How much modding is too much?

Apr 30, 2008

    1. i guess it depends what you do with it.
you could completely change the dolls face (jaw line, nose, eyes...) and it'll still look great. of course you wont be able to tell what mold it is, but maybe it would be the smexyest doll EVAH!
or you could do one little mod and it would screw everything up.
though i prefer when modding are done on common dolls. not rare dolls.
ex: if someone sand the nose of a breakaway. i'd be like WHUUUUUT??? (the nose is what i like the best about this doll! )

    2. I admit that there is one doll mould I have where I've seen someone roundear one and open his eyes...despite the fact that there is a wider-eyed roundear version of him available anyway ^^;

There are a lot of mods that I find rather tasteless, but I just don't look at those. I find some other mods enhance moulds (such as Shiwoo - there is something I dislike about the mould, but there was one I saw that had been modded, still recognisable as a Shiwoo but whatever I disliked about it was gone, so to me it was much improved), but others don't. All to personal taste.

    3. As I'm typing this, Milliput is curing on the elf ears I'm modding for my newly acquired <gasp> WS Hound. Giving him tasteful elf ears is what the concept I have in mind requires. Yes, he is rare and precious and I struggled to get him, moreover, he may lose his resale value, but I'd sell a kidney before I sell this doll, so it doesn't matter in the least. He is going to be a completely unique, one of a kind Hound, and to me it's the ultimate value.

On the other hand, I once saw an IM Hound with his signature frown sanded-off, making him a regular sculpt. That I honestly don't understand.

    4. I know this is kind of a wibbly wobbly subject..and really it is hard to say what you feel about it because it really depends on the situation BUT..

When someone buys a doll they have a particular image in mind of what they want to achieve with this doll. Whether that be slapping a pink dress and blonde wig on and calling her Elle Woods or completely tearing it apart and modding it into a horribly gorey toothy creature who only comes to see you in your most horrible nightmares.

I, personally, a-freaking-dore heavy modding. It is an amazing form of self expression and to see the things people can do is absolutely amazing. I love seeing heavy scarring or bones...stitches are a personal fav of mine.

I guess really the way I am I will just leave it bluntly as if you don't like heavy modding or you don't want to see a doll "mutilated" then just don't click the topic! Its just easy to ignore it and move on to the people who dont mod their dolls..

    5. isn't this personal preference ? as what you spend on your own stuff is your own business ?

    6. I have seen some amazing mods out there--from gore mods, to facial reconstructions, to fantasy mods, steampunk and so forth! Even the ones that I wouldn't want for my own brood I can definitely appreciate because they show how much work someone can put into their doll to achieve a vision. I think it's fantastic! Just looking at the customizing section and galleries shows how much creativity there is. Then again, I like the unusual.

    7. The only time I think it's too much when there are other heads out there that look more similar to the modded product, and I kinda wonder why they mod a limited sculpt when they could have had a much closer match that wasn't limited. Meh.

    8. It really depends on the skill of the artist instead of "how much" they've done to it.
Two artists could both be modding the same project, one of them could be very skillful at this type of work while the other artist hasn't done as much. Well, we all know which will most likely come out better.
it's never really the mold's fault either.... A little mod by that great artist on an ugly mold could look ten times better than somebody with no skill who decided to mod a bit on a mold that was beautiful to begin with. It just takes somebody with that imagination and talent to turn a beast into something outstanding and gorgeous.
I don't think you can measure how much somebody modded something that makes it bad or good, but you can definitely measure who is more talented at it to create that outlook in the end.
      ~if that makes sense u.u;

    9. Mmm... it really depends on the situation. Some doll owner LOVE to mod dolls to death even if it doesn't even look like the doll they orginally bought. Some doll owners may look at their doll after moding it and go "Oh crap..."

But it also depends if the doll was WELL modded or not, I have a high love for dolls that have been highly modded just to see the creativity people put in and effort to make their dolls like they invisioned it. Now if it was badly modded doll, but the owner was happy, then more power to him/her but if they don't like what they have done to it then... well they could always change it or maybe give it away to somone who loves it.

Some modding can be too much but like I said above, as long as it makes the person happy...

    10. EEEeeee You got him!!! I'm so excited for you! ^_^ What a great birthday present, if I remember correctly the auction was ending on your birthday right?

As for the modding, I feel that you do whatever you need to, in order to give life to the doll in your head. I'm modding a BBB at the moment, sure its a bit more inexpensive of a doll, but I've seen some really impressive mods on monthly and limited dolls. I think if you did it, its fabulous by default!

    11. On a general level obviously anyone can do whatever they want to their doll, rare/limited or otherwise. The important thing is that the owner is happy with it.

On a personal level it's not a case to me of the quantity of modding so much as the quality. You can do as many or as few mods as you like, but if they're not up to scratch then the doll won't look as good as far as I'm concerned. I'd far rather see a drastic but gorgeous mod on a Bermann than a half-hearted, amateurish mod on a regular release doll.

    12. I waffled back and forth for over 2 years over opening my BW Elf El vampire's eyes from the dreaming original. Not only was I scared about messing up, but he's a limited! Finally, I sat down with my dremel and very VERY slowly, I opened his eyes. I love the way he looks now (he's my icon). Then again, I have seen another Elf El dreaming mod where his eyes were opened and I almost want to cry over how bad I think it looks... However, his owner LOVES him, so it doesn't really matter what I think.

All I can really say is, limited or not, if you are happy with your mod, no matter how drastic or out there it might be, then it's great - it may not be everyone's cup of tea, so just don't expect to get a high return if you decide to sell them.
If you're just bored or want a change (on a limited), then please just sell the doll to someone who really really wants him or her and use the funds to buy a non-limited to play around with.

    13. I completely agree. If a doll is heavily modified yet still loved, isn't that better for both doll and doll owner? It is their doll, after all.

    14. For me, I feel people should do what they want with their dolls. But my new favorite sculpt is a breakaway, and I once saw a person Pay ( I cant believe they would pay for it) to have their head burned, and moded with paint, and epoxy, to make it look horribly disfigured to the point you could not tell it was a breakaway anymore, I just thought to my self, why not have gotten a really cheap dolls head and do that to it, you seriously could not tell it was a breakaway 05 anymore... it was such a waste. But to each their own. Then I have seen some one take a sculpt I did not like and mod it every where, lips, eyes. cheeks, chin, and make it look so beautiful. SO really to me if it dose not look like a thing ( human, neko, dragon, zombie, etc some sort of clear direction,) or badly done I feel modding the doll can ruin it.

AS for the minimee thing, I have done a few my self, 4 different orders in total, that I have since sold leaving me with only one left., I must say they are a hit or miss, you my think it looks great, ok it, and then when you get it home there is all sort of problems with the sculpt. I kept running into the problem I would ask for a side photo of the sculpt and they would absolutely not give it to me. SO I would ok it and then the nose was wayyyyy to big. I have also seen a go make the eyes smaller and smaller on their minimee go till the point when it was casted the sculpt looked like it as a sleeping eyed head. Again its a hit or miss.

    15. I'm personally a huge fan of well done mods.

But I definitely need to agree with; what's the point on modding the heck out of a limited one until you can't tell what it is?

But hey, it's their doll, they may choose to do what they wish with it. If they ruin it, it's their own money that they've waisted.

    16. I think modding is a good way to customize a doll to our liking in a more "serious" way then just face-up and clothing.

What I do think is too much would be completely changing everything. I see some people take a head and completely mod them to make something completely different out of them.
While some do a really good job at it, I do find it is weird to have bought that doll and change it so it is not even the same doll in the end....

But everyone as a different opinion and view on that kind of thing and really, in the end I do not mind. I just find it sad for the doll that got the makeover xD

    17. To each his own. If you paid for the doll, then you may do as you wish with it. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. However, I cannot help but wonder: Why did you buy the doll if, in the end, it may not have been what you really wanted? Then again, what do we all view as "extreme modding"? Everybody has different views, which is why, if you want to mod your doll to the extent of where some might consider it "extreme", go ahead, because it's your purchase, and your choice.

    18. I guess there's a point in time that you look at the head youve modded so much and you have to look at it's paperwork to figure out what mold it is. I guess to each their own but it makes it especially difficult to recognize a doll mode if everything has been modded. I can understand some reshaping... but why bother buying that particular mold if you plan to completely change the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears? eye openings and slight reshaping is one thing, but to completely alter it... it just seems a little excessive. Like, why not just find a better matching mold for what you're looking for?

    19. I personally don't have the guts to go ahead and mod my doll. I can change the eyes, wigs, faceup and what not. However, I personally find that if I have to mod a doll's face or body, then I shouldn't have bought the doll in the first place. Perhaps, if it were a cheap piece of a resin that had been abandon to me, I would mod it. That's just me, though!

    20. I think that if a person can mod well, then they can create some amazing looking dolls, and they should if they have the talent for it.

I have also seen some mods where the owner was, IMO, not as skilled as they thought, and I just look at it and feel so sad that they made something that is inherantly beautiful less so.
