How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. My dolls and I reside in an attic room that gets blistering hot in the summer.... perhaps I should move my dolls downstairs?? But this will be their second summer up there and I have not noticed any yellowing (my Sabik came to me quite the yellow fellow, but I don't mind). I keep them out of direct sunlight, but there is a bit of indirect light from the window. They look happier in the sunlight anyway :aheartbea

    2. try coating your doll with mr super clear with UV protection..It helps..

    3. My girl lives in her box unless she's having her photograph taken, I don't want her to be in too much sunlight!

    4. The sunlight on Jasper doesnt bother me. He's going to yellow no matter what...why not get it overwith?

    5. It really is, I went from a room with 3 large windows to one with none. :( I can't sit and draw or anything in my room now. Keeping dolls in their boxes seems to be a running theme here.

    6. true..we can try out best to slow down the yellowing process but we can't stop it..so we should enjoy our dolls and have fun instead of over worrying about the yellowing...

    7. I keep my blinds shut all the time. A lot of light still comes in though, but I don't worry about it.

    8. Yellowing is bound to happen unless you keep your dolls locked away somewhere :sweat
One of my boys I have had for a year now and he's seen a lot of sun, and many long photo shoots in brightly lit places.

I just don't mind it much I guess, I would rather enjoy them and take them out. *_* But the trick is coat them in some whitening toothpaste and let it sit on them for around ten minutes(Don't get it on their face ups) It really helps get rid of yellowing.

    9. Mine all stay around my computer on shelves that get bright indirect sunlight. They aren't near a window and since we are in Florida, our windows have tinting on them to filter the light and heat from the sun. I never thought about yellowing really and maybe some of mine have done so already, but it really doesn't bother me. I think they are okay and they look okay in pictures, but the lighting in the room is yellowish so it might throw off the color.

I figure I paid a lot of money for the BJDs I have and I am going to enjoy them. I want to see them every day, not have the sitting in a box. I've read yellowing occurs anyway regardless so why keep them sitting in a box where I can't enjoy them? I think it is great for someone if they do decide they want to keep their dolls boxed, but it isn't for me. I usually don't take my dolls out in the heat although my Choa arrived in the August heat (98F and up) and she was really hot from being on that UPS truck all day, lol!

    10. I do worry about them yellowing, but at the same time my bedroom is the safest place in the house for them to live other than the basement, and that room is sunny. I know I will have to deal with yellowing, but it's important to me to have them out where I can see them and appreciate them, and since I work from home, it doesn't make sense for me to lock them away where I can't see them.

    11. As others in the thread have said, yellowing will eventually happen with time. I have had my Latidoll blue Cara for over two years now, and have not noticed any yellowing in her yet [it's possible it's there though, but it's not very apparent] despite several photoshoots outside in her first year, and having her kept in a room reasonably well-lit by the window on a daily basis. I live in Colorado, so we have a lot of sunny days as well.
So in my experience, yellowing is a very time-consuming achievement, and it's not a huge concern fortuantely.

    12. My dolls don't get sunlight. They sit on a shelf away from the window and I haven't taken them outside.

    13. Right now, it varies by doll.

Gamrut, newest and whiteskin - I'm really paranoid about him getting sun, so he goes into his case to travel (thank goodness for Dollshe bags) and has been hit by a coat of MSC UV, at home he's either around the doll chair (good distance from only window, which is north facing, in the room) on in the doll bed (higher up than top of window, and shielded by bookshelf).

Christopher - I try not to get him too much sun, but don't fret if he gets some. Hasn't been in a case since he arrived, sleeps wherever there's a pile of clean laundry (poor guy).

Tanal - I was really careful about sun the first couple weeks I had him... then I went to my first meet and saw just how yellow he already is compared to all the other dolls. It was a brand new body but it started out yellower than any other doll I've seen yet. While he has the same two primary hangouts here at home as Gamrut (they are lovers after all) he's done a lot of travelling around in my arms, perched on my shoulder and buckled into the passenger seat in my truck, and I love posing him in the sun for photos so his hair shines. But given it takes 2-3 layers of pastel to yellow his head to match the body...

    14. I'm having a huge room switcharound and I ended up using Gwenllian's box as storage for my books, so now she gets more sunlight than she used to, but I haven't noticed any particular yellowing. Souldoll resin is creamy anyway.

As for Alaw, she's BW and I do worry about her yellowing, but I need to spend time with her more often and I can't do that unless she comes with me outside in the sunshine. I don't think I'd mind her getting a little yellow, unless she looked jaundiced or something.

    15. I live in Flodria and my dolls are always in the sunlight. But I'm always wash them. The only time there are not in the sun is when there are in my room.

    16. I opened my window today and let my girl sit and look out of it in her nightie :sweat i cringed every time i looked coz of the sunlight but it was just such a lovely day and i felt like she wanted to be part of it lol. As long as she yellows evenly i dont think it will bother me

    17. I keep my dolls in a cabinet with translucent doors that I covered with paper, unless I have a reason to pull one out. They will all yellow to some extent, but I like their current skin colors, so why hurry the process? Not everyone really cares, though.

I have heard of at least one doll yellowing terribly even though it was stored for months in a box with no sunlight. So there are freak accidents.

Coating the doll can help but the MSC and other sealants themselves yellow a bit (although the UV Cut I hear has been reformulated to improve that) so you have to scrub and re-coat your doll every so often.

    18. Seeing as how I live in a desert, I am a little paranoid about sunlight and heat on things in my apartment, but I guess I really don't have to be too worried about it. I've got resin statues that have graced my windowsills for years and have yet to yellow on me.

    19. Personally, I couldn't stand to not be able to walk past any pieces of art I own and enjoy them all the time in my home. I'll go as far as avoiding direct sunlight and high heat, I'll use UV sprays and my house has double-pane windows with UV protection, but I won't hide my dolls in a box any more than I'd keep a cloth over a painting or sculpture.

    20. I occasionally take my dolls outside for photos, but the rest of the time they reside in my room, where I keep the curtains drawn. :)
