How many dolls is too many dolls?

Feb 6, 2014

    1. For me, my limit is two. One MSD size and one 1/6th size. The 1/6th is my ultimate grail, but to spend that amount of money on a doll, I agreed with my husband it would be my last. So my two will be very spoiled :)

    2. Ten is my absolute max, over seven and I begin feeling a little bit overwhelmed. Not because of feeling like I can't divide my attention--but because I begin thinking of my dolls as a sort of clutter, even if they're arranged neatly in an open area. Putting them in different areas eases this, but it'll be tough for me to go past eight.

    3. This is absolutely dependent on the individual collector and collecting style. Some feel overwhelmed at one or two, others are perfectly happy with hundreds (not even joking).

For me personally, I fall in the middle, but I do it by dividing my collection into "narrative groups," and each grouping is discreet and does not interact. That way my stories don't become too sprawling and I can maintain a handle on everything.

    4. This is a individual question, some people have 50 dolls and that's their limit and other might have limit to be 10. For Me personal it's to only have a limit of 5 dolls or under. I only have one doll by the moment but i have plans for two other dolls that i want to buy.:)

    5. I don't have a limit per se, but as a student my budget is limited, and therefore I tend to only have around 5. Atm though, I actually have 5 whole dolls, 3 or 4 floating heads, and two incoming full dollies. I will need to sell some, as I've lost interest in most of my 1/6 dolls ;^; poor things.
For me, If I don't really have characters and stories for my dolls, I just don't feel interested in owning a lot. So I can't imagine having more than 10 dolls, because I don't trust my brain to keep order in their characters and stuff X'D so I guess my memory sets the limit? Haha

    6. A tick over a year ago I had 25 full dolls and a floating head. Now? 29 dolls and 2 floating heads with definite plans for 3 more full dolls and quite possibly a body for one of the floating heads. I'm also trying to ignore the urge (and probably losing the battle) for another 2 dolls *head desk*. I've set limits at what I thought would be my max and I've passed that every time *sigh*. I've no idea any more what will be my max. I suppose when characters stop demanding to be shelled I'll be at my limit. Although, considering how many characters I have running around in my head, that might be a while in coming.

    7. To me the line is drawn at the point where I won't be able to provide enough attention to each doll individually.
I think my personal limit would be around what, 3-4? At least for now, I just barely started the hobby so it might change ;)

    8. I don't really have a limit set on dolls in general, but for different sizes I think 2-3 SDs, 5-7 MSDs and 10 YoSDs sounds about right as a limit at the moment? I don't even have my first YoSD home yet so those are pretty hypothetical limits, but thinking about having more than that doesn't quite feel right. I don't feel I'd be overwhelmed as I think I'll enjoy them largely as display pieces that I occasionally redress, but I wouldn't want so many that they started to blur into each other and started losing their personalities, if that makes any sense.

    9. My limit is pretty much "any more dolls than I have right now," meaning that I will need to sell dolls if I want any more. Mostly because we don't have space for any more lol.

Right now I have 7 SDs, and I'm probably going to be selling two of them.. I would say I can't have more than like, 8 SDs total because of space and money and attention issues.

I could maybe get one more MSD, but that's it.

    10. When I first decided to order one, I thought to myself that 5 would be my limit. But that quickly changed when I ordered 6... Now I think my limit is 10, and I'll try my best to keep myself from reaching that limit.
This patterns looks the same as the one I had with my figure collecting lol, I first thought my absolute limit would be 150 to 200. But now I'm at 225 and I'm still getting more. Though I am selling some to keep it at 200ish.

    11. Ahh limits. I find that they are quite fluid, depending on a person's situation XD

At first I told myself 2. And I ordered my first two together. And it was good. I was a student at the time with a very limited budget. But I do so love the dolls...
For the next few years I acquired them at a rate of about 1 - 1.5 a year.

Then I finished with school and got a good job and suddenly had lots more income. I went from 5 dolls to 18 in a matter of 2 years.
I was super excited to be able to buy just about any doll I wanted without worrying about it too much.

Now I'm selling, because I have too many! I've realized there are some I always go to to play with and others that mostly just sit there being pretty. Which for some people is ok, but for me I kind of feel like if I don't do anything with them they might as well go to someone who will. If all I do is admire them I can do that just as easily through a computer screen with other people's dolls XD
And I can use the money for spoiling the favourites or other non-hobby related things.

Ideally I'd love to have about 8 with an even split between SDs and MSDs. Currently though I think I can only get it down to 12 (6/6 split). But we'll see what the future brings!

    12. I started out wanting only a couple, tinies. One, a sculpt I fell for while searching for the other, the one who would shell my OC. I got curious about other sizes, so in all I now have 5 and one bodiless head (finally found the sculpt for my OC!) and am feeling an urge to sell one back into the market, most likely the slim mini. 5 might be my limit, or maybe the amount I have financially invested might be determining my limit. There are two or three more I'd like to collect, but they either aren't out yet or aren't within my reach, so I'll wait and see how antsy I feel once getting past 5 / owning more than one specimen of the same size.

    13. Is there such a thing? :D :doh

    14. When I started I thought my limit would be 1 or 2 dolls. Now I have 15! o.O And I am planning to buying 16th... =.= I have started to think I have no limit - exept if my money runs totally dry...

    15. My limits have to do w/money & space... I have a whole town of characters so if some incredible sculpt shows up that I fall in love w/I can always figure out who he/she is :D

    16. At the moment I have 1 MSD, a tiny (hujoo minpin so unsure if thats the right term) and an SD boy on the way~ I always thought I'd stop at 2 fairly sized resin dolls but I'm now doing some proper planning for an even bigger SD boy that has always had a place in my heart since I first got into the hobby XD (my mother will not be pleased). I don't plan to get any more than that but I can see myself letting the doll ban slide a little, only when I have a good enough income to do so obviously...

    17. I think I get overwhelmed when the total is over 9. I have 2 SD's, 1 incoming MSD, and 3 YoSD's ... I am considering selling one of the Yosds.

      Edited-
I also have a Hujoo Freyr, and an obitsu 11cm.

    18. To echo what most others have said, I think "too many" depends entirely on one's personal situation and space. As for myself, I have no idea. I have two MSDs and a tiny at the moment and one MSD and a tiny on the way. I'd never really thought to set a limit for myself, but with my limited space at home it'd probably be a good idea to set some limits, haha. Fortunately most of the dolls I like are tiny and I have no interest in large dolls. I am quite worried about all the things (clothes/shoes/eyes/wigs/props) I accumulate for them taking up room though!

    19. You can never have to many in my opinion. I have five now and my family tells me to slow down and stop but it's hard when you go to bjd collectasy to check if anything new has come out. :)

    20. With the narrative groupings, Miss Kiya, I think that's wise of you. >.> Particularly with that brain of yours filled with so many narratives. It gets to be chaos if you let story strains overlap. I remain empathetic in this regard. ^^;; If all my stories from Neverton were to cross, I'd have a mess.

I've recently focused more on Christopher/the boys from his youth at the military academy. It works for me.... and I'm thrilled as I have a cohesive goal that is no longer quite so random. ^^;; Though I'm presently at three still (When first posting, I had no plans of selling the one I did sell), with a fourth still potentially lingering... And Nero is in pieces up North (and further up North), but in perfectly capable hands. I'm rather happy. :)

It does seem to me that this is really a choose-your-own-adventure sort of answer. What suits you is what goes best. It does, however, as I stated weeks ago, freak me out when there's a room full of things that have the ability to stare at me, but that's because I've watched more than my fair share of horror movies. I'm trying to limit those now as even the air conditioner in my home has a way of traumatizing me in the middle of the night. *Sighs.* ...Which is why I made plans to watch one next Monday with a friend post-work. Makes sense, right? O.o
