How You Named Your Doll

Nov 12, 2015

    1. I've never sat down to think of a name, in a weird way I wait until they tell me. No wonder people think I'm weird...
My first girl, a gorgeous Goldie I named "Gale". It just felt right, calming, serene like she makes me feel.
My second girl, my sweet Chloe I named "Abbey". It's a small dedication to my favorite band The Beatles and coincidentally when you put my two girls together you get Abbey Gale.
My third girl, darling little Ashley I insisted on ordering yesterday. I had no idea why I just had to have her, then this morning with the passing of our loved David Bowie I knew she gave me her name. She will be my "Bowie". :( :)

    2. I wanted japanese or korean names.
My first dolls are named Shun and ryo
Those names just came to me

My other two are named Makoto and Misaki
Because I like saying Makoto. And i looked up the meaning of the names and it fitted my dolls personality

    3. all year long, when I read, watch tv or listen a music, I note names I love
can be usual / fantasy / ethnic girl name
so when a doll came : I just have to pick up a name from this list

    4. I wanted to give my DD a Japanese name (since she is anime style), and I just liked the sound of Ryoko (for some reason I tend to be drawn to names that begin with R or have a strong R sound). I think my second doll, who is going to be fantasy inspired, will be named Arwen (obvious LoTR reference is obvious, but I also just like the sound of the name)

    5. My first doll's sculpt was named "Celine", which also happens to be my best friend's name. I've considered looking for other names for her but my friend won't let me change it, haha. :sweat

    6. My girls are almost always either named after my RP/D&D characters or called by their sculpt name.

    7. I feel compelled to give all my dolls character backgrounds that match their actual country of origin, so most of mine end up having Korean names. I spend a lot of time looking at possibilities and seeing which names I like the sound of and how they feel with the face of the doll. I can't usually be sure whether a name will fit until I get the doll, but I use the waiting time to come up with one or two strong possibilities. (I like to look up what names were popular in the country of origin for the year the character would have been born.) For the most part, the top possibility ends up becoming the doll's name. I guess thinking things like "two more months till so-and-so arrives!" kind of cements the idea, even when I haven't decided for sure that that's his name. Then again, I never did come up with a real name for my Souldoll Onulharu, so he's just been Haru this whole time...

      My dolls also all have the last name Lee regardless of their stories because... they're all my inanimate family and I want them to share a name even though their characters aren't related. Luckily it's a very common last name. ^^;

    8. My doll's name goes from sculpt, Sherlock, but name and sculpt are only things that connect him with Sherlock BBC which he supposed to be, cause my Sherlock seems to be absolutely different character. However, I cannot find a better name for him cause this really suits. So he is not Holmes, but Sherlock:)

    9. Since I plan for most of my dolls being elves, I go on elf name generator websites and spend a while looking for names. Then, when that doesn't work I think of a concept I want the name to be based off of (stars, plants, flowers) and look up elven translations of the concept.

    10. Well I had the word Caldera and its meaning written down and when I found DC's Alberta, in fit her so well! For Bubblegum, it just fit into his character and a quote I like for him. I also have Greenie, Candy and Riley, really it's just not a big deal if the names aren't 'real' names.

    11. It took me a solid week to finally name Nadeko. I hadn't given her name any thought at all while I was saving (or even waiting for her to arrive) and freaked out when she arrived and I couldn't come up with a name right away.
I knew I wanted her first name to end with "ko" and I also wanted her name to include the kanji "天" so I eventually settled on "Nadeko" because it ended in "ko" and I love the character Sengoku Nadeko. Her last name is "Amano" has the kanji "天" and is the last name of one of my favorite mangaka "Amano Kozue" (and the meaning fits well too).

Now when I see or hear a name or kanji that I like somewhere I add it to a list so my future dolls won't have this problem although I'm not entirely sure that it'll help but it certainly won't hurt. :sweat

    12. My doll's name is Olive Rose. I knew she would be that name before she arrived when I was looking for eyes and I came across these beautiful olive color eyes and I decided her name then. I am looking now for the right color fabric to make her an outfit with the colors rose and olive in them .

    13. It's very random how I come up with their names. With some of my dolls I wanted to go really cutesy - like Grape Jelly and Blueberry for my cheese mice. I like to go with my favorite names when I can. I often get ideas before my dolls arrive what I would name them, but more times than not, the name doesn't fit.

    14. Nakedo is so pretty! You have really good naming skills.

    15. Well I decided Avian needed an elf name. So I looked up random words, flowers, bird names and somewhere Avian came up. Avian azalea sounds cool to say and I think it fits them perfectly. Theo is their human name in the story. I loved the name Theo when I read the book Awake and Dreaming. That's how I've named my dolls so far anyway.

    16. Thank you! :blush

    17. I'm with you, I usually wait for something to come to me. Sometimes the first time I dress a doll it's just an automatic "You're Maria" and sometimes they sit there staring at me, unnamed for weeks until something pops into my head. That can take a while but I'm usually happiest with names that come as epiphanies of a sort. And then other times I can't get over calling a doll by her default name, like my Dollfie Dream Aoi. I tried like hell to force a couple of original names on her but I could not stop thinking of her as "Aoi." So Aoi she is, and it's fine if there are a million other Aois. My name is Chris and I've never felt bad about having such a common name for my age after all! ;)

And sometimes names are based on random inspiration; for example I am going to take seeing your post today as a bit of inspiration and find a name from a Bowie song for my as yet unnamed SD16. It would suit her; she looks like a child of the 70's and David Bowie is one of my oldest heroes and dearest inspirations. And it would be nice to memorialize him in my little world in some way. :(

    18. My very first doll was named after the friend who got me into the hobby. Everyone after that the name just came to me or I used this sibling name generator website.

    19. My gals name is Emma Valerious. First name Emma comes from Emma Frost...former white Queen Of The Hellfire Club and Valerious from Anna Valerious. The vampire hunter from the movie Van Helsing. :XD:

    20. The names for my characters come from pretty random places... For my doll characters, there's a Latin word theme, which is probably very hackneyed but I just really like Latin xD My only human character in that story is named August Thatch--August as a nod to all the Latin (plus I just like that name for a girl) and Thatch because it was Blackbeard the pirate's real surname (supposedly) and that really struck me. What an innocuous and cute-sounding name for a pirate. I just had to give that name to a character. Not all my characters have so much thought in their names though. I'll sometimes get a guy like "hey my name's George" and I'll just be like "alright then, that's a boring name but I guess you wouldn't lie to me would you George"
