How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. I don't keep my crew in their boxes, but I do try to limit the amount of light they get... the white resin ones in particular. No one gets left in direct light, and most of them stay in shaded areas or upstairs in a room with the shades down and curtains drawn.

Heat and oxidation I can't do anything about. But sunlight exposure, I figure, is the one thing that I can control... at least to a certain extent.

    2. My dolls get about as much sunlight as I do. Someplace between "none" and "a little".

    3. I'm never going to take mine outside, and my condo has heavy blinds + drapes so no sunlight gets in, and the only light is low lamp-light.

    4. I like to keep mine out, but the shades are usually always down. If they aren't then the dolls are covered up. I don't take them out in the sun often so they get very little direct sunlight.

    5. Well, I don't keep my doll hidden from sunlight! My room isn't exactly sunny but it's not super shady either. Plus, I LOVE how my boy looks in natural light <3 There's nothing like natural light for a great photoshoot in my opinion.

Though I do worry a bit about yellowing after reading this, because I'm unsure of how yellow exactly a doll can get. :/ I have seen yellowed dolls, and they don't look strange (in fact I find they look more natural, less pale) to me, but I don' know if that's the limit.

    6. I don't exactly plan on hiding my girl away from the sunlight, though she will be in a locked drawer sometimes (T.T -- I live in a dorm), so I suppose she won't get A LOT of sunlight perse, but I'd like to keep her around my desk while I'm working and whatnot. She also may get put in the window sill, because our windows sills are huge and pretty much just like shelves.

    7. Matti was my first resin kid - and he's seen his share of sunlight. I've noticed that he's a lot more yellow than my other dolls...but, my other dolls are all from different companies (Minus my shiwoo head...).
I know that he has yellowed quite a bit - but, I'm not really all that bothered by it. It kind of defines him as 'my first' and my favorite. *shh, don't tell the others!*

That being said, I haven't taken Renee outside yet...and I'm not sure if I will. She's so pretty - and I don't want her to yellow more than she has to! Emily, my BW tiny, I don't know about - she glows in regular light, I don't know if she'd ever photograph well in sunlight.

So - I'm aware that sunlight yellows resin, I've seen what it does...but...it doesn't really bother me. I'm still going to be taking pictures of my kids outside. Well, most of them. LOL>

    8. I'm About to get a whiteskin cherishdoll alley, and im worried about my little girl yellowing but i dont want to lock her away! any sugestions?

    9. I don't like to let Noami get sunlight. She sits away from windows, but I still let her out sometimes. I don't think a little sun would hurt anything.

    10. My crazy little guy LOVES the sun, and people watching. I feel terrible when I move him away from the window but I'm filled with dread that one day his face will become neon yellow while I'm gone for a little while. Fortunately for me, he's been a very resilient fellow, and I monitor him while at home and make certain he's in the shade (or on my bed) when I'm off to attend classes.

    11. My dolls are displayed indoor where there is absolutely no sunlight.

I do take them out in the morning like 8-9AM to do photo shoot occasionally. I love the colors of a photo taken outdoor under sunlight, so that is how much sun they get.

    12. Though my room is quite dark (due to the impenetrable shades of doom), there still is a faint bit of light that illuminates the space. Because of this, I am working on some black velvet drapes that will fit over the shelf that they will be sitting on. I find the idea of putting them in boxes everyday not to my liking, so perhaps this will be a bit more natural and fun for me.^^

EDIT: This thread scared me into keeping them in the large cabinet ottoman that I had purchased for them and their clothes. lol. They seem to like it, though I guess I will now use the velvet to line the box instead of making curtains xD

    13. It dawned to me today about sunlight in my room. o_o; I always thought my dolls were safe from sunlight...well they have always been getting indirect sunlight as I've seen it. But today, it was unusually bright in my room.

I always leave my blinds down until the sun moves away from my window but a flood of indirect sunlight comes in to light the room. Is this still ok?

I read through a few threads but most of them talked about direct sunlight. There were some responses about indirect but they weren't too clear to me. I, even, asked a friend about it but she couldn't give me a clear, definite answer to this because she keeps the room dark and only artificial light hits her dolls.

So what I want to know is, what is your definition of indirect sunlight and direct sunlight? For me these are my definitions:

Indirect: Sunlight that just lights up the room.
Direct: Obvious bright rays that are shining through the room and hot if the rays are shining in that spot for a long period of time.

I know direct is really bad for your dolls and can accelerate the yellowing process of your doll. I, for one, am not a person that would hide their dolls in the closet in their boxes. I like to keep them out and displayed. But, how bad is indirect sunlight for dolls?

I think that's all~ But if you have any other inputs besides the two-three questions I have asked, don't hesitate to put it in. :'D

      Btw, mods if this isn't in the right place, please move it to where it should belong. ^^;

    14. Any light hurts dolls to some extent, be it a lamp, indirect sunlight or full-on sunlight. Air in it's self hurts dolls too, it helps to cause the resin to yellow. No matter how carefully you keep your dolls they will yellow to an extent, even if they're kept in their boxes in a dark closet all day, the air can still get to them. There are alot of things to factor in too, such as what kind of resin they're made of, what color exactly they started out as (you'd be amazed how much pureskin can change in color between companies), etc.

Over all, I'm sure your dolls will be fine, but over time they will yellow some, that's a fact that can't be changed, everything ages. :sweat They're kind of like newspapers, you could put them in the rain and the sun and they'd look like they were 100 years old within two days (I did this as a class project once, in fact), or you could try and keep them in perfect condition forever, but still over time the paper will yellow, it will become fragile and break no matter how well it is cared for, even being kept in a glass display.

:EDIT: Heat damages dolls too. So it's best to keep them not too close to hot computers, stoves, out of hot cars and the like if you're trying to keep your doll from yellowing as much as possible. :EDIT:

    15. The most you avoid the sun, the better, but I don't think is necessary to stuck your dolls on a dark place. Perhaps the best choice is to keep them on the most shadowy place of the room.
I bought my doll two years ago, and I usually keep him on a shelf, where he's getting not very bright and very indirect sunlight during approximately 2-3 hours per day. The rest of the day he's more or less in shadow, meaning that, although the room is still lighted up by sunlight, it isn't directly coming through the window. It seems to be a safe environment, 'cos the doll has no signs of yellowing yet.
Hope I have been of any help. :)

    16. I try to keep my dolls away from direct sunlight in any case, but they get in contact with indirect (I still need some light in my room :p)
So I leave my blinds down as often as possible (the darker the better when I'm away)
The biggest problem is probably the heat during the summer. I have a room underneath the roof and during summer the sun always heats up my room terribly.
To make it clear, the water of my aquarium, which is normally about 24°Celcius, heats up to over 32° sometimes, which tells enough about the temerature in my room -_-
I put them in the hall then, where it is rather cool at those moments, which helps them a bit.

Nobody can keep their dolls as new forever, but I don't want a bananayellow doll either xD A little bit of yellowing isn't bad, but never too much

    17. I have a similar problem with heat (duh, I live in a desert) during the summer. When I'm home, the temperature's not much of an issue, but I always shut off the air conditioning if I'm going to be out for the day at work. My second floor can heat up to about 92F (33C) or more during the day with the A/C off. My dolls get moved to the closet under the stairs when I'm not actively playing with them or the A/C is off. The ground floor and the closet are probably the coolest places in the house during the summer.

    18. Thanks for your guys's input. :)

I just wanted to make sure because, I'm the same way with Wish. My blinds are always down in my room but the indirect sunlight floods my room! So my dolls and heads are rather exposed to indirect sunlight all the time. o.O I just got worried because of HOW bright it was in my room today. OTL''' The only places that are shadowy in my room are beneath my window, closet, and underneath my desk.

I know that you can't keep the dolls in prefect condition but I just wanted to know if indirect was ok. XD; As in it won't kill to have your doll in indirect than direct. :'3

    19. They are never kept in direct sunlight, especially not my dark skin guy. The normal skins I'm not to concerned about, the whiteskins...well, I protect them, but their actually so pale and Som white resin seems to turn a really nice creamy colour over time so I'v not gone to extream lengths on them.

I just don't want my gorgeous dark brown Kamau to change colour!

    20. Does anyone have a picture of really bad yellowing? Like yellow or green to the point that the dolls are lemon/lime colored?
