I now have clarification for this...the fee is 10% of the item's declared value in AUD, e.g. a $40 USD item is currently $58 AUD and therefore a $5.80 AUD Customs fee. According to AusPost's website, this was the response to the US Supreme Court ruling on tariffs from the 24 of February and will last at least 150 days. It just sucks that if anyone wants to send anything to friends or family in the US, they now have to pay a fee unless the package is declared at $0 value, which of course means no insurance
