How many people think of their Minis as adults instead of children?

May 30, 2013

    1. I kind of think of them in general as a young adult, unless the body is very clearly not... I guess I'm also more drawn to both the head and body looking older, though I like the lanky look some have when they are going for a childish body. My doll will be an adult, in my eyes. Well, young adult.... upper teen area? That may have a lot to do with my age though, and having the doll match near it. While children are cute, there are areas their designing is less versatile, probably because being ambiguous gives you more freedom to cover different ages.

    2. My minis are adults as they are the slim minis which tend to have a less childish face. Actually, they're all magical beings so I guess I should say they are timeless.

    3. The only thing that decides that for me is the face and the hands, the body sculpt plays no part at all.

Edit: I also don't really like the whole 'immature bust' thing. A small or flat chest doesn't always mean someone hasn't hit puberty, nor does not having hip curves

    4. I think it depends not just on the doll sculpts themselves, but also on what other sculpts they might be interacting with. My Soom Rosette dolls are separate from my other dolls, and I see them as young teenagers (13-14) easily. I eventually plan on buying some Little Gems, though. They'll be from the same story as my Super Gems, which means I see them much more like 8-10 year olds. This is because of the scale between the two doll sizes. If someone bought Little Gems, and owned no Super Gems, and said they saw their Little Gems as young teenagers (13-14), I could totally understand that. And if someone had Rosette girls with some other mature 50cm dolls, and decided their Rosette girls were older teenagers 17-19, I could accept that too. For me, BJDs have a lot of flexibility in what ages different sculpts can appear to be, and scale between dolls can be used to emphasise different ages.

    5. I originally wanted to have SD sized dolls. But due to weight of the dolls and travelling, and the body style of both sets of dolls, I really wanted to just have MSDs instead. I don't like childlike dolls, personally and the MSDs, even the mature ones, have a more rounded cuteness to them, which I think is adorable. I kind of don't relate to the SD sizes, I think. So for that reason, I see MSD as my mature lot.

Actually, I don't have chosen ages for my characters. They're kind of implied late teens/early 20's. But they're ageless because, well, they're dolls :)

    6. i have two minis i consider in the adult age range, and two who are children :) my adult minis are taller than my younger ones, but not by a whole lot

    7. A lot of very interesting opinions are here.
I totally agree that dolls are ageless and their sculpt are just shells for characters that their owner make.
I think their maturity depends on the owners, regardless of their sculpts. Owner can create them as their wish.
Even-though dolls look like completely young, if owner say they are adult, I think they are adult.
Of course from the point of other people’s view, there is the mismatch between appearance and age set- up . haha

For me, I would have personally preferred to have their ages set very higher, although they don’t’ have any vampire, fairy or alien characters. I like the concept that they are immortal because they are doll .

    8. All of my minis are at least in their teens. Well no that is not exactly true, one of them is a ghost who passed away before he was a teen. Two are faeries, and one is a dragon, therefore somewhat ageless. However the human ones are all either late teens or early to mid twenties. They are actually the same age as my one SD, and the SD I am in the process of buying.

I think the age of a doll is completely up to the owner as well as how they are painted and styled. My boys obviously look like they are at least in their teens by how they dress and wear their hair.

    9. Yep, pretty much the same here :) I prefer dolls around 42-45 cm. SD size for me is impractical and expensive, even though they can be very beautiful.

The only MSD I have that look rather young are elves. But they're not exactly human to begin with, and their bodies aren't childlike either. Or very realistic to begin with :) ...and then I'm not even considering the tiny dragon. No clue what age he's supposed to be, heh.

    10. My MSD's were adults when I had them, my YOSD was their daughter. The next character I have in mind though for MSD is a teenager. I think they are a decent size to work for either or really!

    11. Since I only have 1/4th dolls at the moment, I think of them as adults or older teens. There's nobody in larger scale with them, so there's really no reason for me not to. Plenty of 1/3 bodies are just as thin and juvenile as my 1/4 dolls'...

Even when I get my 1/3 dolls, I'll probably still think of them like this. I'll just consider my 1/3 dolls to be in a different scale.

    12. My bluefairy Denis is most definitely a child x3

    13. Well, it really depends on their look, company and what you compare it to, I would say. I mostly think of Dollzone's minis as teenagers or even only children, whereas Withdoll's minis are either teenagers or even adults in my understanding.
Personally I have DZ minis, that are supposed to be about 12 years old and an Iplehouse mini, that is supposed to be 15 years old and also looks considerably older.

    14. All my mini's are supposed to be adults, they are a seperate group from my SD group and just like my SD's, their ages vary but they are all adults. I don't have any mini's who are childlike in face and body sculpt, so that helps.

    15. It depends on the sculpt and company. All my Naraes and Iplehouse minis are late teen, young adults, and they are displayed separately from the larger dolls who I consider to be the same ages, but a larger scale. I do have several minis by Kaye Wiggs, who portray much younger children. I consider them to be about the same age as my Iplehouse Tinies, even though they are twice the size. The KW minis are actually taller than the more mature minis, but I keep them totally separate. I wouldn't be able to display all my dolls in one place anyway, so having distinctly separate groups that never intermingle works just fine.

    16. Depends. The child sculpts with immature bodies, like my Kid Delfs and Kaye Wiggs girl, are children. My minifee, however, are adults. Actually, given both of my minifee are elf sculpts, they're immortal faerie who have no set age. But since the bodies are clearly mature, so are the characters. Same goes with my Limhwa Sujan. Mature body, more mature age.

    17. I for sure see mine as adults. Just very cutesy adults... Haha. All my ocs are in their early 20's

    18. As others have said, it depends on the owner and the doll. I'm looking into MSDs specifically as a way of having smaller-scale adults, so the history of MSDs having been described as younger-and-shorter characters alongside SDs is pretty much irrelevant to me. (Irrelevant except that it means MSD sculpts seem more than usually confused about whether they're representing adolescents or adults, and anime big-eyes-small-mouth or realistic proportions.)

    19. i'm in the same boat as many here, my MSDs are adults. purely because i prefer their size over all and the characters they are,are adults. yo-sds are children and my pukifee's are ADULT fairies(this is the one most people seem upset by) and my puki's are child fairies.

    20. I consider my TINIES to be adults, not just my minis. None of the ones that I have, tinies or minis, actually have childlike proportions or childlike bodies. True, there are some tiny and mini bodies that are clearly childlike, but that is what is good about these dolls - they can be hybridised and customised ^^ I've made sure to make all of them as mature and adult like as I can.
All of my dolls, 11cm to 62cm, are adults :3
