How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. I wonder... does anyone have pics of their 'yellowing' resin dolls? How do they 'yellow'?

I haven't even gotten my dolls yet *g* but plan on taking them on our summer vacation to Paris (if they both get here in time) and though I'm not going to take them out in the sun a lot, out apartment in Paris is an old studio (HUGE windows on one side)...

    2. my kids most likely get a lot of indirect sunlight, but i won't mind if they yellow a little, i'll just make it work with a new face up and clothes ;) though when ever i take them out they are always covered unless i am taking photo's. and even then i try to limit it to lessthen 15 min.

    3. Luken's sitting right here, on the back of my couch. Not in direct sunlight, I've made sure it doesn't reach the spot where he sits. But it's a bright room. I got no other room (one-room-flat) to put him and I'm definitely not gonna keep him stored away in his box under my bed! That's not what I bought him for. So I guess I'll just have to live with the yellowing ...

    4. Thank you very much to everyone who has replied, I've found everybody's experiences and advice really helpful. I think I will start putting him in his box or drawing my curtains while I'm at school, which will drastically reduce the amount of light he gets (I do need to get some curtains at my dad's first, but I have a black roller blind waiting to be put up once it's cut to size). I have a question, actually ~~ two ~~ the UV cut MSC, will it work the same as other MSC for other purposes (say, dollie nail-painting), and where might I buy it in the UK? I need to get some anyway for my boy's nails but have only found gloss UV-cut available within the UK.

Thank you again everyody, it's been so interesting and useful to read replies~~!

    5. Well, first the boys lived in the shadiest corner of my room with my blinds half shut (compromise - the plants had to live on something, not to mention myself...).

After a while I had enough of worrying about them yellowing so I managed to clean up two shelves in my wardrobe, set up a tiny living room for them and now they spend daytime behind thick wooden doors^^. I don't take them out too much and even then I try to avoid direct sunlight (I get better pictures in half shades, so it works out for the best for photos, too^^).

    6. I don't know about the UK....but I order MSC UV cut from Hobby Link Japan

    7. My bjds live in a large family room with 2 big windows, and one set of French doors. During the summer we keep the window coverings down to keep in an attempt to keep the house cooler. (Arizona!) During the cooler months everything is wide open with tons of light flooding the room.:o

I have made the decision to box or cover my bjds when I am at work during the day, or when I have no time for them. For instance, early this morning it was cool enough to open the windows, but my dolls were 5 feet from the opened French doors-- so I threw a cloth over them temporarily.

It is problem I wish I did not have to be concerned about, but I intend to enjoy my bjds as much as possible, and will accept that they age gracefully like I am doing!

    8. Usually I try to keep my windows shaded all day. In the winter it's not a big deal since I wake up before sunrise and come home after sunset so there's no point to move my blinds at all...but now that it's summer I like to open my blinds in the morning. Sometimes I remember to close them before I leave the house...sometimes I don't. Sometimes I move my dolls to a shadier part of my room and leave the blinds open...but sometimes they just stay where they usually sit, facing the windows.

And yes, my dolls have yellowed a little. But I don't mind, since I still think they're way too pale. As long as they don't start looking like citrus fruits, I'm okay with it. :) It really is a matter of what you're comfortable with.

    9. I`m like: OMG SUN! *hissing like a vampire* And I cover the windows, and pretty much make a living in the dark. I`m deadly afraid that one of my babies will get a yucky tan (yellowing) so I do my best protecting them.

    10. My bedroom gets ALL of the setting sun and given that fact that I have cats AND my mother smokes, I have no choice but to keep them in my room and in a high enough place to keep them away from little claws and teeth. So my kids get quite a bit of sunlight.

Oops? I have two tanned dolls and didn't even think of what it would do to the resin.

    11. I hadn't really worried about the sun exposure my dolls get as they get the least where I keep them...but I was wondering what the level of protection that sprays like the UV MSC offer for the resin of the dolls?

Does MSC UV work well at protecting the resin when the dolls are exposed to sunlight on a smaller scale (not outside but inside away from windows)? What is it's protection for full sunlight exposure?

    12. My room has no windows...so if she's in there I figure she's safe. I do take her outside fairly often, but I don't know how much sun she's getting all the time. I guess I'm not really that careful with her in regards to the sun...:sweat

    13. My dolls don't see the sun that much except when I am in the sun room for some pics, but that is all, my Roda that is French Resin has yellowed some due to the heat. The sun is not the only thing to worry about, it's the heat as well*_*

    14. I think I have a bed like yours (just the top bunk, and then the bottom is open space?) and I keep my dolls under there. It also faces a window, but I came up with hanging wallscrolls from my bed so it makes a curtain, and they keep out the light pretty well. :)

    15. n-no windows? @_@ That sounds a bit depressing.

I put my dolls in their boxes when I'm not around for long periods of time. But if I'm home they have a shelf that has curtains I can draw to protect them from the sun. But when actually playing with them I don't worry about it.

    16. I used to keep them all covered up, but the amount that Vin yellowed in the first few months of having him in my wardrobe just kind of threw me off the paranoia. They're BW, it's gonna happen. These days they sit on a shelf in front of a huuuuuuge window. They're no yellower since :\

    17. Right the heat and also just the air yellows them a bit. I think time yellows them but I think there seems to be a stop point an initial yellowing thats hardly noticable and then it slows down. I try not to think about it too much I have two shelf areas and both are away from the windows but there is light in the room (indirect also a beam of light hit them early in the morning and passes over them briefly, however in the summer the trees are full of leaves and we are surrounded so they protect my dolls and in the winter the light is milder. Lucky for me I have air conditioning so it turns on when it hits 75 or so. I don't take them out of the house very short photo session on the porch once in a blue moon.

    18. I'm paranoid, I admit it. I keep my bjd in his box during the day, being more of a night person I still spend a lot of time enjoying his company after the sun goes down

    19. Living in a cave does have it's benefits, though ;) I was recently told about an apartment for rent down the street from me that was more up to date and a little less money, and --I was told this as a selling point-- it has lots of light! The first thing that went through my head was, light?! Crap, my dolls! I would've needed some major heavy duty curtains or something. My current apartment works well for me, lol.

    20. Oliver has been under the sunlight for like five minutes since I have him, just to take him some pics, so he almost hasn't got any sunlight. Plus, he's always in my bedroom and it has no windows (but it has a big entrance with curtains, so it's not like I'm in jail or something xD) and it's always dark, so I have to turn on the light even during the day and in the summer is very fresh.
      I love my bedroom xD.
