How many dolls is too many dolls?

Feb 6, 2014

    1. This is how I feel.

I think each person has their own limit, and that limit is reached when it becomes a burden on the owner. I don't mean a physical burden (though it could be for some); I mean a mental burden in that you just can't deal with any more and possibly start to freak out over what you have.

For me, I've felt uncomfortable when I had over 8. I think the more larger dolls I have, the more burdened I feel when I accumulate more. Smaller ones don't affect me as much (but I only have 2 tinies out of the 7 I have now).

I want to be able to adequately clothe and style my dolls to my liking. If I have too many, then I feel like I can't do my "job" and get them all looking the way I want them to. :)

    2. I don't really have a limit. I think I'll have a lot not sure how many though but definitely a lot. When I run out of legit characters for them I suppose or the space to house them. I'm just starting out so I'm letting it progress naturally and wait to see when I hit that number of too many XD

    3. you shouldn't feel bad for having a different opinion than the Op. :) especially when its me, I love different views.

so let me try and understand: It's like you have subgroups between your styles of dolls. So kinda like multiple doll families in a sense...

that makes sense. I can totally see the logic in that. I think I may be a bit different since I only collect Msd's and mature tinies, so all my current and potential dolls go quite nicely together.

    4. The answer to this question is going to be different for every person. For some people two dolls might be too many, while others may find a collection of 75 to 100 dolls is quite reasonable.

I have around 25 dolls of varying sizes, and there are four on my wish list. I am currently seeking new homes for two (possibly 3). I think my collection will be more or less 'complete' after that. My maximum upper limit is 30.

    5. This. Absolutely this.

I have a large collection. A VERY large collection. (If you're really curious they're all listed on my profile-) But that's the thing... To me, they ARE very much a collection and not a "family" or a set of little resin BFF companions. My dolls are just toys, and I do think that makes a difference... I don't feel any real responsibility to love them all equally, like children, and I don't feel any guilt if I don't play with them all constantly.

That said, at this point my collection does feel pretty "complete" to me. I've learned over the years never to say never when it comes to getting new dolls, but I no longer have a wish-list, and I don't have any intentions of buying more. If the crew I have now are all I ever have, that's fine.

    6. For me I think 2 at a time would be sufficient. Mainly because I know I will barely have time for just one doll.

Since I am just entering this hobby, I will probably end up eating my words like so many others LOL XD

    7. I want to stop at say 25.. but somehow I don't think that's going to happen ^^;

    8. I don't believe there's any such thing as 'too many dolls'. I currently own 25 'dolls' (though most of them are floating heads - I only have 14 bodies shared amongst 27 heads!), and I have two more complete dolls and a head incoming at the moment as well. And that's not even touching my giant collection of fantasy parts :sweat

I manage the "doll overload" feeling by keeping my dolls stored away most of the time, and only bringing them out in small groups. Sometimes I'll have one doll out alone, or a couple (whether romantic or just friends), or a small group. This way, my collection is much more manageable and enjoyable!

    9. No real limit, but 20 at max, probably. Limited to one size for self-restraint and prop reasons, three male bodies and three female bodies. The rest would be floating heads switching bodies because I can't handle that many full dolls... also it is more expensive.

    10. The most I ever had for a long time was 4 and more often that that I usually had three dolls. Now I have three at home and three on the way! Six seems like a huge number to me though I do think I'll get used to it, however, because I only collect SDs it's hard to think of going over 6 because of how much room they take up. I'd like to think my limit will be around 6-8.

    11. I have 43 and sometimes I think that's more than enough, but other times I think there are still dolls out there I'd love to buy. I never expected to end up with so many, but I don't really regret what I have. Admittedly there are times I feel overwhelmed or pressed for space, but I generally get over it. I don't feel the need to pay attention to every single doll I own. I do have my favorites among them, but even then they mostly sit on their shelves and just look pretty. They're just dolls, after all. It won't hurt their feelings if I put them away and don't play with them for a few months at a time.

    12. It's totally personal.

And that personal can be a changeable number!

I originally wanted only ONE... and everyone knows how often THAT kind of thinking lasts! (A month, in my case.)

Then, TWO was the limit, then FIVE, then TEN... well, you can see how that went. I gave up after a while and for me, not having a limit was how it had to be. (OK, so I admit to having no will-power to begin with!)

That said... I DO feel like I have TOO MANY now. But I'm still buying. I can always down-size if it gets uncomfortable, I figure.

You know it's getting to be too many when new dolls come out and you are relived when you don't have to buy them. Or a friend sends you a doll for free and you think--"yay... crap!" I don't worry about the dolls' feelings, of course. But I do feel like I'm not appreciating them all as much as I would like. That's another "Hmmm! Too many?" moment!!!

    13. There's a user on Gaia that owns 59 dolls, have no idea what I'd do with that many dolls.

    14. There is someone in this hobby who owns over 160 dolls, and I personally knew a lady who owned over 100 (though she began to sell off a lot of her collection). Obviously, they made it work for them.

I can't imagine owning more than 20-30, but then again I tend to gravitate towards the big ones - little ones are cute, but I don't think I'd own more than a handful of them, most would be big, and... big ones take up a LOT of room. Especially because I obsessively keep everything - including the outer shipping box - that comes with the doll. Obv if I got to 20+ dolls there'd be some efficient storage organization going on.

And even then, that sort of also financially-dependent. I don't feel comfortable owning many dolls right now because I'm a student working two jobs to pay for bills and tuition and all that, and I just don't have that much disposable income. So to me it doesn't make any sense to own dolls that I rarely do anything with. So they go to fund school fees and textbooks and I only keep dolls I know I want to keep and do things with. Maybe in the future when I have a stable career and a better paying job, I'd feel okay with having $1000 display pieces that just sit there and look nice, that I rarely actively do anything with. Right now - to me, personally - that would feel a little wasteful. Though I would like to get to a point where it wouldn't feel that way. :)

    15. OMG…soooooo this ^ - it sums me up pretty spot on. Thank you April!

    16. I think once you can't afford them then you've got too many :P But I wouldn't set a specific limit.. Just make sure you can keep track of them I suppose.

    17. I've reached my limit with 7 big dolls and 1 puki puki. The only dolls I want now, are 2 more puki-pukis (for my dollhouse), but no more bigger dolls. When displaying them, they became more like a haze of plastic, instead of individual dolls. I didn't liked the way it looked, and so I've decided that there would be no more dolls for me.

      EDIT

I'm the same. For me they are sculptures and toys, not characters that I have a responsibility towards. What matters to me is if they still look good in my appartment. I don't like having a home with dolls everywhere: My dolls have to sit on top of a cabinet and that's the only place I've reserved for them. When there's no more space, it's time to stop collecting :).

    18. I like to have my dolls on display permanently, and I prefer big dolls, so money and space constrain me - But if you have no such constraints, then have as many as you like - they are not rationed!

    19. Well I have 48 dolls at home and 19 more on the way which makes a total of 67 dolls. Is that too many? I am sure for a lot of people that amount of dolls would be too much. But as long as I can remember all the dolls I own I don't have too many :)

    20. I'm a university student in Canada working two jobs too haha *cries forever* :')

And though I have one now, and plans for a sister, I'm pretty sure I'm going to stop at three. I have a family friend who collects rare and vintage Barbies. She's got over 150 of them and an entire room devoted to them. All four walls are mirrored and lined with shelves and its just endless dollies forever! It's a wonder her husband lets her do this, but then again, she doesn't say anything about his ridiculous porsche collection, so I guess they're even.

I regret not taking a photo of the entire room now!
