1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How will the recently implemented tariffs affect your doll collecting?

Nov 9, 2024

    1. Off topic but You should read the deagle report before moving to Europe. I'm just saying

    2. Thank you! I will make sure to do so.

    3. I'm just hoping trade tariffs don't ruin my ability to buy any chinese produced dolls. I was part of the group that ordered the new super flexible body they're working on.

    4. In the past they have not placed tariffs on orders by individuals.

    5. @nancy_schroeder_ca That's because most individual orders fell within the de minimis exemption, but with that possibly going away I imagine more regular folks are going to get hit with duty taxes.

    6. I firmly believe I'm on a list with Canada Customs. They've made a nice little hunk of cash off me over the years due to the dolls. I had to cough up just under $64 yesterday for one of my boys (ot for this thread). It's not the most I've paid but it hurts regardless.

    7. So far all my Chinese goods (shoes, eyes, heads) have arrived in a plastic cover with a USA address and no tariffs. But I have a body that should be coming soon and we will see!

    8. So far so good here too. I did get a doll from Alice's Collections a few weeks ago, no tariffs yet. And I've been getting small packages OK. Everyone seems to be using third party delivery services, that for some reason always deliver early Sunday morning. :sweat

    9. Eliminating the de minimis exception (items under $800) is going to be difficult, I suspect. The first time the Administration tried to do so, the USPS shut down and refused to reopen until the exception was reinstated.
      Wild times we live in...

    10. General minimum here in Canada is a $20 value. It's bumped to $60 if the item is marked as a gift. Those numbers don't stack either. Customs fees are annoying but also totally random in nature here. I've had expensive dolls zip right through with no fees and an $80 outfit get nailed and spend a week just sitting in Customs without moving.

Clear as I can tell, it's generally a 50/50 chance of fees most times although with the way of things currently, I strongly suspect they're paying much closer attention to packages coming from the US based on my recent experiences.

    11. That's a bit of an exaggeration. USPS didn't refuse to reopen until the exception was reinstated. They put a temporary hold on packages coming in from China as they tried to figure out a way to implement Trumps new executive order. And then they reversed the decision a few days later, but in the mean time it caused a lot of confusion, packages backed up at the ports and eventually Trump temporarily reversed his order to give USPS and the Customs and Border Protection time to figure things out.

    12. FYI for any fellow Canadians (or people sending/receiving Canadian packages), there may be another postal disruption/strike starting May 22, 2025. The strike that happened in November/December 2024 was never resolved (the collective agreement was extended until May 21, 2025) so the postal workers could be in another legal strike position if both sides haven't hammered out the situation by then.

    13. I'm wondering how much it is going to cost me when my Fairyland order eventually comes in. I thought it would have shipped by now, but it hasn't and who knows what the tariffs are going to be like to claim my dolls once they come in. This is really going to slow down a lot of peoples' collecting habits.

    14. According to today's list, 25% on imports from South Korea, 24% from Japan, 54% from China (ouch).

    15. Ouch. Need to make sure I've got cash for that. I feel really stupid now having made a big order.

    16. Yikes. I’m waiting on a Mandrake order to ship. Mandrake shipped it, now waiting to get into the US. I hope it gets into the US before I have to pay up.

    17. Yeah, I'm adding an addendum to my previous statement: 25-35% tariffs on my ABJD purchases is highway robbery, in my opinion, and it leaves a sour taste in my mouth to even consider paying that much (particularly because of whom that extra cash is going to). I'm torn between being heartbroken, as this puts dolls on a more-or-less indefinite hiatus, and incandescent rage, because a trade war can and will tank the U.S. economy.

Ugh and also yikes (because there aren't words strong enough).

    18. The idea that tariffs on US imports will lead to domestic increase in production is ridiculous in so many ways. Just looking at it from our hobby point of view, we're not suddenly going to develop the manufacturing capabilities for doll making just because of the expense of import. We don't have that kind of industry, not for plastics, not for fabrics...

The artists and brands, the resin production, the casting facilities, the clothing and wig manufacture are all in other countries - Not to mention the impact all of this will have on second hand sales.

I do make a habit of visiting Japan every few years, looks like I'll just be spending more money in person where I am able.
I mean, assuming I'm still free to move about and leave the country...

    19. Just not ordering dolls anymore, basically. I will still take hit from ordering clothing and wigs though but dolls are just too high in price for me to keep collecting them. I'll buy second hand of course but aside from 1 on my list, I'm done collecting new resin.

    20. So not long after I made my post yesterday, I got my shipping email. I'll update when the package arrives so others in the States have an idea of what to expect. This is definitely going to impact my further collecting. Despite knowing this was likely going to be the case, it still stings.
