How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. I was at first when I got him months back. But now it sort of slowly subsided, I just try not to expose him to too much light. Most of the time he'd be covered by a cloth so I guess its pretty fine thus far.

    2. Thanks everybody! My friend Mongoose and I have decided to cop together and buy some MSC UV cut and coat our boys. I need some MSC for his hands anyway and if I can UV cut his whole body, that's even better. Will it be safe to put another coat over his face-up and head, do you think? I know it's OT, but if anybody could just say yes or no, it'd be much appreciated.
Petitefilou - I know just what you mean, on a beautiful day, despite the vampiric "SUNLIGHT OH NOES!!" which comes to mind seeing him in so much sun, it just feels like he'd like to sit in the warmth for a little while. What you said is just like my own thinking, I thought I'd point it out!

    3. When I'm not customizing in some way, taking pics of my boys, or just carrying them around the house, at least one tends to be sitting by me, but apart from that, they stay safely tucked away in their boxes. I don't take them outside except for photoshoots and I don't leave them sitting out my room very often (and if I do, they'll be somewhere shady and away from a window.)

Honestly, I'm more scared dust getting all over them than sunlight making the resin yellow, so that's why I don't leave them out. xD

I suppose they'll naturally yellow a little over time, but it's not something which bothers me a great deal. In fact, some resin colours improve with age. :) (I'm hoping mine end up like that!) So I don't really worry about it at all. :)

    4. None! Mine lives in my bedroom. I'm too afraid to take him out.

    5. My boy doesn't get much sunlight at all, but he does get tons of lamp light... I'm not sure if that's just as bad for him. Does anyone know?

To keep him away from direct sunlight he stays in his *open* box, which has become his bed. I have two windows, and they don't usually get much strong sunlight at all. Plus they're typically covered by my blinds.

    6. Ehh.. my babehs don't truly get that much sunlight at all. They're mostly in my room and I usually have the blinds just barely opened (though a sheer black curtain covers those). Though if I was able to get out more (for besides work), I think they'd get a lot more sunlight! ^^ *dreaming*

    7. I've heard that Flourescent light is thought to maybe be bad for them, but that's all I know lamp-light wise. I read it on one of the FAQs here on DOA I think.

    8. Not much, I'm kinda avoiding the sun for some reason =_=

    9. i plan to keep them on a shelf out of direct sunlight and take them outside somtimes but not all the time.
i wouldnt be happy keeping them shut inside their boxes so ill risk them getting a little yellow. :)

    10. Too much probably. Hjalmar is third-hand and since I have no new dolls to compare him to I have no idea how much he has yellowed already compared to new resin. So I'm not too bothered about it. Pavi is WS but he gets regular scrub downs and I don't care so much about him yellowing a bit.

    11. I take mine out quite a bit, (when it isnt raining in the uk), i dont want to put them in boxes either when im not playing with them i want to see them all the time. They live in a glass cabinet in my living room. The lighting in there isnt too bad as its north facing and where the cabinet is, well thats the darkest part of the room so im not too worried. Lilith my E-an is coming up for a year old and doesnt have any signs of yellowing, i know this cos i was comparing her hands to the fist hands, (that have been wrapped and stored since i got her) and there is no difference.

I try to think of yellowing as dollie wrinkles, they will always look better than me as i age;) So why worry too much about it? I want to enjoy them.

    12. My dolls sit happily in my room where i admit sun happily enters for most of the day. I'm not a person to keep things in boxes and i wouldnt have the dolls if thats what i had to do. The only doll i really worry about with sunlight is my limwha(came to me second hand yellowed), but if i have the choice of yellowing out of box and no yellowing in box i would go for yellowing in a heart beat.

    13. I do a good bit of outdoor photography, but other than that my boys are usually downstairs so it doesn't even phase me. I'm not worried about it too much. I mean usually they are covered a good bit. If not. I can make them up.

    14. When my dorrie arrives, he will have a nice coffin lined with white velvet built for him. He's not a vampire, but it seemed more artsy and fun for me than just a box.

    15. Yellowing all depends on which resin and which doll you bought(tan or pale or colored) Too much of anything is bad no matter what it is. So i say definitely take precaution but don't go overboard.

I just got my boy so of course I'm at the stage where I'm super paranoid about every little thing. While walking outside his head burrows in my chest and i cover him best i can. In a room with sunlight or when not in use I simply place him in his pillow box and cover him-very simple.

It's a matter of how much effort you want to expend to protect them. Owning a BJD is a huge investment of money after all. As for the best idea for both sides...get protective uv coating and that should protect the little buggers a bit better.

    16. I have some 1978 12 inch storm troopers that have some pretty decent yellowing from being on a window (only on there back)

As far as my bjd goes I wont leave her in the sun, but she will not be in a box, I got way too many dolls that have sat in complete darkness in boxes for 10 years, sometimes I wonder if there just a figment of my imagination :doh

    17. Almost none ^__^ I usually keep my doll in a bookshelf, where he only receives slight indirect sunlight.

    18. I put my doll in her box for bedtime... but I take her out and let her sit on a bookshelf during the day. So, I guess she doesn't get much sunlight...

    19. When you talk about yellowing, just how yellow can they get? Scrambled egg yellow? Dandelion yellow? Homer Simpson yellow?!? I work from home and was hoping my doll could hang around on my desk while I work. I won't mind a little change in her skin tone, so long as she still looks human, and delicate. But if she starts looking like a cartoon character, I'm going to be upset!

    20. So far I only take Hansel out in the sun for photoshoots because he's white resin and I don't want him to yellow. What I need to do is get him some UV sealant. :/

But yeah, i generally keep indoors or in the shade when he's outside with me.
