How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. Hmmmmm - I'm such a newbie - I didn't even know this was an issue. Fortunately my apartment gets almost no direct sunlight, so at this point I'm not worrying.

    2. Hmmm, by the looks of things a shelf out of the way of the window is my best bet. Which is a pain, as my bookshelf is already too full.
Buuut~ There is a set of drawers in my room that don't get used for storage. (I keep my clothes in 3 big boxes under my bed) And those drawers are broken anyways.
I might turn it into a little doll-sized bedroom in the space where the drawers should be, and put a curtain on it?

I dunno, I guess I'll just have to deal with it when the time comes.

    3. The only sunlight they get is indirect sunlight through a shaded window during a photoshoot. When I lived at home the dolls stayed in boxes until the sun went down. Now I live with smokers and the dolls are just in their boxes 99% of the time to keep them safe.

    4. I guess none whatsoever. My dolls are kept in their boxes and I usually take them out in the evenings. That's also when I have the time to indulge in any sort of hobby so it works! :D

    5. I never expose my doll to direct sunlight, but when the sky is cloudy and the light is dimmed down I don't mind to place her in front of the window.
Usually I prefer to keep her in the shadow, though.

    6. Mine sits on my dresser, so she gets a fair bit of sun and it does concern me. I've been trying to think of something that could go beside her so it blocks it a bit - like a screen - because it's really the only place she can go.

    7. It depends on the situation and the doll. If I feel like carrying one or it's in the front seat, then they get as much sun as there happens to be outside. I don't go terribly out of the way to avoid the sun; the one time I did I felt rediculous and like I looked a mite neurotic. :sweat When I'm not playing with them they're usually sitting around the living room. Recently they've been in the carrier because of the floor renovation.

    8. None, if I can help it. They stay in my room which has blackout curtains.

    9. Some of them get quite a bit, I don't mind color change. I don't stick them right in the window, although at Halloween my Notdoll girls do sit in an indoor window box. However they are the dolls that have changed the least on me color wise. Go figure.

    10. Some resins will change color, all do to some extent. Some people HATE this, I am of the camp that feels that changed dolls are more interesting sometimes, they can look "mellowed". I have one BW French Resin doll that is a pale green now, and I keep her dirty looking as well (it's blushed, it started out as just staining from her default costume) but that is her character.
Sunlight can exacerbate this process, therefore probably best to avoid sunbathing, especially for tan colors and French Resins. They also can develop "farmer's tans", just changing on the exposed areas. Like skin right?

    11. I'm not really concerned about yellowing. My dolls are kept in a closed cabinet when they aren't being played with, out of direct sunlight and out of artificial light. But I don't treat my dolls like holy objects - I take them out, take photos of them, carry them around. I bought them so I can enjoy them. And I can't enjoy something that I'm constantly worrying over.

    12. I guess I don't worry about yellowing whatsoever when it comes to my dolls- I'm honestly not sure what's so bad about it other than the apparent depreciation in price. But if you know you're not going to sell the doll any time soon (or ever) then I don't really think it matters that much since what I've seen of yellowing doesn't look bad at all. Thus, I leave my dolls wherever really, although most recently they've either been on the top shelf in my closet, or on my bookshelf which coincidentally never gets touched by sunlight since I have blinds and curtains on my window, and it's perpendicular to the window anyway.... lol, I guess my gang has no danger of sun damage anyway then, since they've only been outside for a shoot once. I did leave Maika nekkid on the window sill for like two weeks though when I was getting around to blushing him...

    13. Hehe, none at all! Save for the couple outside photoshoots, my girl is not regularly exposed to sunlight. It seems a lot of people allow their dolls to sit out during the day, but when I'm not using them for photos or sewing, they stay in the box... I'm really paranoid about staining and yellowing so I don't leave wigs and clothes on for very long nor do I leave them in the sun very much. I'm sure I'll loosen up, but for now I'm being careful.

    14. When I take mine out to mess with or photograph I don't mind if they sit in the light. Otherwise they sit on a shelf with a thick curtain.

It's the UV light you have to worry about, which can penetrate clouds. Not the sunlight itself.

    15. I don't really know much about what damage sunlight can do to dolls, keeping them out of it was just a habit from collecting other things that I used for dolls too. I keep my curtains shut all the time because my walls are lined with shelves of collectibles and I know how harsh the sun can be with fading things (especially where I live). Things that are more likely to fade or be damaged by sunlight also go on the wall that wouldn't get much of it if the curtains were open.

Soyeah, as a rule I generally try to keep anything out of the sunlight if possible. Taking them out for a photoshoot outside probably wouldn't do much/any harm, leaving them to bake in direct sunlight everyday would certainly not be good for them I imagine.

For humidity as someone mentioned a dehumidifier would certainly help. I've also heard that getting those silica gel packets and putting them on the shelf can help too? (you know, the ones that usually come with a new pair of shoes or any number of other things. You can buy them on ebay too) I'm planning to pop some of them around as we get very high humidity here too (we already have dehumidifiers elsewhere in the house).

    16. None, if I can help it! I know yellowing is inevitable, but at the same time I don't know exactly how fast they yellow... I still want to delay it as much as possible. >< But I still want to take them out for photos at least a few times!

    17. How long does it usually take for a doll to yellow?
I won't have mine out in direct sunlight often, I hope, because I have dark curtains in my room.
If it helps, she's an Iplehouse Tania.

    18. It's kinda hard for my dolls not to get sunlight unless I shove them in a hallway closet - the darkest places in my apt. However the Hallway isn't that bright with sunlight either.

I'm not too concerned about yellowing too much, really I'll carry them around with no worry if I feel the need to have them on me throughout the day. I kinda like the company. It gives them character at least.

My white skinned doll does have some noticeable yellowing, but it's not a bright yellow more getting the white to seem more of a very pale skin tone rather than the paper white he had been. I actually love the tone and it fits with my character much better than the paper white he had been. (Though I did love the white he had been, that he mellowed into something less striking was much more appealing.)

My normal skin dolls have no noticeable yellowing, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had a tad. Before I got them I was a tad paranoid, until I realized I bought them to enjoy and don't intend to resell at all so I should enjoy them how I like. And so I do, be it a sunny or cloudy day I take one out. Bought the only time I wouldn't consider bringing any is when it's raining/going to rain just because I've dyed Les' wig and though it shouldn't run in water I'm paranoid it would. xD yellowing is one thing.. brown staining that can be avoidable is another.. it had 'stained' him in the beginning when it was still fresh for a month or two and I kept on top of them erasing the stains with magic eraser but massive color loss I doubt I'd be able to wash away so easily.

Merpp... I went off topic a bit.. o.O

    19. I'm glade that my room does not get direct sun light. Unless i take them out to get photos i don't allow them to get any sun light at all.

    20. At my previous house my doll sat on a shelf that was adjacent to a window that got direct sunlight, so my doll stayed pretty shaded.
Now I live in a basement suit and she only gets direct sunlight in the early morning. Our windows are at ground level, and underneath a balcony, so they don't get much direct light after early morning.
My doll is about 4 years old, and I she hasn't yellowed in such a way that I can tell without having anything to compare it to.
      I've got another Fairyland doll on the way, so we'll see. ^^;
