How many dolls is too many dolls?

Feb 6, 2014

1. I think its really depends on the person c:

2. It seems to me,th favorite dolls don't have too many. The problem may be only where they are then stored .

3. For me, too many dolls is when part of your collection is being neglected and you don't do anything with them. I own 20 BJDs atm (cause I've sold some), most of them SD / 70cm and they take up a lot of space. I need to downsize even more cause I know I can't handle "too many" dolls and I'm waiting on another BIG guy!
I'm talking about ball jointed dolls, but I have a lot of other types of dolls/figures, fortunately they are not as big!

4. I have too many...This photo is less 6 SD dolls and I have 7 BID size dollies too. That does not include all the BJD cats and dogs I have added to the mix. I really need to thin the crowd but each time I pull one, it seems I have trouble getting it to the marketplace. :doh

5. for me as far as my room has a space i would love to adopt new dolls their is no limits to me i really love collecting them play with th never get bored and wish if they just were bigger v.V

6. i was start too thinking about how many dolls is too much after i saw my doll wish list going bigger an bigger, but after i read some of the comments, im more relax.
my girlfriend and i rpg a lot with our characters, it because of that we find each other and the dolls save our relationship :)
our rpg univers is so BIG! and it grows everytime we find a new doll we want.
i dont know how many dolls is too much but im glad too hear some people, how have a big collection is not tired of dolls :)
and i hope my love for my dolls never stop, and i will give love too every doll i get home :)

right now i own 7 dolls and it is just the beginning :P

7. I's definitely an issue of space for me. I tell myself until I get a bigger place, no more than 3.

8. I think 10 would be my limit. I'm mainly interested in SD's, maybe a few MSD's and I don't have too much space to display them. That aside, I doubt I could handle a bigger collection, making sure each doll is equally loved/taken care of:sweat

9. I didn't know there was this topic so I wrote about it in another one...
I think 5 dolls is my limit (plus a couple of very tinies maybe)
Don't know how it would be in future... but I can't imagine myself with a lot of dolls, for example, ten or more))

10. I'm new to the BJD hobby, but I'm pretty sure two will be my limit. I'm not planning on buying a second any time soon, though. I see myself being the type of collector who spoils my dolls and buys them several wigs/sets of eyes and tons of clothing, lol.

I have many other OT dolls of various types, but I'm more organized with my BJD wants.

11. I think 10 would be the limit for me... Even though I find it hard to stop buying new dolls whenever I see one I like, I think I wouldn't be able to appreciate them all if I had more than 10. I prefer having fewer dolls, but "completed" and a bit spoiled! :XD:

12. I've always said my absolute limit is 13, but I seriously don't think I'll end up with near that many. I currently have 5 SDs, one MSD floating head that I plan to get a body for, and one 30cm tiny and I honestly feel super ambivalent about adding any more dolls. There are three other SD dolls that I was planning to acquire before I called my collection complete, but I could easily see myself calling it done after only one more..... I pretty much have every doll that I REALLY want and wouldn't want to be without, except that one. I feel like the other two on the list could get cut and I'd be fine with it.
I love having the dolls that I have, I enjoy working on them and collecting new shoes for them and making them clothes and wigs and stuff. I have so much fun owning them and I would never want to sell any of them. They're awesome! But I really don't like the pressured feeling of having to save up for more dolls to complete my planned collection, it's almost like having a large bill to pay off and that's the opposite of fun. I am really getting to the point where I am happy with the dolls that I have and so ready to be done with the collecting process and just have fun with my dolls.
Plus I feel like I have PLENTY to do with the amount of dolls I already have---- if I added a bunch more nobody would ever get done! And honestly it is so much more fun to me to spend my hobby money on stuff FOR my dolls than it is to spend it on new dolls.

13. How many is too many?

14. I'd say when you get to the point you have so many you don't play with them all, that's too many.

Or do you mean how many in a year? in which case do you mean a calendar year? or in a given 12 month period? Because that makes a difference to the numbers.... Either way, my answer to that is, More than you can afford to pay for is too many

15. I agree! -- But hasnt stopped me yet (sigh)!

16. Well - but you don't HAVE to play with your dolls. Some people just like to collect them and look at them. I got mine sitting all around my room and I wouldn't sell a single one of them - still, I barely ever do anything with them. I'm not into photo stories (I don't like taking pics and I don't like comics, either, so that's probably why). And I'm not into writing elaborate backgrounds for my dolls. Some have them - but only because the character came first and I only bought the doll as a "3D image" of a certain character. Most don't.

How many is too many? When you're running out of space for more dolls! :) When you buy more than you should be buying - more than your income will allow you to buy without going into debt. When you look at your dolls and all you see is dollar signs (for me, always a sure sign it's time to sell a doll).

17. For me too many is when I become overwhelmed and can't pay attention to each and every one of them anymore. I've come to that point of saturation where most of my dolls are unfinished and I become frustrated because they're all just sitting there naked. There are too many, but I can't bear to part with them. So I'm now focusing on giving them looks and characters.

18. As the previous comments say - as long as you can manage them well, they all have something to wear etc... it's all under control ;) I admit, I like having several pairs of shoes/wigs and a box-filled-with-clothes per doll, so I'm not good with having anywhere above 4-5 dolls :3 If I had more time (no school etc) I guess I could even go to 6-7... So as you see it's personal and it just depends;)

totally agreeing with Wiske - if the number is overwhelming to the point that it frustrates you... it's time to either reduce it or at least stop to buy new. I think... ;)

19. Is it very bad that I'm not sure exactly how many I got last year? It's not because I got so many that I can't keep count ;) - it's because I don't keep track of their arrival dates. Once they are here, they are here. But I think I must have got three. Which is frightening because it means I must have bought a MASS in 2013 and 2012 :/.

Anyway: I popped in to say that it is really difficult - and I guess really personal - to determine how many is too many. I bought quite a few dolls in my first three years in the hobby, when I had more disposable income than I have now. Some of those dolls still don't have clothes (or they have clothes, but not their definitive ones), and those whom I have made clothes I should like to make new ones. Does that mean I have too many dolls? Well, not for me. I don't mind taking my time to sort them all out. I love them all and I don't regret buying them. I bought them when I could.

I guess the important indicators would be, for me: do I feel like I can handle one more, and do I have an idea what to do with it? Can I afford it at this time? Do I have space for it?

I bought a flat last year. Around the time I was going to move in, Souldoll launched a gorgeous limited edition doll with which I fell quite in love. But having just spent all my savings on the flat and discovering the world of mortgage payment, I felt I couldn't justify buying an $800 doll. So I didn't. If I had bought it, I expect it would have been 'one doll too many'. I would have felt really uncomfortable (and short of money :p), and that would have affected my feeling about the doll itself.

20. How many is "too many" is one of those impossible to answer questions, because it's apt to be different for every single one of us...

For me, it's become a simple matter of real estate. I'm sort-of a neat-freak and so I keep my collection confined to very specific spaces... A set of matching display cabinets. Given the size of my crew, I'm almost out of room in those cabinets already, and I don't have anywhere in the house to put another one. (I live in a row-house style townhouse with big windows that line up almost exactly east and west. There are very, very few places here that don't get direct sunlight at some point during the day. The cabinets that I already have take up pretty much the only spots that don't. o_O ) That means I'll cross the "too many"-line with the addition of only a few more dolls. I can make space for three or four more, possibly, but no more. After that, it's either sell off a few of the older ones that I don't tinker with anymore, or call myself done for good when it comes to new acquisitions.

But that's just the story for me and my crew... Other people may have more or less space, more or less time to devote to care and upkeep, a different amount of "fun money" to spend on their collections, or more or less stringent rules about which sculpts make the cut when it comes to new purchases. What's too many for me won't match what's too many for anyone else.

That said, I added five dolls to my crew last year... Seimei (Dollshe Hound), Ming (Volks Yori), Jade (Volks F-19), Artemis (Volks Shiro T) and Ceredyn (Volks Alain). This year will probably be about the same.
