How You Named Your Doll

Nov 12, 2015

    1. That's a good question!
It depends of the doll. I like to search for their name, so it doesn't bother me if I don't find it quickly. But it really changes from a doll to another. I like to choose a name that will fit their character and sometimes I go from a name to another before choosing their final name. It happens for my Dollstown Soph B, that I called Rajni, then Murmure, then Silence before choosing Keshi (a name she is wearing since 7 years now).
For some dolls I know what will be their name before I actually bought them. That's why I know I'm waiting for Garry, a Ringdoll zombie kane, and Ursuline, an Elfdoll Sian. :whee:
For others they "tell' it to me when I have them in hands. That's what happen for Zéphyr, my little Rebel Sarang.
And some times they inspire me nothing. That's usually not a good point for them

    2. It has been a bit different for each doll. It sounds cheesy now, but I dreamed the name Remedy Violet for my Volks Kun, so I knew what I wanted to call her once she arrived. One of my favorite artists is Remedios Varo, so I liked the connection there, too. Munkie was named as an alternate spelling of "monkey" because to me, a Pippitan had the cheekiness of a monkey. I knew I wanted a boy doll named Japser because I loved the name (and not because I love Twilight) and I fell in love with Leeke Mihael, and thought he'd be perfect with that name. My Domadoll Cooki was the hardest to name, she's an awesome, unique doll, but nothing seemed to fit her. She sat nameless for awhile before I settled on Guppy Ramone; Guppy because her mouth seemed a but like she was making fish lips, and Ramone because I love The Ramones. Edel was named from a character in Princess Tutu. I do have one doll I renamed, she started as Starseed from a song, but I decided to change her name to Bramble because I shifted her style/character, and it made more sense. She resisted at first, but now she seems...right. Mostly I like to take things from their characteristics, or from songs or bands or shows I like, or a combination of factors to find the perfect name.

    3. i usually try looking up the kind of doll i want. what kind of character then i use baby name generators to give me ideas CX then i also ask my friends what they like because i like to know what they like as well. Otherwise it takes me a good month to plan a proper character. it was like that with my first doll

    4. I ask my doll what their name is. So, while I"m waiting for the doll to arrive, I pick out a group of names I like, then narrow it down.
When the doll arrives, I say the names to it, and it picks the name it likes. I have Tristan, Mayumi, Lilly, Sloane, Yvaine, Morwenna, River , Wren, Micah, Bree and Michaela.( Tristan and Yvaine are actually from one of my favorite movies Stardust.)

    5. I didn't know what I wanted to name her until it came to me. It came to me during a photoshoot with my doll. That's how I knew her name was Reika.

    6. All of my dolls, with the exception of a Hujoo Phoebe, are purchased to be physical embodiments of characters I have had for at least three years. For me, I think, it helps ensure a bond, and I don't waste time trying out different wigs or clothing styles that I determine to not fit.

The one exception to this so far is a Hujoo Phoebe I bought because quite frankly the price was unbeatable, but I've done NOTHING with her in almost a year now, and I feel really bad about that. A friend also wants to go in halvies on a doll deal going on a site where it's buy one get one 50% off so we can split the total cost but I'm not sure I have a character that fits any of the sculpts so I'm a little worried (but I'm a sucker for a good deal). So, in the end, naming is really easy for me. :'D

    7. Most of my planned dolls already have names, since I'm planning to model them after existing ocs of mine. Arwen was hard for me to name since I had no plans for her. I named her by looking up themed names, I originally had a different name for her but calling her it just didn't sound right.

    8. My dolls are shells for my OCs, so there's that. It usually works out, except for my first doll, who has undergone so many changes that I'm starting to get annoyed haha. First she was Ambrosia, then Vendemiaire, now she's Lacrimosa. I never had a set character for her, and the OC that she was originally for didn't fit her, so yeah...

    9. I have a real trouble giving names for my dolls. Usually I use names that have some meaning to me such as video game names... but the I feel like the doll hasn't got its own name :doh it's a real trouble. Many of my dolls are still nameless. ..

    10. It's mostly always about the inspiration or/and perhaps what I felt "right". Its all down to me and my randomness at times. I would normally came up with names before I even have them. Now this is quite the opposite of what people would usually do, I get it lol. Normally its the doll that makes the name. But for me, its the name that makes the doll.

I'm planning for my first male to be, Alexander David (Alex) and my first female will be Andrea Laurie. However I'm still not yet set, this might change overtime.

    11. I'm picking names spontaneously xD
The names are from songs, artists or anmies...from stories. For example Lilian is named after the song "Lilian" by Depeche Mode because I loved to listen to it when I got her (and when I was thinking about her).
And my new girl Nora is named after the character "Nora" from my last favourite anime "Noragami".

This may sounds cold and stupid because the names are not soooooo meaningfull, but the names will always remind me to things I like :D

    12. As strange as it sounds, my dolls tend to name themselves. All my doll belong in the same story and new characters come and go, but sometimes I'll see a doll and it will be a certain character. I then check out what the name means and see why a characters picked that name. This is how I named all of my current girls.

    13. Sometimes I use these random name generators and randomly search names until I get some fitting ones and then choose from those c:

    14. like many others, i wrote a book about my characters and my dolls are based off of those characters c: i like to create the character and THEN search for a doll to match what he/she looks like in my head. that way i don't have trouble naming of figuring out who he/she is haha.

    15. Baby names website is my go to to find names. I write fan fictions and most of the dolls I have are characters from my fan fictions. I usually create a character, name and personality and all before I even start on a doll and if there is one character I really like the most and have connection to, I start looking for the doll for the character and go from there.
There are few times where I got the dolls before the character emerged and often, I ended up selling the doll off because I don't have the connection and interest in them. I look at dolls and go, "oh they're pretty but I don't have a need or desire for that" but when I see a doll and bam, for example, "that doll is so perfect for ZackI got to have him!" And then I start trying to figure out how to obtain him and I'll be obsessed until he is in my hands and completed. ^_^
Everyone's have their own ways, my advice, baby names website and look up the name meaning. It helps in fitting with the personality of your doll.

    16. Minette, which is a nickname that means "Kitten" is a beautiful, feminine name, and very historical. Henriette Marie Stuart, sister of King Charles the First of England, and wife of Phillippe, Duc d'Orleans was known as Minette. She was considered a delicate little beauty, and as witty and gracious as she was lovely.

Poussey is a town in France near Romilly-sur-Seine and Mery-sur-Seine. Poussins is a delicate brand of porcelain. And there's Poussey Washington, the character on Orange Is The New Black.

My favorite guitarist is Andres Segovia (you can hear him here: , creating his magic in the beauty of the Alhambra) so who is yours?

    17. I think names are important. They should impart a sense of who you are, your essence, so I always think two or three times before I chose a name. That being said, I am hoping to find the right doll to enshell my character, Tamsin Kitchener. I've loved the name Tamsin for over a decade now. I also have a Yun doll that I need to find the right eyes for, to enshell another character, Aisha Kamaria. I tend to write stories, and *then* find dolls for them, but not always. I might pick from different inspirations--a novel, a poem, name sites..but the name has to mean something to me for me to use it.

    18. They usually just tell me who they are, but when no I look at one of the baby names sites and then one usually appeals to me as a good fit. The hard time is remembering and using the names. When we talk about the dolls I find we need to use the company names so people know who we are talking about. So often I still use those names or have do something like Carina/Cara or Eva/Erin or whoever.

    19. Wow...the names are so cool. I just name my doll with my favorite food, cream cream and cookie.:celebrate

    20. Absolutely awesome. Icecream and cookies are the food of the *gods*. Particuarly chocolate.
