How much sunlight do you allow your doll to get?

Feb 28, 2005

    1. When I'm not home my dolls are either in their boxes or on their shelf that is rather shaded - and my curtains are drawn. When I'm home I try to leave my curtains closed or have them in a more shaded spot unless I'm doing things with them. I will drag them all over the house with me though and take them outside in the sun for a few minutes here and there for photos. So I try to limit their sun but I'm not terrified of them getting some. I find most dolls seem to mellow quite nicely anyway. :)

    2. None- My dolls stay on my bed (or in their box when they aret aken apart as poor malish is right now) during the time im not home, otherwise theyre by my side in my dark, curtained room 8D

I should add I DO take them out in sunlight for photos, but that doesnt bother me for a couple reasons~ otherwise I wouldnt get the most beautiful photographs that I can and it would b eboring cuz theyd be inside photos all the time xD

    3. i have never thought about that before. My boy usually sitting on my bed. Im thinking too much sunlight is not good

    4. My first doll was exposed to a lot of sunlight. ^^; I was ill and couldn't play with her for over a year, so I left her out where I could always see her. Unfortunately, my room gets a lot of sun. :c She has yellowed a bit, but it's not that noticeable.

My newer dolls are always covered up when there is a lot of sun or hidden away in their boxes. On cloudy days, I bring them out of hiding and let them sit on a shelf in my room. I'm trying to be more careful with them.

    5. I do keep all of my dolls out in the open because that's the way I enjoy them the most. My place is very light and airy but I do try to keep them out of direct sunlight. Most of the exposure they get is indirect and some of them have yellowed a bit but that's just the way resin ages and I'm not about to shelve them all away and not enjoy seeing and looking at them just to avoid the inevitable yellowing.

    6. I keep my dolls in the open, out of their boxes. I don't stick them in direct sunlight, but I don't move them around the room to keep them in the shade or cover them up. I don't get a lot of light in my university dorm because the window is small and the artificial lighting is poor, so I probably don't need to cover them up anyway.

I'm not all that worried about my dolls yellowing (provided they don't turn bright yellow or green) since it's a normal process, and I enjoy my dolls better having them where I can see them. For me it would be a waste to keep them shut away just so they yellow slower.

    7. I keep my boys in my room. Its completely cut off from sunlight. I only take my dolls out for quick pictures or events. All in all, i would say so far, both boys have a total of 3 hours total sunlight exposure.

    8. None. I just personally don't believe they should be taken outside often. For one, the yellowing. But also, the world is not covered in carpet. If your doll falls during a photoshoot outside, game over. I have seen so many limited and expensive dolls damaged from falling outside.

    9. In my room, Tovi is almost always out of the sun. He sits on my bookshelf because that's the only place I can keep him, and it's next to the only window so sun never shines into it.

I love taking pictures of him outside, though, so he sorta gets a lot of direct sunlight then. I think it's ok as long as you don't leave them out in the sun all day or something. An hour or so for photos doesn't seem to hurt them. At least I haven't noticed any yellowing in my WS AOD Chi. Like a lot of other things, I think the need to keep them out of the sun is exaggerated a little. Just like how fragile they are tends to be exaggerated or how easily their face-ups get damaged. A lot of things seem to get grossly exaggerated in this hobby and make new doll owners paranoid to the point where they don't fully enjoy their dolls.

    10. My doll sits on top of a bookcase about five feet away from a window. I always have the blinds down since I don't like bright light, so he's never really in direct sunlight.

    11. My Dahlia spends a lot of the daytime covered in a pillowcase when I'm not playing with her, as to try to have some sun protection. My other resins line the top of my bookshelf, and are generally kept out of direct sunlight, though we do get some sun in the room in the afternoon/evening.

    12. I guess recently I'm not as thrashed as I used to be about direct sunlight. Yes, I suppose there's the yellow factor, but to be honest I have an old skin doll that's years old. She looks like porcelain. >-> It's quite gorgeous on her. I guess I could be fussed about it, but then thing is no matter what I what to get pleasure out of something I spent a great deal of money on. I don't get pleasure turning off the lights and only playing with them in darkness, and no I'm not saying anyone does that *but* what I am saying is that I'm not going to be worried about yellow.

    13. I keep my dolls in my office, where I've got those Eclipse curtains that keep out extreme heat/cold/light/sound/etc. I also have other collectibles in there, so I'm not really worried about damage, especially since the room is hardly ever lit.

    14. I keep my dolls out and posed where I can enjoy them. While they are not directly next to a window, they are in a room that gets light. I realize that they will yellow over time, but I'm fine with that. They are where I can enjoy them on a daily basis.

    15. I'm not sure if your question has been answered yet, but I have my dolls by my window as well. They are against the wall and never in direct sunlight, which I define as the sun actually shining on them.

When it comes to faceups the colors, depending on what was used to design the faceup and seal it, may warp if left in the direct sunlight for....weeks. Don't do that! But the suns rays will distort almost anything given the time you know?

A good faceup though, with uv cut msc, should not distort. The uv cut msc is like sunblock for your doll! Also even if regular msc is used properly the humidity should not affect it. If it does then whoever did your faceup is not very good at it. While I do not suggest this, really good faceups can with stand being submerged in water for short periods of time. I don't recommend it because it can cause the elastic in your doll to mold, gross!

Anyways I hope that was helpful!

    16. Rika is currently on display in the living room by the TV, where she gets a little bit of sun but not much. I haven't examined her closely enough to see if this has had any yellowing effect yet. Yumeko is currently in her box because she is a beautiful shade of tan that I want to preserve as long as I possibly can (though my husband keeps bugging me about needing to get a stand for her), so you could definitely say I keep her sun exposure to a minimum.

    17. I'm generally pretty good about keeping my dolls out of sunlight, though I think my first has yellowed a bit over the three years I've had him due to first doll-naivety. The big thing that messed him up was a vacation to Florida where I had him out of his box in the car and in brightly-lit rooms for a majority of the trip. Luckily for me, he yellowed pretty evenly and took on a nice ivory color. x:
My other dolls haven't had nearly as much sunlight and yet they still don't look perfect and pristine next to Hansel... So maybe Hansel's not as bad as he appears to be? o-o

Right now my dolls chill out on a dark shelf in my apartment so they're sheltered from the sun, even with the windows open. Before that, they were in my room in Florida where I had to move them to different points of the room throughout the day to keep them out of the sun... (Urgh.) and before that they were on a shelf away from the sun as well, so it's probably the eight months I spent living in Florida that were the worst for them.

    18. I like to keep my dolls out in the open and I like getting some amount of sunlight in my room, but I would never actually place them under direct sunlight. It's all indirect, and most of the yellowing they've undergone is from aging. If I had a tan doll though, that would be a different story, since green on tan is a much more noticeable color than yellow on pink/white..

    19. Most of my dolls sit on a shelf in my room and only get indirect light, but I have taken them outside for photoshoots in the sun. I have a white skinned doll that has yellowed a little but it doesn't look bad.
My tan doll I am much more careful with, she stays under her 'burqa' (what my roommate calls it), a dark cloth, unless I am playing with her. Green scares me way more than yellow:eek:

Does anyone know if indoor lighting will do damage like the sun? Does it make a difference if they are fluorescent/incandescent bulbs?

    20. Personally I try to keep my boy out of the sun just because I don't want any discoloring to occur.
