Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. How much is too much for a BJD?

Jan 8, 2023

    1. My upper limit is $1000 with a long layaway, give or take a little bit. But, I have to be absolutely head over heels for the doll for me to even consider it; so far the only doll I've purchased in that price range is my Peaks Woods Red (which I still haven't paid off), and there's only one other doll I'd be willing to spend that much on, which is a Peaks Woods Hunky Dory in Urban Brown.

I tend to make my own clothing and wigs, and reuse eyes from old porcelain dolls, so I guess at least I'm not paying a lot for those? :sweat

    2. I collect mainly 1/6 and 1/12 dolls, but my limit is just about $500 USD. My favorite dolls almost always end up being limited run or rare color, so I don't mind paying more for a smaller doll- and since I don't have a lot of space anyways, I'd rather spend more money on less dolls I like more. I also only buy dolls blank. I love making as much as I can for my dolls, including faceup, eyes, and clothes. Wigs are the only thing that I'll always buy before making myself.

    3. I try to keep my largest dolls within the the $500-$700 range. A lot of the time I try to get my dolls on sale, or I buy store displays, or second hand. I don't mind a bit of colour change, or if I am going to have to clean the doll up, or restring it. It just gives me a project, and I saved a bit of money.

I really don't see myself going over $1,000. I think if it was a very rare doll, that I wanted for a long time, I might push that limit, but it would have to be an extreme exception.

    4. I mainly collect MSD (have just a couple yo-sds) and I can’t see myself paying over $900 USD for a doll after any conversion. And anything close to that number would have to be a layaway.

    5. Anything over $600 would have to be something incredibly special and unique tbh. Even at 500-600 I'm definitely thinking "Is there a less expensive alternative to this?" before laying down that much cash.

This may seem harsh but I can't even imagine a BJD that I would consider "worth" $1000 USD or more. Anything in that range falls in the "nice to look at, but I would never even want to own it" category. A doll being that expensive would actually (ironically?) diminish its value to me personally because I wouldn't feel comfortable handling it... and at that point I might as well just look at pictures.

    6. My hard limit is $800 for "normal" dolls and $1000 for any special or LE dolls. I see dolls like the Dollmore Lusions and Trinities and can't fathom spending over $2000, sometimes closer to $3000 on them, even if they're huge dolls. Just... how.

    7. I have 2 Mecha Angels (Sabik and Deneb) from SOOM that were almost $2k each. My least costly was my Dollshe classic Amanda that was on “sale” for $350 (supposedly reg. priced at $1500) I am absolutely DESPERATE to acquire a Dollmore Trinity, but at over $2500 (plus the cost of larger outfits, shoes, wigs, etc) I just cant bring myself to spending this much money- especially as I already have 11 bjd’s only 3 of which i keep out of their boxes….

    8. I shy away from dolls that are $1700 +, but I will consider it if it is something I really like thats limited (like the dollmore I bought for $2400) and if I have the money to do so.

I also don't have alot of dolls, and I find myself liking the more expensive ones. I don't like layaways, so I budget and save. I also take into account that the conversion rates are a bit crazy so I know i'll be spending alot more than what it says ( since it's always usd)

    9. I personally don't have a solid limit yet. Personally I definitely have to consider hard if it were $1000 or over, but for the right doll I'd probably go over, depending on how un/common they are.

    10. It depends on different company from 300USD to 1500 USD except for some limited.

    11. To be honest, I think that all BJDs are already too expensive. I wouldn't buy a doll for more than $700, wich is already a lot for me. This is my limit because my favourite doll is $680 and I fell in love with her as soon as I saw her (The Trinket Box Elf Meadow full set) so I'm trying to save up to get her. But she's the only doll I would pay that much for.

    12. The most I ever spent on a single doll was about $1.2k. Definitely don't have that kind of hobby money these days!! And I sold her at a big loss too... oh well, live and learn.

    13. I shamefully spent 1.7k on a 77.7cm doll, but honestly the sculpt fit the character i needed to make SO WELL, but i never should have, or probably would ever, spend that much money on a doll again, i think 600 these days is my top limit, but its hard to find everything you want in a big doll in that range >~<

    14. I feel like my limit's gonna keep shifting. Before picking my first doll I was really looking for a more affordable price (around 300), especially since we have insane custom fees plus shipping.
Then I ended up falling in love with a sclupt that was way over that and just bought it (540 I think). No regrets there and thanks to some sorcery involved, idk how but customs were waaaay less than I anticipated.
Atm I'm looking at a doll that'll probably be around 800-900s. It's too much for me. That's pretty much what I make in a month. However I really really want this doll, so might end up giving in... who am I kidding, I know I will. Although I couldn't justify spending more than that.

    15. The most expensive doll I've ever bought was an Angelheim limited edition, from a friend on a long layaway for about $850.

I'd like to say I'd never buy one more expensive; and in most cases, I doubt I'd go over $500 or so; but I know for the right doll, I'd sell a kidney or two.

    16. Personally I am capping myself between 1,200 and 1,500 USD as that is the maximum I am comfortable with spending. And even then it has to be one of my grails or is something super rare. I wouldn't drop that kind of money on a doll that hasn't sat on my wish list for years.

When it comes to general purchases I try and stay to $500-$600 max for a doll that I am interested that does not fall into the above category. And that is without shipping costs or fees. And even then it has to be special or have something unique about them to pique my interest.

    17. My max limit is 425 USD when it comes to either full doll or body-only (both for 60cm and above) and 125 USD for the head. This is what I normally set when going for hybrids and anything that goes above the limit....ouch! >.<

    18. It depends on the doll really… I don’t do fullsets and normally only buy blank so the most I’ve ever spent I think is around $1k… I don’t have any particular limit if it’s something that I really want… a few times some dolls I’ve wanted have actually turned out cheaper than expected!

    19. The most I've spent so far is a little under $1k but I think the maximum I would go is about $1500. I definitely spend more money wigs, eyes, accessories, outfits than I have on dolls. I think my favorite size is 1/4 but I do have a 1/3 and an uncle size doll.

    20. I only collect yosd and smaller so no more than $400. I have spent slightly more on a couple of full sets but I don’t normally go for them.
