How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. I plan to never take my doll out of my house... So we can avoid as much sunlight as possible.
I saw many pictures of bjds yellowing, some remained beautiful, but others just scared me.
And because I'm really worried about that, if I can keep my doll out of the sun, then that's what I'll do.
No pictures at parks or outdoor places for her (even though some of my favorite doll pictures were taken outdoors). :shudder

    2. I once took my doll to a meet and it was making me so nervous because of the sun. I ended up moving him into his box and under my lap and I'm still slapping myself for even taking him out. Normally, I can safely keep my dolls around my bed and in my bookshelf, where they are nestled in their boxes. There is pretty much zero sunlight in my room except in one corner. I've got thick wooden blinds everywhere else...I am a creature of the dark...heh.

I'm pretty paranoid about sun exposure in general. I wont even allow myself to stand in direct sunlight, let alone my dolls. Besides my first meet, I only take him out on really overcast days. One time I kept some white books by my window and the part of the pages that were exposed to light turned dark yellow in under a month! Just goes to show you the effect the sun has on things. I would definitely be careful. DX

    3. When I'm not handing them my crew sits on a shelf on my bookcase. They're in the shade, but I also cover them with dark shirts to keep dust off and further prevent exposure to light (got the idea from someone on DOA, I can't remember who though...).
I tend to take them outside for photoshoots since natural light is so much better, seriously. They stay in the shade and I try to keep them out of direct sunlight, but honestly, minimal yellowing doesn't bother me all that much.

    4. I thankfully live in an appartment that gets no direct sunlight. So my dolls get very little to no sunlight exposure. I dont see the reason to cover them, or to put them away. I handle and play with them every day, so that keeps the dust off. I recently got a new dollmore doll, my first was a dollmore doll, so I did a compairison to see if he had yellowed at all. After three years of having him, never having him put away and sitting out, he hasnt yellowed at all.

    5. I'm not going to get overly paranoid about the yellowing issue. Not unless I purchased a doll and then I'm unsure of it and I think I might want to sell it off later on. Then that one will only get taken out of it's box after sundown. Other than that, I'm not too bothered. If it yellows and it yellows unevenly even, it's fine with me. It happens and it's part of the aging process. I won't love my doll any less for it. Besides there are ways to get around it such as repainting the face, blushing the body, etc. It's a small sum to pay for endless entertainment. I figure, why bother getting stressed about it? I certainly didn't get into this hobby to add more of that to my life. So my dolls get as much sunshine as they/I want. (;

    6. I would never keep my dolls in a box or run them away from the first ray of sun. I take my dolls to the park and to meets, I will take pictures of them in the sun. I don't have a problem letting them sit in a little bit of sun for a little while.

I take my girl to school with me most days, she doesn't always leave my bag however. I spent a lot of money on her so I'm going to enjoy her, and that includes taking her out in the sun sometimes.

    7. My girls tend not to get a lot of sunlight, not because I'm paranoid of them yellowing, just because I'm a crazy hermit who never leaves the apartment and prefer to keep my apartment looking like a cave.

    8. Question:
Isn't UV one of the key factor aside from heat being the reasons that resin yellow?
If so, overcast days tend to have stronger UV lights... then, wouldn't it be worse to take dolls out on a overcast day? <.<

    9. I try not to take my kids out into direct sunlight (although for meets and photography it's okay because it's sometimes necessary AND I get to finally see what they look like in the light) but our apartment gets strong light through the windows so I tend to drape a sheet of muslin over my kids when I'm not around or not looking at them. That way I can block out a lot of the rays hitting them without it being a nuisance.

The thing I really worry about, though, is how hot it gets when I'm at work...Luckily I have them set up right next to the air conditioning fan so they are the first to cool off.

    10. All of my dolls get a pretty large amount of sunshine, and *way* too much humidity. It's the fail of having a very small upstairs apartment that lacks in air conditioning but definately has no want of large windows.

However, despite that, on all four of them, there is very little damage. My WS is the only one it's even noticeable on without holding another of the same company that's new next to. And even then, it just makes her less harsh and more of a mellow ivry colour. And no face up damage luckily. I may be very lucky though.

    11. Mine stay on shelves in my dark room with a room darkening curtain across the front if I'm not in there (except the SD size one who gets covered by a T-shirt - white, to reflect away the light), but I also take them out for meetups and photos and such and don't worry a bit about it. I am careful they don't get too much unnecessary sunlight (if I'm not in the room, no reason to have them uncovered) but I'm not paranoid about it at all, I bought them to enjoy them and won't hide them away.

Unless a doll is french resin or one of the tans known to have issues, yellowing isn't really that big a deal. It's usually something you can't even see unless you're comparing the doll to another unless it's uneven. I do actually have a Delf head that's yellowed and a bit greenish (I knew he was when I bought him), and even for him it's not that big a deal. It kind of suits him, and in photos it rarely shows anyway.

    12. I have the curtains closed most of the time (my room gets wickedly hot if I don't) so my dolls are completely out of the sunlight unless I take them out. Usually if I want to go someplace to walk around and take pictures, I'll try to go on an overcast day.

A few minutes here and there probably won't do much harm, but 99% of the time, they're away from the light.

    13. Guh, just when I was becoming a little less paranoid of yellowing. :'D

The funny thing is, while this thread made some people paranoid, it made me resigned to the fact that my boy will yellow and there's not a whole lot I can do about that. I'm OK with it.

Neither me or him really get a lot of sunlight, he's usually in the shade, and it's not terribly hot. So the process should be reasonably slow. Hopefully.

    14. Hm.... sorry for bumping this up, but I have a question~

I'm planning on setting my first doll ina little while, but I'm wondering if it would be ok to keep it in my bedroom, since I have a balcony, one wall is almost entirely french windows.
There isn't much covering the windows either, just a really light curtain, and canvas blinds. (I somtimes put wall scrolls on them instead :3)

Would Keeping the blinds down block out enough light to avoid direct sunlight? Or should I buy curtains? >.>
Well, anyways, any tips are really helpful~

    15. My first boy came to me yellowed, so getting him out in sunlight isn't really an issue for me. Bory goes for rides in the car with me, he goes a lot of places. When the rest of my kids have been painted up and clothed, they'll probably face the same future. =) I couldn't leave them hidden away in their boxes forever.

    16. I am trying to keep my girl out of as much direct sunlight as possible - I typically keep the shades closed in the room she is in.

When she's not next to me she's in a glass cabinet. I'm planning to line that with cloth so as little light can get in as possible. I'm actually more worried about artificial light than sunlight. :sweat

We don't have air conditioning, so before summer comes around again I need to think of a plan. It gets insanely hot and humid here.

    17. I have a walk-in closet, so I just set my dolls on a shelf in there when I am not playing with them. I tend to keep the closet door open because it is more of an "extension" of my room and I go in there all the time. It is fairly dark in there, but I know they are still getting a share of UV rays. I don't really care, they are objects and everything ages. I'm certainly not going to set them in front of the window while I'm at work for twelve hours, but I'm not going to worry about taking them outside for photos every now and then.

    18. I only allow my, or anyone elses, doll to be in direct sunlight for photography reasons only and then only for a very short time, as i dont like the 'jaundiced' look some dolls get, and sunlight is very harmful to our babies, so no direct sunlight for ANY long periods of time. :)

    19. Sounds like we are talking about little dolly vampires - Beware of the sun!!

    20. I keep Sanyu on her own personal shelf in the closet. She has space, won't be bothered or knocked over by others, and is out of direct sunlight so she only gets sun when I take her outside for pictures. I don't know if you have a shelf in your closet to do something similar or not, but I find it works really well. And I don't have to put her in her carrying case or box every day. I can open my closet door and there she is!
