How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. I'm kinda paranoid about it ^^; One of my girls stays in a doll trunk all the time in darkness- the other I let her sit on a seat sometimes, but usually half way through the day I will freak out and out her back into her pillowcase thing out of any light xD'' I think I need to find some UV cut MSC ... ^^ I love taking pictures of my girls on bright windowsills, but I always try and finish them asap so they get as little light as possible, them promptly returning them to dakrness. xD

    2. I think the more you worry about it, the more you're going to notice it.

    3. LOL Lemonheads! I don't take them outside for long periods around 10minutes at a time if I'm taking pictures in the garden. All dolls will yellow over time at different paces, it's unavoidable, none of mine have discolored yet and they are roughly a year old.
I plan to love mine just as much when their looks fade.

    4. I'm probably one of the few people not paranoid about yellowing ^^; My dolls get alot of sunlight because i like to take them outside for photos~ I like them to yellow a little, it makes them more unique though alot harder to get replacement parts for.

I suppose i'm just one of those people who prefer to play with their BJD's rather then lock them away :sweat

    5. I keep my dolls draped while I'm not home during the day... I'm not there to enjoy them anyway, so they may as well stay protected. I have both white & tan dolls that are sensitive to sun in different ways. My apartment faces north and only gets 2 sunbeams per day (it's a cave), but since dolls can even discolor in ambient light, it's worth a few seconds of trouble to drape them.

Besides, I live in a big city, on a busy street, and the general Airborne Grime gets everywhere. Even when the windows are closed, it settles in tiny drifts around the cracks in the old windows until I sweep it away. Don't want that to be settling into all the resin pores all day... can't do anything about it settling into my own pores, of course.

The tan dolls only get to go to indoor meetups, but they do sometimes have brief adventures outside or in a sunbeam. I worry a little more about the tan dolls fading than the white dolls yellowing, so they get the least exposure. Some of the white & NS dolls never/hardly-ever go anywhere, but that's because they have special faceups (Kaiya) or special body blushing (Lalyraa).

Most of my collection travels whenever and wherever they want, though. I like the lads to have adventures! Some yellowing is going to happen with or without me, but I do what I can to minimize it.

    6. I'm a little bit paranoid about yellowing, but I'm doing whatever I can to prevent it. I think that the msc uv cut will help a little, but the draping and trying to keep them in light controlled areas of your home probably helps a lot in the long run also.

I always tend to put my boy to 'bed' when I know I'm not going to be playing with him for a little while. I feel guilty about doing it, but until I find a better place where he won't be bombarded with sunlight and cat hair it's the best solution for me.

    7. So far I havent really been paranoid about it. I figure, I can't see in my future selling Sid (unless something bad happens heaven forbid) so what do I care if shes a little yellow. Shes supposed to be a colorful decora anyway. Once we start heading towards a banana though, then I might worry. She sits in a corner of my room that doesnt get sun ever, but I take her out often enough for photoshoots. -_-"

    8. I have a stunningly bright bedroom and learned the hard way about this (a French resin doll that yellowed profoundly). Even though I've moved the posse downstairs into a room I keep pretty dark, I still keep them covered when I'm not home. Thus far, besides the OG Lemonhead, Caro (the French Resin Souldoll Paris), my sweet little French resin Narae 43 has shown signs of yellowing, as has my beloved Volks Shizu boy. The Volks resin does seem to be yellowing more gracefully than the French resin, and the Shizu boy has gotten a lot of outside time--the price I pay for loving him and photographing the snot out of him, I guess.

Sunlight + resin is no laughing matter. Take care to protect dollies from unnecessary exposure to sunlight, I say, from sad experience.

    9. I heard this and honestly Rhiannon has been in the most amount of sunlight cause I like how the sunlight plays on her face. Now that would horrify some owners, but because her resin was naturally a little more yellow to begin with so I'm not exactly sure how much she's yellowed. I know next to Adam, she looks WAY yellow, but he's a natural pink resin from DZ. So the ones I'm getting now I'm more careful with, but Rhiannon I was not to begin with.

And like it been said, the more you worry about it, the more you're gonna notice it. Plus I know one lady in my local doll group keeps her dolls in the basement out of sunlight for the most part and they still yellow, some worse than others because that is what resin does.

    10. I don't worry about sunlight exposure at all with my dolls -- I'd have to keep them in a closet if I did, since I live in a studio apartment with a massive west-facing sliding glass door. I get blasted with sunlight on summer afternoons, but I generally close the blinds then just so it doesn't get absurdly hot. I know they'll yellow, but I think I'd have less fun if I fussed about it and always kept them put away, so I don't.

    11. I try to avoid sunlight, but a little isn't going to totally destroy your boy. If you're worried about his color fading, putting him back in his box when you're not playing with him would be best.

    12. My doll sits in a chair next to my comp.
      But my room has two windows, and both are on the same wall.One on the left and one on the right. In the middle of the windows is where my comp is, I'm not entirely sure shes getting any light there but I have these weird shades, I think they are called roman shades, they keep the light out well enough. xD;;

They used to sit on my book case, until I realized it gets direct sunlight at 6am!
Ever since I watched Rozen maiden i feel really bad shoving them in a bag or in a trunk!
      [I know, I know what a weirdo.]

    13. This is a really interesting thread and i am grateful to everyone for sharing their thoughts & experiences. I have a unique challenge 'cause I live north of the 60th parallel...almost 24 hours of daylight in the summer time (yikes! -winter is the opposite though). I've been a bit worried about yellowing, but I really like having my dolls out where I can just be with them and enjoy them.

    14. I've become quite paranoid about the whole sunlight issue as well.
You see, my room gets the most sunlight in my house. LOTS of direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon.
Not to mention that the big fat hole in the ozone layer is right above my head.

I decided to be more cautious with my dolls when I realised how the decorations in my room had changed colours within a couple of months!

I have my crew sitting in a book shelf with glass doors which I cover with A4 paper. I suspect that a fair amount of sunlight still gets through though...
I do take them out for photos and such, or having them on my desk or by the computer when I'm working/study :)

    15. I live in a Japanese style house with dark red cedar walls. It rains a lot and/or is cloudy here in Seattle most of the time anyhow. My dolls get very little light (and for that matter so do I). I don't bring them outside at all except for the occasional photoshoot but then only if it's overcast and in deep shade. Any more light than that is would make photos washed out anyhow... so yeah. We are like little pale grubs and never see the light of day. lol

    16. My boys inhabit the top shelf of my television stand in my closet. I usually keep the closet doors shut during the day, as I'm not home and don't need them open. However, when I get home and want to watch tv, I open them and there they are! I do take them outside a bit, but not for hours on end.

    17. I'm paranoid that they'll yellow. So I drape my dolls when I'm not around or put them on a shelf in the closet. My tanning Lishe will only come to a meet-up with me when I'm absolutely sure it's indoors and I rarely take her outdoors (happened only twice in two years).
Like idrisfynn said; all dolls will yellow overtime and I'm not willing to make it any faster then nessecary.

    18. Mine live in their boxes during the day and come out to play at night, (except for the occasional photoshoot). They're little nocturnal things, which suits me just fine as I prefer nighttime as well and it keeps me from worrying about sunlight.

    19. I didn't know indirect sunlight was bad too. Where I am, it's not exactly the sunniest, but my doll has been out sitting around my room with no shade or anything. But she has a "room" in my wardrobe which is very dark. I mostly don't close the doors to it, but she's pretty much blocked from the light as much as possible... this is the only sucky thing about resin >_<

    20. I think my doll get a lot of sunlight, indirect sunlight i mean. I live in very near the equator, so i get the sun everyday throughout the year. My room gets direct sunlight in the morning. Although im aware that my doll gets indirect sunlight almost everyday, i would try to place him at parts of my room where less indirect sunlight reaches, but not in his box.
