How many people think of their Minis as adults instead of children?

May 30, 2013

    1. All of my dolls are adults, all of the time. Minis, the Yo-Sds, and the pukipukis (which are adult fairy-folk in my mind, given thier tiny size). The chubby faces and bodies I like because not all adults are slim, some are chubby. One of my Yo's happens to be a dwarf.

I have absolutly no desire to pose my dolls in sexual situtations or dress them in revealing clothing, so 'secondary sexual characteristics' aren't important to me.

Dolls are dolls, and BJDs are fun because they can be anything you want them to be. I don't understand people who can't grasp this concept and have to impose thier own strict view of what 'can' and 'can't' be on other collectors.

    2. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who does that. My Volks MSD is rather childlike, but her character is an adult. I didn't know if people thought that was weird or what.
I also don't think it's strange to have 1/6 and smaller dolls as adults either. A lot of us have elves and fairy dolls that small, and characters like that have no particular age.

    3. Chic-line dolls from Fairyland I see as adults... Likewise the Soom fairies and Donn's guy, Steve... But MiniFees, MSDs, Unoas and the like? No. Even the slim minis still look like older kids to me.

    4. I like all kinds of dolls and separate my dolls based on scale and their looks. I have a few child minis (very young faces, child bodies, and child-like proportions with slightly larger heads), and then I have some mature minis with more adult proportions (smaller head to body proportion than the child minis and mature bodies). They look very different to me and I display them in separate groups. Height seems irrelevant to me with very mature minis because they look like small adults. I don't think it matters, really. They're dolls and can be whatever you want them to be.

    5. Some MSDs look like adults on their own but I mainly collect SDs and when put next to a SD, the MSD is about the size of a 6 year old. I prefer MSDs who look like little kids so they will be in proportion.

    6. I have 2 Volks SD Cute boys & 1 Iplehouse JID boy, and although I don't have actual ages for them, they are definitely grown teenagers - not children. For one thing, these guys have way too much muscle to be plausibly pre-adolescent! :XD: SDCutes have impressive biceps and pecs, and JIDs are miniature mesomorph bodybuilders, complete with arm-veins.

Re Tinies, I do have one Yo-SD, who is also a random urban sprite who doesn't have an age - he looks more like a child, but he speaks in a kind of idiot-savant grownup voice (i.e. mine xD), and is kind of timeless that way.
There are also two Yo-sized DD-Anne Lotus Nears, but they are otherworldly imps, and definitely have no age. DD-Anne's sculpts definitely have a truly timeless young-old-eerie-fey thing going on!

    7. I have Minifees and I see them around the age of 17-21 since they also have mature bodies and my elf couple has a baby (Pukifee) as well. :D

    8. It totally depends on the maturity of the sculpt - there are certainly plenty of mature faces and mature bodies on 40-50cm dolls, so I certainly would have a hard time seeing them as small children.

That said, in proportion to a 65cm+ doll, they do tend to be the height of an 8 or 9 year old child in the relative sense, so I do find attempts at making realistic set-ups with mixes sizes to be rather complicated. But that's not exclusively about height, it's just as much about the relative proportions of the dolls as well (and certainly not an issue for dolls-as-dolls, or people who are presenting fantasy situations, obviously).

For example, I'd say that my 52cm souldoll vito Rouse and my ID51 London are pretty clearly designed to look significantly older than either of my SD13s, who are a good 10cm taller. Similarly, my 31cm Secretdoll Binu looks to be around the same age as my 46cm IS ZhuQing. So while I certainly don't think that size is the most important factor when deciding the "age" of a doll, I wouldn't photograph them all together as a group and expect them to look realistic in human terms (all's fair in doll terms, of course! ;)).

    9. I think it depends on the doll, some just look so much more mature than others.

    10. it depends on the sculpt of both the face and body, and also a bit on how you customize them. some adults can pass as much younger than they really are because they have a round face and are not very curvy OR muscular. but a child is a child and can't look otherwise. in other words: an immature sculpt could be made into an adult but a mature mini sculpt could not pass as a child, in my opinion.

    11. In our crew, the mini size resin is reserved for non-human minions to further distinguish them from the human characters. So there are two minis that are magician created assistants and one mini is a humanized creature from another dimension. So I guess they could be considered ageless.

    12. Absolutely; late teens or 20's, including the Tiny dolls I've owned. I'm simply not interested in dolls that resemble children so I seek out the ones that don't. However, it bothers me quite a bit that a female doll has to have absurd curves to be considered a distinct "adult" - so I have my own opinion of what is considered a "developed" body.

    13. Both of my minis are adults. My girl's character is 22 and my guy is 36. :)

    14. I have mostly minis and they are all teens/young adults. My BC Brava Bambi is the youngest at 14 while my Minifee Lishe and SoulDoll Might are on the older side at 19. The last two sculpts are more "mature looking" for msds. In my opinion anyway. Like most everyone has said it depends on the sculpt. The doll body can also be a factor too I would think.

    15. Agreed. I have worked with live female models who weren't curvy but it didn't make them any less womanly or beautiful. It would be the same for dolls. It is bothersome that because someone wants to have a female doll with small breasts, some people assume it is a child doll. It is stating the obvious but, women do come in all sizes :)

I have (2) minis'; a 43cm Limhwa Leda I consider to be about 21 years old and a 43cm Dream of Doll Airi which I consider her to be 19.

    16. For me, it depends on the sculpt - e.g., my Kid Delf Litchi, who is MSD sized and shaped like a child, I imagine her to be about 12 years old. But I also have an AoD MSD girl, who is really shaped more adult-like, and her character is 20. The MSD boys I'm sculpting will be adults as well.

So for me it depends on the sculpt of the body. I can see minis as either adults or children - it doesn't really matter to me.

    17. My AoD msd is 22, but well, her sculpt is rather adult-looking, and her boobs... can't find many of such big-sized kids irl, hehe.
I'm considering to get a Feeple65 body with elf Juri head now, her character will be 25-26 y.o, I guess.

    18. My FL MNF is 19, with a 2 year old PKF daughter. MSDs are definitely adults in my world :P

    19. I chose to have "MSD" 1/4 BJD's and intended for them to be adults.
I have an AOD 1/4 crew growing, and I don't have all the dolls I intend to just yet, but they are all going to be 1/4th sized.
Most of them are/will be Angel of Dream, but one doll (Jim) I was thinking of using a B & G (Boys and Girl) Sharon.
They are based off the anime Outlaw Star, seven years later, and will be a cosplaying group.
I chose "MSD" 1/4th sized dolls because I felt it would be easier for me to handle them, and find accessories for them.
After I have my 1/4 sided crew completed, their ages will range from 18-42 (or 18-32; haven't decided yet).

Here are their manga/anime ages VS my doll's ages (Add 7 years):
      Melfina - 18 VS 25
      Gene - 20 VS 27
      Harry - 19 VS 26
Ron - 35 VS 42 (May edit it to 25 VS 32 I didn't realize Ron was THAT much older!)
      Fred - 20 VS 27
      Aisha - 18 VS 25
      Suzuka - 21 VS 28
      Jim - 11 VS 18

    20. I don't think of any of my MSDs or SDCs as adults. That said, I don't see MSDs or SDCs as being the age that Volks assigns them either. My Human SDCs are all 15 or 16 year olds, and the MSDs are all 13 or 14 year olds. My Junior Ai boys are all 10 or 11 year olds. My Petite Ai girl is a 5 year old. These are the ages they look to me, and also the ages that they, (their characters) claim to be.

However, people come in all different shapes and sizes, children included. People also mature at different rates. I've seen some pretty buff looking 14 and 15 year olds, as well as 16 and 17 year olds who looked like they were still in grade school. You have girls who are pretty well developed by the time they reach fifth or sixth grade, and adult women who can pass for prepubescent girls. So when it comes to the age of a doll, regardless of size, I don't really think there are any hard and fast rules.

As for the ages of nonhuman MSD's, that's really a gray area! Pretty much anything goes.

My MSD demons, in terms of the actual passage of time as humans measure it, are eons old. This does not make them adults though. The youngest ones are probably the demon equivalent of 12 year olds. The older ones, probably 13 to 15 year olds.
However, demons age and mature much differently than humans, so it's rather like comparing apples with...say, elephants. ^_~
