How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. mine is pretty much sheltered from sunlight, i took him out to a meeting about 4 times in 3 years, other than that, he stays inside the box. i only take him out when i want to play with him. if only i know that he'll be nice and clean while being outside that'd be ok, but no, in my line of work (fashion and art in general) everything tends to be really really messy and dusty and i don't want to damage/dirty him ;_;

    2. I know I'll probably get some negative reactions from this...but I really don't make much attempt to keep them from the sun.

I don't leave them laying outside in the direct sun or anything, but I don't shield them either.

My doll room does get light in it. I have very sheer white curtains. I have never put a doll back in its box unless it is being mailed to go "visit" somebody or I'm selling it.

I feel that I have paid enough for my dolls that I should enjoy them. I LIKE holding them, cuddling, sleeping with them, playing, taking them out and about. I wouldn't want a BJD if I was constantly paranoid about a single sunray or a smudge of dirt. I want to walk in the room and see them, not have to dig out a box, put the wig and clothes on, look at them in the dark, then put them back up quickly. It wouldn't be worth the stress to me.

Besides, yellowing doesn't bother me. I actually think my WS AoD looks BETTER now that he's nice and creamy.

    3. I keep most of my dolls in their boxes for their own safety since I have both a cat and a kid who are inquisitive. The two dolls I'm currently playing with sit on a shaded shelf and the patio slider (my window) is curtained from floor to ceiling with barely translucent draperies. That said, I could accept a little yellowing on my lighter colored dolls. It will happen anyway. It's the stories of tan resin turning greenish that concern me more. I love my EID Kamau and I'd hate for him to appear as if he's perpetually nauseous and seasick.

    4. My doll is usually kept in her box in my closet, but this is mostly for pet-related and smoker-in-the-house reasons, not because I'm scared of her yellowing.
Usually the windows in my room(s) are covered by either a dark curtain or blinds, but light still does get in, of course. I don't stress about it, really. I never leave her out in direct sunlight for long, but most of the time there is plenty of indirect sunlight in the room where I play with her the most.
Like I said, I don't really stress about it. No matter what I do, eventually, she will yellow. So why should I be all paranoid about getting sunlight on her?
So I guess the real answer to the question is.. as much as she gets! :XD: She might get more sunlight when I decide to be brave and take her outdoors for photoshoots!

    5. My dolls are out and about, all over the house. Some are in well lit rooms and some are in less sunny rooms. And the location changes here and there. I take them out with me. I touch, play with, cuddle and snuggle. sleep with and in general am very hands-on with them. For myself, I see NO point in paying all this money for these dolls and leaving them in boxes and not interacting with them as frequently as possible. And I have two cats. They cuddle up to the dolls sometimes, but overall just sniff at them and leave them alone.

    6. My dolls don't get much sunlight these days at all (Seattle is good for dollies!). They dwell in the den, which does not have any windows; natural light does come through the doors from the living room, but it's not much. Having said that, I do take my dolls out for outdoor photo shoots and, in general, do not stress about yellowing at all. Of course, if I am unsure about the doll and may sell her, I keep her in the box until I decide if she stays or not; I wouldn't want her to get damaged or yellow prematurely, since I'd like to pass her on to the next owner in the best condition I can. Other than that, my dolls are all displayed on the shelves. :)

    7. I keep my dolls on display in a room with a window which has blinds, but I keep the blinds closed and cover the window with foam board to keep any sun from coming in and the curtains closed.

    8. All my dolls are in a windowed cupboard. They don't get direct sunsight, since the cupboard faces away from the windows. Those windows are facing east, so there is no direct sunlight in the afternoon. ^^

    9. I keep my dolls in a box whenever I'm not playing with them, but once they're out I don't stress that much about yellowing. I don't mind taking them outside for shooting or anything, I just try to keep them out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

    10. My dolls are in my bedroom on a bookshelf. I have black-out curtains that remain closed pretty much all of the time, and I turn the light off during the day. But I'm not against taking them outside when it is sunny to take pictures. I guess I just realize that yellowing is nearly inevitable if you really want to enjoy your dolls, and since they are so expensive, I'd rather I leave them out for everyone to see, and so I can just pick them up whenever I feel like it. I'll deal with yellowing when it happens!

    11. I've got some rare/expensive/limited/whatever dolls and I do not keep them in boxes. I will take them outside for photoshoots. I will take them to meetups. I like doing stuff with my dolls!

However--- I keep the shutters closed in the room they are in. I try not to expose them to long periods of direct sunlight and extreme heat.

Bright artificial lights can also be bad for long periods of time (that is, hours/days of intense light with no change of position or clothing). Flourescent lights, I've heard, can fade resin.

Just make sure your dolls aren't in one outfit in one position for days on end in direct sunlight or flourescent lights. Other than that, I think you'll be good. Resin will change over time whatever we do.... we should just take the time to do some basic care and that should be enough. I haven't ever had a problem with really nasty resin changes, even though I have some resins that are known to change easily (like French resin, certain colors of resin, etc.).

No need to freak out, just be sensible about it. It's like--I have all kinds of black clothes and wigs and I don't wash anything. I will keep them in dark clothes for long periods, but I know this is a risk if I leave them for a year or so. I will just deal with the stains. But I know I could be safer if I changed the clothes more often. But I don't sweat it that much. It's the same with light. I think about it, but I don't let it rule my life. I just try and not have my dolls in constant bright light if they don't need to be exposed to it.

    12. My dolls sit on my dresser next to my bed in the far corner of my room away from the windows, or lounge about in their boxes. My room is generally dark all the time and I've never taken any of them outside so I don't think any of them have ever gotten direct sunlight while with me.

    13. I've been collecting since about 2000, and although I keep my dolls in a very dark-shaded room, they still yellow. It's not terrible or anything, but that's just the nature of things. Older dolls yellow. Early pureskin and french resin yellows WAY more than regular resin or modern UV cut resins, but really all dolls are going to yellow. Most of the time I really don't notice until a new doll joins and is like... she's so pink! An interesting exception is that I've mostly gotten Soom dolls second-hand and figured that over the years they'd yellowed (being more of an ivory than a paper-white) but I /just/ got Clozel and her color is indistinguishable (I'm using Cuprit's hands for her, and there is literally no visible difference at all.)
So, my opinion is: don't stress. Enjoy your dolls. Realize there will be some yellowing. I do admit I tend to drape them with an opaque cover (anything from a heavy sheet to light blanket) when I am going to be gone for extended periods (like vacation) and keep heavy curtains on the windows. But I couldn't imagine not having my dears out where I can see them.

    14. I'm not really worried about yellowing, although I do take steps to keep my girl mostly out of sunlight. More out of habit than anything else, really. She hangs out with me and goes outside for photoshoots and sometimes when I go to hang out with friends I'll bring her along, but I put her back in her box or on a shelf that doesn't get any sun before bed, since I'll be too asleep to enjoy her anyway XD
Basically, I don't absolutely abhorr the idea of letting her get sun. I know she'll yellow either way. But she is whiteskin with a yellow undertone, so if I don't need to have her exposed to sunlight I usually keep her away from it. Not like that's very hard for me... my schedule lets me sleep until early afternoon, and I keep the shutters on my one window closed most of the time out of personal preference XD

    15. I don't generally tend to give a thought to yellowing. I've had some of mine for years (and I really love white skinned dolls) and it just occurred to me the other day that my first two had yellowed quite a lot. Whether or not that has to do with sun or just that they're like, 6 year old dolls, I don't know, and I don't really care. As much as I'm in this hobby for the amazing looking dolls, I also have this terrible habit of getting attached to inanimate objects so I just kinda "d'awwed" about it because it meant I'd had them for ages.

Tl;dr: A lot of my dolls sit near or on my desk, and my room is often bright with sun. I don't really care, because I don't see yellowing as damage. I guess if you have plans to resell your dolls or the yellowing bothers you, you might wanna put more effort and keep them locked away in a dark box or something. D: But... I'd miss mine.

    16. I'm unsure of how much sun my dolls are getting. They look OK, but I'm also not picking them up and handling them all the time. My shade is always down, and they aren't Venician, so there aren't any bars of light coming though. All they get is the glow created by the light hitting the shades; nothing direct.

I'm not sure if this is OK or not. I figure that because they're not in direct rays, that they're not in direct light... but I don't know if anything can penetrate through the shades.

I'm not worried about it, per se, but I'd still like to know if I was unintentionally contributing to speeding it up.

    17. I take my dolls out frequently and do not worry. I have very little yellowing even when my oldest doll will turn 7 years old soon. At worst its a creamy yellow and even. My bedroom is dark with a blind and one window and a door to the patio three stories up. I even keep them out of their boxes. I figure yellowing and colour change is inevitable so I do not worry about it much since it is a reaction to air and heat that affect the rosin more than Sun (and I do not keep them in the window or outside for too long.) Heck, I don't like the Sun much I burn in 5 min with or without suntan lotion so I sit under trees at meets LOL. So it works out.

    18. I don't ever keep my Blair in her box. She sits on my desk and while I'd never let her get direct sunlight on her, it's not like she sits in darkness either. I hope I'm not being too careless. >_< Every couple of days I feel guilty and stash her in my wardrobe (on a bright day, especially!), but I like having her around too much to keep her there!

    19. I don't usually bring the dolls that are least bonded with to outdoor @_@
But for those I really liked, they will be outdoor more often.
Yet they are not directly exposed to the sunlight,I'll still get some UV cut umbrellas and block those harmful rays that are shining at my boy :)

    20. I have my dolls out in my bedroom on a bookshelf. I have havy curtains that remain closed pretty much all of the time, but i spend alot of time in my room so the lamp light is mostly lit. I take them outside when it is sunny to take pictures, but dont let them sit in directly sun whitout some covering. Yellowing is a natural part that will happen eventually, I just help the process to go faster because I have them outside all the time. I'd rather leave them out to enjoy them.
