How Old is TOO Old?

Sep 12, 2012

    1. Old as you feel YUP! And really, isn't doing something like this 'what keeps us young at heart' ^^ I think so. It is sad when young adults go to further education of some kind (child care related usually) and 'relearning to play' is part of the classes. It is aslo one of the most enjoyable times of my life.

If you are to old to (in our case) 'play with dolls' ... you have become unable to 'have fun'. :)

@NeeP: That quoat is wonderful! I should find a digital copy of the Narnia books now that I can read again... I only read a couple of them. Oh and you bum for not mentioning you b-day in the club >:p ... Make sure you make time for April 20 (think thats the date for next meet).

@Raven Winterhawke: that is so cool. do you think you will ever go again (to a Japan event?). I'd go with...

we should make and old farts travel holiday ... god we would look awsome lol.

    2. I'm pretty positive the only age that's too old for dolls is dead.

    3. I think a better question would be "How young is TOO Young?" Teens and adults can play safely with resin dolls, but teething on resin is definitely a BAD idea!

      ... also, there's something a bit offensive/ageist about this question! :(

    4. Wasn't me who went! I just used someone's quote:lol:

    5. Well I think externally the society has inserted all those "to do" and "not to do" to people, I think in many cases individuals would also want to conform to such main stream thoughts of what is appropriate for you to do. It was like the concept of dolls which is a girl's toy and racing car which is a boy's toy. And toys are just for kids...bla bla bla

But in fact the world is fact very diverse, and everyone has their own pursues, and now I learn to live more freely. We are constantly being judged by different people in some way, but you can never satisfied them all!! I am 25 now (am I counted as an older collector?) and I know that BJDs and my doll collecting is a hobby that will continue for years for me:)

    6.

Trust me, you're never too old to play with dolls! I'm the oldest in my group here in Ohio, USA, and as the saying goes, "No one cares how old you are, its all about the dolls!"

So go to meetups, meet new friends, learn and teach about BJDs and have a blast!

After all, you're never to old to have a second/third/10th childhood! :3nodding: ;)

And no lilky_milky, 25 is not one of "the older collectors." I also belong to a BJD forum that you have to be 30+ to join! >:P

    7. I think about this a lot. I turn twenty-nine in a couple of months and I still love my dolls, both my BJDs and the ones I make. I still carry them around outside, although I've started to feel more self-conscious about that. Of course I do not think there is an age at which one must put things that one loves away. I find it rather sad that growing up can be seen as a metaphor for giving up one's passions. Adulthood is not a time to start conforming.

Also, I have seen many people react to dolls by saying they love them, but they don't have a child to give them to. But clearly, they want the doll for themselves and lack the courage to purchase it just for them. I wish more people could defy expectations and please themselves, whatever age they are.

    8. Collecting dolls is no more 'childish' than collecting model trains or transformers or pinned butterflies. Some societies have negative stereotypes associated with 'female' hobbies (usually fuelled mostly by sexism) - where a man can spend thousands of dollars assembling a collection of vintage arcade games and have that be 'just' a hobby, a woman who spends the same amount assembling a collection of vintage dolls or bears or what-have-you will be chastised and told to stop 'wasting' her money.

I think it's rubbish, and that more people need to learn to politely mind their own business when it comes to what makes other people happy.

    9. Thank you Ryuichi Sakuma 13:)for that boost of confidence!

I totally agree with you Cayora. I was one of those people that would see a doll I wish I could buy, but I had no one to buy it for. Now I realize I did have someone to buy it for....ME!

I remember when I had my first child. I was so excited that I could buy crayons and would be "allowed" to color again. I got to go into the toys stores, watch cartoons and play again. I don't know what ever made me think I wasn't allowed to do all those things as an adult in the 1st place. Though I am sure it did have something to do with my trying to prove to society that I was an adult when I was a teen. These are things adults are not publicly seen doing without children present.

    10. No age is too old xD

    11. Hmmm, I' m almost 40 with one child and another one on the way ( no, I'm not an actress , this one just came late ;) ) and I didn' t start out in this hobby till 3 years ago. I've had people look at me askance when they learn that I collect dolls, figures, read manga or watch anime. Since I have a kid, they couldn't even say I'm compensating for the lack of a child, they just think I'm wierd that way. I used to care but then I realised, why should I? It's my life, my my money and its not hurting anybody, gives me great joy and greatly reduces stress, why should I let people tell me I'm too old to play with dolls? I plan on doing so for as long as I could, well, maybe at least while I can still carry one without falling over and breaking a hip, in which case, they'd be sitting on a special place in my walker and we'll be merrily zipping along till the day I pass on. So, yeah, no age is too old for the things that bring you joy.

    12. My standard answer to people like that is an Archie Bunker :P complete with sound effects....

    13. Age has nothing to do with it - we enjoy our dolls in our own way and can share them with one another. It's all positive.

    14. Well said... the 'sexism' never even occured to me... I HAD wondered why men who turn a basement into a mini landscape just for trains (and they usually don't let others 'much less a child' near it. HOWEVER, I do think we as members of this comunity should try to inform ppl of the uniqueness of this hobby and it's merits... The more informed we make others the less there are to look oddly upon us ^^. PROMOTE your hobby with pride!

    15. @April LOL about teething on resin but so true of there being no upper age limit really.

The question of the age is just as stark a contrast between those in the hobby vs not as even sometimes within the hobby, you're male? Not a teen, not twenties either but yes, male and yes even more than one with intent to at least complete three more (floating heads as of this point in time) and perhaps more thereafter. Creativity and imagination see no boundaries be they age or other. It's something I enjoy and though true I deal with others' ignorance at times when they find out that I have them, to each their own... in a way, especially when they question cost, I simply turn and ask then why they spend so much on video games (at all ages) because then at least my expenses yield something tangible in the end vs a bunch of bits and bytes viewed on a screen for moments then gone forever. No age limit in my eyes.

    16. I'm 16 and I get people telling me that either BJDs are creepy/evil or that I am too old to playing with them. At 16. I don't even bother explaining this hobby to them. I feel you are never to old for something you love. (okay, obviously there are some things we grow out of for a reason...) but in general. It shouldn't matter how old you are. If there is something that brings you happiness, you should go after it. Just my thoughts. ^_^

    17. age is not a problem for this hobby. although some people that I know find me weird, they also think that at my age i should not be wasting my money on dolls :doh but who cares? this hobby is making me happy.

    18. That sexism isn't a one-way-street. I know many men that are told to 'grow up' and stop wasting money on playing & collecting videos games, or collecting model trains and cars, etc.

As far as dolls, sexism would be less towards women (because it's culturally acceptable for woman to have dolls) than towards men where it's 'bad enough' to be 'wasting money' let alone to be wasting it on dolls!

    19. I don't believe there is any such thing as being too old to do something we enjoy. If someone likes having BJDs, then I don't think anyone should tell them they can't because of their age. That's just my opinion on it anyway :).

    20. I don't think you ever get too old?
I mean... My dad is still playing with cars, he's 55!

      You never get too old.
