How Old is TOO Old?

Sep 12, 2012

    1. I agree with the general sentiment expressed by others in this thread ^^
I don't think there's an age limit for anyone to do anything they love! There's not such a thing as "too old"! As long as there's no harm done, what does anyone else has to do with it? There's nothing pathetic in being happy, and if others feel this way, they are the ones who are wrong.
Many of my hobbies are frowned upon by some people (who, fortunately, mean nothing to me) for being "childish" or weird, but I just can't bring myself to care! I couldn't count the number of people who felt like they were in a position to criticize me because of my "unusual" tastes if I tried, but who cares? These people certainly couldn't care less about me, they just enjoy looking down on other, imo;)

Luckily, my friends and family don't have that kind of preconceived notion against doll-collecting or anything else - and it would be hypocritical if things weren't that way, because, after all, each of us have our different "weird" or "childish" hobbies, all of us being of different ages.
I wouldn't want to to keep someone in my personal life who would be capable of telling me that something I like or love is "sinister" or "pathetic" just because of my age. :)

    2. idk, i've been told once by some idiot on the bus that i must apparently be a pedofile since i have dolls and i'm in my mid 20s. that kind of make me giggle and give him a weird look, the guy was carrying a old gameboy. i told him that he must also be one then if he's 30 something and still plays video games. Dolls are just something i do with my daughter, i've ALWAYS collected dolls, i do have other more "mature" *shudders* collections like teacups (idk why, i guess to offset my moms teapot collection? o.o) but really? telling me i have some sinister motive for collecting something cute? XD i've never been told its childish, but that its creepy or rather that my dolls are creepy XD (my nearly 30 year old brother is terrified of my dolls, my mom is freaked out by my Dollmore Reaa doll, etc) but i have gotten more POSITIVE feedback than negative, even from older generations.
One of my boyfriend's coworkers has started collecting BJDs since she saw my first doll :) my dad loves my dolls, think's they're cool, especially since he had to help me fix the eyelashes on my Alice doll the 3rd day i had her. Most of my guy friends just sort of smile and tell me i'm adorable with my doll obsession XD one even asks me every day "hey, how's *insert doll name* doing? did you fix their outfit?" or something along those lines :)
Dont let people tell you what to love no matter your age, or gender for that matter :) just cause they dont like it doesnt mean you shouldnt

    3. My grandma didn't have a doll of her own until she bought one for herself when she was in her 70s.
So...whatever. If you decide you're too old, you're too old. If someone else tells you as much, they're too nosy.

    4. I don't know where people get the idea that dolls are substitutes for children, anyway. I have a child. I don't dress her like a doll or play with her like a doll. She's a person. Likewise, I don't treat my dolls like children. I paint them, pose them, photograph them, etc., but I don't teach them about the world, discipline them, rock them to sleep, etc.

Dolls are no substitute for children and a child is not a doll.

As to the original question, you're never too old for the things that make you happy as long as you're not hurting yourself or anyone else.

    5. Collecting BJD is just a hobyy as normal as sports. nobody could say no to any other's hobby, cuz everyone has the right to get themselves in proper way. Im so lucky my family and friends never said that to me. and when the day comes that I do not love them anymore, maybe its the "too old" day then~~

    6. Oh, dear! I didn't mean it to be. I'm 52.

When I started the thread, I believed that the board demographic trended young (teens to early twenties). It's cool, and also surprising, to see how many elder stateswomen/statesmen have responded.

    7. Very true. Age is relative to where a person stands. When I was young, the difference between a freshman and senior was equal to decades to how I see it now. The difference seemed so much wider when I was young, and feels almost non-existent as I get older. [and I'm amazed how much slimmer my Mom looks, as I get older ^^] ~ I started working when I was 14 and led a very driven, and "adult" life until I was 40. And I had all kinds of health problems that I might have been genetically disposed to, but I have no doubt the lack of relaxation was a major contributor. I couldn't imagine doing AnY-thing that did not serve one of the higher, adult and also eternal values. Those are still good values, but by almost dying of cancer when I was 41, I learned that "unstringing the bow" was also an important part of a healthy adult person's life. The concept of a hobby is still foreign to some of my family. I am so grateful for the ability to have fun now, and enjoy other people who are simply having fun. [definition of a hobby?] ..... I wanted to express sympathy to Bluemoonjules for the loss of her sister. You are an example of how this hobby gives so many different things to different people, with dates of birth all over the centuries, and for all sorts of good things, like you described: RECAPTURE SOMETHING OF OUR SHARED CHILDHOOD. There is no reason to put an age limit on that either.

    8. When I was young I decided to stop playing with dolls to be a more "mature" young person, and a lot of kids made fun of me for keeping them even after that so I feel for giving up something you love because of others. To me, no age is too old to be in the hobby!

    9. You are never too old to do something you love. No one should care what others think, if you are an adult you should not care. Be proud to do what you do. I know that older people love dolls because I see them on their selves and in glass cases. Does that make them children? No. I am proud to have the dolls I have and I feel that I am doing something cool that I might be able to pass down to my children someday. Even if my dolls have yellowed some lol.

    10. I used to be relatively embarrassed about this hobby, because I felt like I was weird or "too old" for the hobby at 22 when I "officially" got into it. But, since then, I've completely thrown that to the wind. There is no age limit on what makes you happy. It's a huge artistic outlet.

I think my mother put it right when I was talking to her about it at one point: "It's just another form of art for you. It's wonderful!" And, it helps to see that there is a huge age range in the hobby. I love that!

And, I'll stop collecting dolls when I die. It's as simple as that. ^_^

    11. How old is too old? - 110 years of age!

    12. I had a friend who used to tell me often enough that my dolls were stupid, that I could collect barbies for less money, and, worst of all, that I should have stopped playing with dolls in elementary school like the rest of the world. It hurt. For a minute, I almost thought she was right.

But then I realized that it was absolutely none of her business.

My dolls make me happy. :) As long as they continue to do so, why should I stop? If I continue collecting well into my 90s, should I make it to that age, why should anyone care? That's my reasoning. As long as you're physically and financially able to collect and it makes you happy you don't ever need to stop. :D

    13. I went through a period up until my early 30s where I
felt like I had to pay attention to what other people thought. I repressed certain interests because I thought things like manga/anime, video games, and playing with dolls were not things proper grown-ups did. Eventually that shell I had created started to fall away. To think of all the things I missed out on. Making up for lost
and wasted time - but so glad I now feel comfortable with hobbies like BJDs.

    14. As of this posting, I am 37, and only got into dolls back in 2007 (now 2013). I was not in to Barbie or other fashion dolls when I was younger. I would say I have hit my 2nd childhood, oddly, my Dad never left his 1st. My mom has a few dozen of the Harry Potter Tonner dolls, but it's only because they are Harry Potter, she doesn't seem to be interested in collecting BJDs, yet.

It wasn't until I hit 30 that I finally wasn't trying to seek my mother's approval anymore.

    15. There is no 'too old'! :) My Gram passed away when she was just over 100, and that wonderful woman had them lined up across the back of her couch where she could see them whenever she was in the living room! She would have scoffed at anyone who suggested she was too old for anything, LOL! I plan to follow in her footsteps! ;)

    16. There shouldn't be an age limit on enjoyment. Anyone of any age can find that within this hobby, I'm sure. I'm only seventeen, but as I grow older, I can't, by a long stretch, see myself ever growing out of this precious hobby. The concept that certain things are meant for a particular gender or age group is null and void. My Little Pony's popularity with women and men of all ages is a prime example.

    17. Well most of the older members have much more dolls than a younger one becouse they workand that.

After all, i think that the people who makes them in the different companies are not like 20 or 20 years old. For making a great job people needs experince and skill, and those suffs are just posible when you have a certain time doing something.

Besides, is a hobby, who says that someone is too old for being a music, drawing, painting, sports or whatever lover?...

I think that there is not a "TOO Old" status for a bjd lover.

    18. I don't think there's a such thing as too old for just about any hobby, but personally I believe in appreciating youth. Basically if you're enjoying something and not doing any harm at any age, I think that's awesome and people can right on keep doing what makes them happy.

    19. Probably when that collector is over 250 years old, but that might have to do with the fact that he or she is a vampire. ANY vampire playing with dolls is supect.

    20. I love having a sinister hobby. ;) And being older, it's great-- no one wants to ask you why you are digging in the dumpster outside radio shack, for example-- they just move along. (The answer, had they asked why, would be: "I'm making a 1/3 scale cyborg" *cackle*).
