How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. I'm a bit twitchy about exposing my girl to the sunlight 'round here **shakes fist at ozone-hole above her head**, but I figure it will happen whether or not I preciously guard her from the light.
Thankfully though, the room she lives in at the moment is cool and dark during the day, whether or not the curtains are open. In contrast the room she'll be moving into when her house is finished is the warmest, sunniest room in the house *_*

    2. My dolls tend to not get much, if any, to be honest. But it's more that I'm paranoid about them getting messy or bugs over yellowing or discoloring, despite that being the main reason most people don't.

Regardless, I do like to take pictures by the window which is where they get some when I do--I feel it makes a nice back-drop.

    3. My dolls live in my closet right now, so they don't get any sun. I don't like that I can't see them every day, but they need to be out of the way when I'm not playing with them, so. :( Dean and Evra are the ones that tend to go with me to meetups, and Evra's green so I don't worry too much about him. But reading all these other entries, I'm scared to take them out now! ;A;

    4. absolutely none. My room has always the curtains closed, my dolls are not near the window and always in my room. I think that in the year they have been home they got like 5 hours of sunlight XD

    5. My Pipos charlotte get lots of sun! :U She hangs out in my room all the time, and sometimes if she's sitting in direct sunlight she'll be moved, but usually i don't worry much about it. I've never seen or heard of a pipos doll yellowing ( i may be wrong) so I'm not overly cautious with her :/ my new boy on the other hand doesn't get much light now a days because he's kind of secret? my dad doesn't know i bought him so he chills in his box a lot. but whenever i have the chance i take him out. i might become more cautious of leaving my doll in sunlight if i buy pipos' new tan doll ( a very likely possibility) since i know how easily tan can get wonky if it's left in the sun.

    6. Hmm? What is the definition of direct/indirect that people are using?
Since glass filters out certain but not all UV, and then most material unless blackout/stated only really provides a teeny amount of protection against UV - since visible light opaque does not equal UV opaque?

Um I tend to keep my dolls in their boxes when possible, though currently my Nyta isn't since her wig is a terror to take on or off! :sweatBut she is sat under my desk; which being under the one window in here is in near constant darkness

    7. I work nights and sleep during the day, so I've got black curtains over my closed blinds 24/7. Perfect for my dolls. Even so, they stay in their boxes all the time. I very rarely get to take them out to admire them. But when I do, I'll know they haven't yellowed ;p

    8. I don't let them get too much sun. I have black curtains and I sleep a lot lol. I only let my dolls go outside when I am taking photos when there is good lighting, or a doll meet. But a lot of doll meets are inside.

    9. I'm very paranoid about it! My dolls never go out in the sun, and even when being displayed they usually stay somewhere dark with the lights off unless I actively am looking at them. I know yellowing is inevitable, and I am ok with that, but I want to do my best to keep them in as good condition as possible. It's not a lot of trouble for me either, because I'm not the type of person who really wants to take the dolls out to "play" with them much. I just like to have and look at them.

    10. My boy barely sees any sunlight. Maybe any that might come through my windows but otherwise he only ever goes outside when traveling or doing photoshoots. He's forced to live the life of a 'hermit crab' and barely, if at all, leave the house. Like some people have said before though, mostly I don't let him in the sun or out of my room too much because of the fear that something irreversible may happen. Things like your friends cat for some reason trying to chew off your doll's fingers...thankfully nothing happened but it was still terrifying.

    11. My dolly lives in her diorama in my closet and only sees sun to and from cars. I don't know how old she is but I'm scared of yellowing. D:

    12. So far my only doll, a tan Mini Gem, spends most of her time zipped in her case since she's at home and I'm at school. I intend to avoid WS dolls because they yellow the most easily. I would feel safe with mine in the glass fronted cabinet I have if she looked better (has no face-up) and there was space. Lots of art and other dolls in that cabinet.

    13. No sunlight, ever, even when they are outside the closet :/// I don't take them outside at all. They are too important to me, and of course super expensive, so I worry about the condition of their resin.

    14. i don't let them be exposed to sunlight unless iam taking them out for a photo shoot or something of the sort. otherwise i always keep them where the sunlight cannot hit them :)

    15. I keep them in their boxes when I am not actively enjoying or handling them. All of my dolls are SD-sized, so it would be really difficult to display them all in my apartment. It is also really hard to have more than one out to photograph or enjoy because of their size. So typically if I am around the apartment I will take one out at a time to enjoy them, and put them away before taking out another. When they are out, I make sure the sunlight isn't actually hitting them. I allow them to be in a sunlit room, but the light that they are getting is always filtered. I have other faceplates that are left in the box all the time, and when compared to the doll I have out once and awhile there is no difference.

    16. I dunno, I don't take them outside very often (though I would like to!) so they're not usually exposed to the sun. When I'm not doing anything with them, they live in my closet, and when I move rooms in my house to get more space, I will be making a lot of them roomboxes with doors to protect them from the sun while I'm away. But when I do take them out, for display, or to play, or to a meet, I don't really care. Maybe I should, but I don't. It's like, I wore this shirt, and I'm not gonna change out of it just because I might get it dirty. I took this doll out, I'm not gonna put it back right away or hide in out of the light just because it might yellow, which will happen over time anyway.

    17. I personally do not keep my dolls by the window or in any sunlight for that matter. I'm super paranoid about yellowing though
Maybe try putting a shelf/case in the room which is away from the window, then you don't have to worry about closing the blind and your furry friends wont get them either!

    18. I live in the UK, in a ground floor apartment...I barely get enough sunlight myself, let alone the dolls...I want to look at them!

    19. I do take her outside, but the majority of the time she is in the shade, and she's not in direct sunlight a lot...I went to photoshoot and I brought her along. It was BRIGHT 80 degree outside at a park and out of the hours she was out in the sunlight for about 20 minutes

    20. I have never been brave enough to take any of my dolls outside, but I love natural light and have a few windows in my room that are always open. My dolls spend most of their time in their box so they don't get dusty(I hate that) but sometimes I leave them out during the day just so I can see them. I'm sure they get a bit of sunlight from my windows, but it is indirect. I would love to someday take them for outdoor photo shoots, but I would be careful to make it brief and avoid direct sunlight. Shady shots are prettier anyway in my opinion.
