If you had not started collecting BJD would you still be a doll collector?

May 11, 2024

    1. If I had not collected BJD, I would still collect dolls however the cost of one BJD doll could have gotten me several other dolls So my collection might actually be bigger than what it is now since I would have more funds to spend on other dolls.

    2. I would still be a collector because I was one long before modern BJD were a thing. I discovered BJD right when Barbie grew stale for me, but I was still a collector of OT toys of all kinds, even then. In the earlier years of me discovering these dolls, I was fascinated by the customization aspects. I found myselfwanting to customize a lot of my other toys, thanks to me learning about BJD. However, I was always a toy collector, and I'll always be one. Dolls in particular are special to me, but I love hoarding collecting most kinds of toys. Until I kick the bucket. No more resin BJD for me though...(:

    3. Absolutely! I'd probably own a big MH collection instead of limiting it to 10 bjd :XD:

    4. same goes for me lol :D Instead of a "collection" (whose number is to be permanent) of 6 SDs taking two shelves, I'd have the same two shelves filled with Barbies ;) As for now, I only have 6 Barbies too... The BJDs are my priority any time though <3

    5. Not really. I've tried to collect playline dolls and they just do not click the same way as bjd do. I really enjoy My Little Ponies and have considered collecting gen 3, but since I'm not really interested in customizing them, I don't see it being a long-lasting interest either. If I'd never been a bjd collector, I don't think I'd really be able to find a collector's hobby that I was as passionate about as this one.

    6. No. I've never been interested in dolls prior to resin BJDs, and now I'm still not interested in other types of dolls or figurines. If I didn't have BJDs I'd be doing a lot more illustration and digital art, still playing video games, and saving money a lot faster. On the other hand, my second language (Chinese) will continue to languish in disuse, and I'd never have learned how to sew clothes or use a DSLR camera.

    7. I might have bought one or two but there would be no collecting. I only have a minor interest in dolls that aren't BJD and I may have never looked at them if not for my interest in BJD.

    8. Honestly, probably not  Maybe stuffed toys like teddy bears, but I can’t imagine a point where I’d get into collecting dolls if I hadn’t found out about bjds!

    9. I don't think so. I was unhappy with 6" figures and model kits in every way.

    10. I probably would have continued to collect Pullips, when my bjd collection is "done" I might go back to collecting them :)

    11. I collect several types of dolls so yes I would but as I already have completed my collections I would not buy except rarely also I treat my dolls as decorative items the whole pose and take pics was more a thing I learned from bjd community so I doubt I'd ever do that if I haven't bought any bjd.

    12. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't collect dolls if I didn't collect bjds (or dolls that are OT in here but still qualify as bjds or mjds). I just have no interest in playline or figurines and the few blind box bjds I had went to new homes pretty quickly, too. There are a couple of interests that grew from bjds for me but not the other way around, really.

    13. I also collect some playline dolls (and customize them) so I was into collecting other types of dolls before I was able to acquire BJDs. I would probably still be collecting them, because I already am collecting both haha. Although for the moment my brain is very much zeroed in on the BJDs

    14. I'd honestly probably end up collecting blind box figures instead of dolls, if I didn't collect BJDs :sweat

    15. I started off collecting porcelain dolls and MH dolls, so I'd probably still be doing that :)

    16. I got interested in BJDs via anime figures and stumbling across Dollfies as a result, so if I wasn't into BJDs, I'd probably have kept pursuing that more (although I'm happy with the figures I have currently and don't feel much need to have more). BJDs were also a vehicle for me to learn sewing, so I might potentially have focused more on sewing plushies or maybe for Barbies. But I'm not super into dolls as a whole (I like them but not to the extent that I feel a need to own them), so I don't think I'd be a doll collector specifically.

    17. I inherited part of my grandmother's doll collection when she died, so I would still have that collection. I don't think I would add to it though (I did in the past, but found I wasn't really passionate about it).

Probably I would have stuck to digital dolls instead, and would have gotten more into making dress-up games. :)

    18. Nope!
BJDs interested me for other reasons than them being dolls. I loved the customization options and the idea of using them as detailed photo models of my OCs.
I tried other dolls after I started with them, but it never really clicked with those (except for Blythe, but even there my collection is finished).

If I had not started BJDs, I would have instead kept focusing on drawing. Tbh I kinda regret going for the dolls, I know I would be happier nowadays being able to draw bombass pictures of my OCs

    19. I started collecting vintage play dolls to replace childhood things and have several different types, I have always been a doll collector. BJD are my focus now but I still look for OT grail. I am interested in other things that are not dolls but I don’t collect them.

    20. I think that you could be a doll collector even with dressup cutting dolls games, even drawings designs games dolls but BJD are the top of the top dolls for me. I have blythes, mjds, barbies, liccas...blind boxes, of course, but nothing like bjds. For years you could be off but true love always remains
