Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. How Old is TOO Old?

Sep 12, 2012

    1. I don't really think there is an age limit but you always get people thinking of dolls as toys, or as a creepy thing people get when they are lonely or something... but collecting dolls isn't much different than any other collection...Of course I have noted that most people who harass me or make fun of me for collecting dolls tend to be the kind of people who collect children, and have two babies on each arm...

    2. I've always viewed age as just a number. But even with that, I try not to think too much about what other people think of my hobby. It is interesting though, to see how different ages view the hobby and how they participate in it.

    3. My mom has a doll collection (antique dolls) so I don't consider any age too old really. She doesn't actually buy any anymore but she used to (as an adult.)

    4. I don't think there is an age limit, if it's a passion, you can keep going on till you are not bored!
      the age doesn't count! ;)

    5. If anything; I've always considered dollcollecting to be an old lady kind of hobby, and that I am a bit too young (24) to be so into it.

Its not like we're actually playing with dolls in the same manner you did when you were five. These things are expensive, and thus obviously catering towards people with a disposable income.

    6. My mother is 44 years old and she likes dolls. She is a grown-up woman with master's degree, but collecting dolls makes her happy. So I don't see a reason why a person can't do such harmless thing as collecting dolls, if this person is able to pay for the dolls and staff.
I also know a man, who is about 45 years old. He has a really well-paid job and is considered to be a serious and trustworthy person by his colleagues. His hobby is collecting model cars. I don't think that he should stop buying model cars just because he isn't a small boy anymore. He enjoys his hobby and I think he shouldn't quit it.

    7. Taking down my post.

    8. No, absolutely not. Having age-limitations about something that is passionating you is ridiculous.

    9. There is no "too old" in a hobby, in my opinion. Why set an age limit where you have to give up what you love doing? If you still love doing it, you should continue to do it and not care what others think. ^^

    10. Why should you ever be "too old" for things you enjoy? I don't plan to ever let my hobbies be limited by my age [unless it was something dangerous or something.. but I think dolls are pretty safe lol]

    11. It's going to be short but;

Considering myself "young" at 23, i'd say that people considered more "old" does not have to feel any pressure or feel shy because of that hobby, honestly at any age you can feel the pressure because there is always going to have people that will disagree with collecting doll and so the amount of money we put in them.

    12. This is so simple and to the point and I couldn't agree more!

    13. I think the ONLY instance where it would be creepy is if the older user was using the hobby to get into contact with younger users. That is a concern for anyone in any hobby where children/teens can join. Take for instance cosplay. Super fun, look at all the great seamstresses and problem solving solutions to parts in the manga/ anime that do not conform to the laws of physics. But then you've got a creepy older guy (in this case) who is taking video/ pictures of children/ teens in school girl outfits. Then you realize that the man is not related to them. Let's face it, those pictures/ video are not going to be used to document the event. That's actually why I stopped attending anime cons; they're a pedophiles dream and I just got way too freaked out. Which is sad because the friendly atmosphere and automatic feeling of acceptance (these are my people!!!) was really special.
So the potential is there for someone to misuse this hobby. But for the majority of us, it's a wonderful creative outlet and expression of beauty so individuals of most ages join.

    14. I am 23 now and thinking about to get started with BJDs.
It' s expensive so i wonder how all the younger ones can be part of this hobby.
By the way my grandmother collected dolls during her whole life. If you really like your hobby you can never be to old in my opinion ;)

    15. I tottally agree being twenty one and having younger cusins who think its weird made me feel a bit to old but I still do grown up things so why dose it matter. I suspect when I'm gray ill has one of those infamous gramma doll shelves.

    16. You hear of the little boy who loved model trains and now he's a grown man riding miniature train sets? Yeah, he's cool. Now imagine that same boy, but with G.I. Joe, and now he's a man with a bjd. He's cool.

    17. I am 41 years old. I made tons of costumes over the past 25 years (medieval, cosplay, fantasy, etc). I am glad no one ever told me I was too old to attend anime cons, especially since I cosplayed my little 2 years old boy as Kenshin Himura (he's got natural red hairs).

I just ordered my first BJD doll to start a nice hobby with my newborn daughter (yeah, I know, it's gonna take a few years). I will be stunned if someone dare to tell me I am too old for BJD, cosplay, or even to go watch a Pixar movie. I think I would laugh right in their face...

    18. Why when I as a kid you couldn't buy dolls, you had to make them out of mud and sticks!! Or walk miles through the dangerous forest to get to find a field where you could collect some straw and tie it together and bring it back to the cave! You kids these days got it easy, no saber tooth tigers chasing you or wooly mammoths stepping on your dolls and such......

Seriously though, because my background is sorta punk, goth with a large amount of academia I don't really over think the age thing because I pretty much still live my life as I always have. I guess that means I never grew up. So sometimes at work there's these mainstream guys with families and mortgages and an unhappy life of responsibility and sometimes they seem so old to me. Then I'll realize that I'm older than some them but they come off as much older because they don't seem to enjoy life. Often they also think I'm much younger than I am because I continue to do the things that I enjoy and in some ways engage with the world in a way they don't. There was this woman at work doing some sewing for my doll and they guys found out and so I showed them bjd's online and because they found it so creepy that to them it seemed appropriate for me. But there's sort of a pass on ageism because they think that I'm free and tell me as such. As many people have pointed out, age is a state of mind and what I was trying to get across with my anecdote is that interestingly enough, other people often recognize that. We're never too old to do the things we enjoy. I love hearing the age ranges of all the people into this. I recently saw some women dressing in some witchy-type Lolita style and they were in their 60's and said they'd be doing costume-y and theatrical stuff before we had terms like cosplay. I thought that was supercool.

    19. I don't think you're ever too old to collect dolls.....my dad is 66 & collects & plays with train sets.....so if collecting dolls whether you're young or old makes you happy, then I say good on you ;)

    20. LOVE this!
