Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Hypothetically speaking... Would you take on a restoration project?

Feb 22, 2013

    1. Oh wow. The thread you linked is intense! That would be such a huge project! But yes... I would do it for the right doll. If I really wanted the doll and it was reasonably priced it would definitely be worth the time and effort to me and would probably make the doll more special because I would feel like I 'rescued' it.

    2. I am there! I bought a doll that I really really wanted, but she definitely needs some work. I have decided to do it. What's the worst tat can happen? If I cannot do it (restring and faceup.) I can always find someone who can help, right? :sweat

    3. At the moment, no. I just don't have the skills to do that, yet. I would have to pay someone else to do it, so I don't think it would be worth my time.

    4. I think any doll that needed a bit of TLC that I could buy I'd snap up in an instant, a restoration project could be fun! Although I may have to get friends involved because my skills only go so far :')

    5. Definitely would do it if the doll was really affordable.

    6. For me, if I found a doll who I thought was beautiful, and I had the money there and then, even if it would take a bit of work, I'd definitely get it, in a heart beat. Even if the doll was pretty damaged, I've wanted to do some of my more out there ideas on a doll, and as such I'd rather a damaged, broken doll than a perfect new one - I get pretty emotional about dolls, and I would want them all to go to a loving home. If there was one which I could give a home to, and make into something beautiful, I'd jump at the chance :)

    7. I just now looked at a project journal about restoring a doll. It looks like a lot of work, but I think it would be a fun project. I wouldn't spend a fortune on a project doll though.

    8. Heck yes! I mean, it would depend on what I wanted the doll for and what the damage was, but assuming it was just a sculpt I loved with no set character attached I would do it in a heartbeat. I would love to try my hand at more, like modding or restoring, but I'm terrified of ruining a perfectly good doll, so a cheap project or junk doll would be perfect.

    9. I really enjoy a challenge so if I found a doll I liked that needed some serious restoration then I would purchase the doll and then let it take the time needed.

If the doll was also badly damaged I might see it as a opportunity to customize it while fixing some of the issues to give that doll a chance to look great again.

I think it's always worth a try to restore the dolls. It may take a lot of time, patience and work but in the end I feel it would be worth it all.

    10. I'd do it in a heartbeat for a planned "project doll" if the price was low enough to justify it, but I would not want to restore a grail doll. I'd want that brand new. :)

    11. I would do it if I had the money. Definitely. I love doing mod work on dolls, especially broken or yellowed ones. You could say I get pretty reckless sometimes, but I put a lot of love and care into the work I do. Modifications are probably the main reason I'm so addicted to dolls >3< Finish one, and it's time for the next project, you know? Though none of mine are ever done (they'll be good for a while and then some crazy idea will come along) My grail is Ringdoll Frankenstein, and I'm actually kind of hoping that one will turn up on the MP, damaged and blank so I can do what I like with him.

    12. I definitely think I would, that totally seems like my thing. If I found a doll that I really liked but it had noticeable damage, I can't see why I wouldn't get it because I'm sure the price would be reduced and I could easily take it upon myself to fix it up. I have all the materials to do so on hand (hooray for having creative parents with a basement full of supplies!). Plus I would feel bonded to the doll a lot more I think for restoring them.

    13. Yeah, sure, why not. I've done various repairs on dolls for others in the past, so it would be a fun project to do so for myself if the opportunity arose. The price I bought her at would need to reflect the doll's condition, but I find that YJA does a pretty reasonable job of that.

    14. Humm, I can say YES, as I just finished up 'restoring' a doll that I've always wanted.

    15. Totally agree with this - as a person who likes clay and sculpting, I think this would be a welcome challenge for me as long as the price was low enough (>£60).

    16. I would take on a restoration project for the fun of it.

I wouldn't take on a restoration project in an attempt to get a much-wanted doll for less.

I did something similar in the past (bought a pair of Amber hooves that didn't come with the special fantasy torso or thighs), and it didn't work out well for me. Even though I'd always longed to own Amber hooves, and even though I was incredibly happy with the modding I did, and even though the hooves actually ended up with a better range of motion than the originals... I'm a collector at heart. I ended up buying a second pair of hooves that included the torso and thighs, and now find myself with modded legs I have no use for :|

    17. I tried with one doll I'd really wanted, and after a couple attempts of working on her, I decided I just didn't have the chops for what she needed at the time, and she's since moved on.

    18. Oh, definitely! I love doing faceups and body blushing and mods, so getting a doll I really liked cheaply and being able to put a load of work into it would be fantastic. I agree with what some others have said: restoring a doll like that would make it more meaningful to me than just buying a nice fresh one would.

    19. I DO love a great deal, and I don't mind doing those sorts of modifications to make the doll look its best. If I found a totally broken-down, yellowed Dollshe Bermann for under $700, I'd get it. But that's really the only doll I'd jump at in that situation, 'cause I'd only want to spend the time restoring a doll that I'm going to LOVE, as even great deals on damaged dolls can add up, and I need all the money I can get for my other dolls! (I might restore a rare or discontinued doll though, now that I think about it. I'd fix it up and give it a faceup and body blush, the works, and sell it with specific wig(s) and eyes and some cool outfit like as a custom 'fullset' maybe. Eh. I dunno. Maybe someday, when I'm not completely broke.

    20. Noooo no no no. I know myself. I'd get aggrivated and irritated and nothing will come from it other than me wasting the money I spent on a broken doll. I admire the work of those that tackle such projects, but is is not something for me.
