dolls feels like "too many". I currently own 5 dolls, one of which is for sale to alleviate this "too many" feeling.
