1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How Old is TOO Old?

Sep 12, 2012

    1. So long as you're not hurting yourself, others, or breaking any laws, I don't see why age should limit what you really want to do. So, I personally don't think there is a age limit.

    2. I know people in their late 80's owning a large dolls collection.

    3. I am *cough* well past 30 *cough* and I don't drink, smoke or do drugs, I barely even swear. I pay my taxes and I vote in every election (I live in the US).

I also watch anime, sci fi, fantasy and horror, collect anime-related things, play Pokemon and other videogames and play Dungeons and Dragons. I listen to Gothic music and have always considered myself a Japanophile. (I dress "Gothic Otaku" style, and yes, I made that term up. :kitty1)

And as of 2007, I collect BJD friends. All of these things make me happy. I decided when I was a kid, that I was going to do what makes me happy. And BJDs/anime/D&D/scifi/etc all do.

My hobbies don't hurt anyone. I pay for them with my own money and I save up to buy them and many of the clothes and other things they need. I also hand-sew clothes for them.

I don't care what family, friends, or anyone else thinks. The rest of the world that doesn't "approve of older people having fun" can kiss off. >:P What am I supposed to do once I retire, sit in a rocking chair wait to die? Not me!

    4. You're never too old for dolls. :D

    5. Totally agree---

    6. Wow. In my experience it is very rare to come across someone who doesn't drink, smoke, or do drugs. I say this because I don't either :) Though, even at my advanced age (48) I still swear :| but not near the way I used to in my 20's.

I also vote, have watched a few anime, and my hobbies don't hurt anyone. The one Japanese thing I'm into are the Vocaloids. They were one of the reasons I visited Japan.

    7. LOL I love this... here where I live I saw on a doll club web page a certain member was celebrating her 100th birthday and she had her first/fave doll still! (doll = 90ish O_o). If you love them think about 'too old' after you're dead LOL. I am 45 this year and I did't START actually collecting dolls (started with Barbie collectibles) until I was in my mid 20's.

    8. I'm 38 and I'm not too old now, nor will I ever be. I work at a video game company, and everyone has some kind of doll or toys they are into. I know a lot of adults that are pretty hardcore Lego fanatics, many who are into My Little Pony, and quite a large number who are cosplayers for whom every day may as well be halloween. You're never to old to play, and putting age limits on material goods like dolls and toys is just silly IMHO.

What's the point of growing up and earning money if you can't use it to buy toys!?

    9. I am considered 'elderly' but I love dolls, not playing with them as I did as a child but considering them as an art form, have only recently discovered these resin ones and so wish I had earlier. But I just enjoy seeing them all and everyday seeing ones that are new to me. I am fascinated by the different sculpts and how each doll is an individual creation according to how it is dressed etc. I do my very best to share my enthusiasm with my grandchildren and hope they will go on to be collectors.

    10. there is no such thing as "too old"...well, except for dead, I think being dead is too old to be playing with/collecting/liking dolls.

    11. An 84 year old doll buddy just bought Dollmore Elysia...the lucky dog.*_*

    12. I am 58, I started collecting dolls at 36, I was buy dolls for my daughter. Before that I only collected miniatures and trolls.

    13. I don't drink very much (half a pint every few months at a party), don't smoke, don't do drugs. I swear like a trooper though. I'm 20 :)

    14. Absolutely!

If you think you're too old, you're probably too young to have gathered enough self-confidence to do what you want with your life. Or dead.
BJDs are not aimed at children or young people who don't have enough money on hand to afford them. Unless you have a sponsor or generous parents, you'll probably be at a considerable age to be able to buy your first doll.

Writing this, I just remember … as a child I had a friend whose parents considered her too old to play with toys when she was 10 years old. She was only allowed to play games. So, too old can actually be very young …

    15. Recently, on a city trip to Paris, I went to Joliedoll, a shop that specialises in Pullips but which also sells some BJD things. While I was there, a woman and her daughter (13 or 14 years old, I'm guessing), came in looking for clothes for the girl's Pullip. Looking around the shop, the mother was so delighted with the dolls that she ended up buying one for herself. I thought that was just wonderful and I felt vaguely jealous. I have parents who say, "Sigune dear, you do realise that your ... doll ... thing ... is weird, don't you?" Of course, because I am 33 and haven't got children, they think that I collect dolls to compensate for my lack of offspring. Please allow me to roll my eyes at that. Also, to suggest that a person shouldn't be creative with dolls because they are past childhood is a bit silly. I picked up a 'make your own brooch' set the other day that mentioned as an age bracket, "8-88". I feel like that would be more apt for BJDs too - though I guess, in view of some of the reactions to this topic, that "8-108" would be even more apt :P.

    16. I am glad to see another 'late starter' at collecting! Even though I don't have kids (and the dolls are not replacements for them). I started collecting Barbie late (20's) And I had to wait nearly 10 years later than I had wanted to but ya sometimes life happens ><. But my dolls take the edge off of that ;).

    17. I am so glad I found this forum. I always felt so awkward being in my early 40's and owning dolls. Now after finding out that I am not alone in this age group I am a little more confident and not trying to make excuses for why I have them. It is always nice to know you are not alone.

    18. I don't feel old. I've gone to the LA Dolpa and a few events at the Volks mansion years ago. There seems to be a wide range of ages represented.

    19. My point exactly! I don't feel "old" either, even though I'm in my 60s. I really believe age is a state of mind; you're only as old as you think you are! ;)

    20. I have just turned 40, and I find the concept of 'too old' simply a waste of my time.

I remember back when I was 12, reading the book "The Last Battle" by C.S. Lewis (Narnia Series). There was a discussion on how Susan was no longer a friend of Narnia:

Let's just say I feel that some folks' concept of "Grown up" is the silliest thing I ever heard or read. I decided right after I read that passage that I will never focus on growing up, and just enjoy life. And my life includes my dolls. So, if someone tells me to 'grow up' because I don't fit their ideal of a 'normal/productive/sane' member of society, I'd tell 'em to grow up themselves.
