Imperfect dolls being 'perfect'?

Jun 14, 2014

    1. If there is anything on my dolls I don't like, I try to do something about it (sanding seamlines, removing eccess resin, boiling out dents, sanding scratches away, even replacing parts) If the imperfectness is still there, lessend or not, but I tried to erase it on my own, I'll accept it as part of the doll. If it's gone, I'm happy too.
Being put out by the doll because of it, not happened yet, and I don't think it will happen ever.
The definition of that imeprfectness can change from doll to doll, and from time to time, depending on my mood^^

    2. My first doll DOD Shall came to me with two (joined) broken fingers that her previous owner/s fixed back up so carefully that I love her all the more for it. That and the various little dents and whatnot around the joint rims from use show me that she has been well-loved and played with.

She is also on the old body which is precious to me as a sort of artefact from back when ball-jointed dolls were simple before we starting having those complex and perfectly-engineered bodies, and also because it was this simple single-jointed body with minimal details (which was to me doll-like, and that was all a doll needed) and the Shall sculpt itself that intrigued me all those years ago when I first became enthralled by BJDs.

And lastly when I first got her, I could tell she was very yellowed because I knew what new resin should be like, and was really bogged down by that. But then the possibility came up that I would sell her and replace her with a Shall in better condition. It was something I was prepared to go out of my way to do, and then when this opportunity arose, I felt a pang of... something. I realised I wanted to keep this Shall and that her mellow creamy coloured skin was beautiful, and that she was perfect just as she was.

    3. I think imperfections make a doll more realistic. My Ayumi (Shang Nai AOD) has a weird light-grey colored line on her nose.(I don´t know where she got it from and it doesn´t get off.) Sometimes it bothers me but I love her so much that this little imperfection doesn´t matter. :XD:

    4. Imperfection makes the doll more unique and one of it's kind!
They all cast in the same mold the only different is the face up, the little things
of imperfection made the doll, my very own one of it's kind, my doll!

    5. This is very true! :) Thank you all for your lovely stories!

    6. My lovely Dollzone Megi came to me with some strange little issues. Being my second doll ever, and my first previously owned, i didn't know what to expect. It isn't a horror story inane way, but he has some blue staining on some of his fingernails like they had been painted at some point. The blue is down in the tiniest crevices at the quick of the nail, where no tool can get to. I might be able to soak it in something, but it really isn't that important. One head that came with him was thickly painted and hideously modded, even removing as much paint as possible to redo unearthed the modded thin-resin eyes of doom. But it's ok, because I have a project to practice additive/ closing eyes/ romantic eyes modding. We shall see!

His magi sculpt had a small scratch on his right eye, so I painted it into a scar. Love him more. I'm not afraid to work on him because he's not perfect. I enjoy it more because of it.

    7. My second doll was a pre-owned ResinSoul Mei. Her owner was selling her for cheap because of cosmetic damage and not playing with her.
When I bought her, the poor baby was a mess.
Nothing broken, but it seemed like she had yellowed very badly and had some sort of weird "dirt stains" covering her entire body.
Her face up looked like it was sharpied on and her strings had no elastic anymore. She was my project.

After hours of talking to my other doll buddies and getting cleaning tips; I was able to remove a good chunk of the stains.
And after a fresh face up; she looked so relived. She is my baby and I feel like, since I put so much time into her she really was perfect.
Her "imperfections" turned out to be a bonding experience. ^^

    8. catw07 really good stories!!

i think my dolls are all 'perfect'. well they have seams of course, I don't dare to sand it. no art is perfect, so i thought that and all my dolls have those seams. feels like it was a masterpiece handicraft of menswork.

    9. My Resinsoul Mu came to me with a decent chunk of his ankle broken off but it didn't mess with his foot's functionality. I was worried that the break would ruin him for me but I just thought outside the box a bit and covered the area with furry leg warmers. With them I forget about the break plus the furryness fits his hoof legs and his character, so win-win! His imperfection made him perfect <3

    10. So far, I have always tried to fix any imperfections. The way I see it is, if I got the doll to shell a character, I need the doll to not be damaged in the way the character isn't. If I got the doll with no plans for the character, then the imperfections would probably be fine and worked into the character. So as it is for me now, imperfections not matching up with the characters would not be "perfect".

    11. I was slightly disappointed with the imperfections in my two bjds, mostly about their stringing quality and later their posing as well. With time, the posing took over and it was although not the main, but one of the reasons I decided to part with the dolls.

    12. Imperfections can bother me, like Miu Len said, if it's not part of their characters, it can be difficult to work with. One of my dolls got a chipped ear (he has elf ears) during shipping due to poor packaging by the company, and it was frustrating more than anything. Thankfully they sent me a new faceplate. Seams and marbling in grey/tan resin don't bother me, mainly just damaged faceups and broken pieces.

    13. My doll doesnt have very many imperfections, other than a few chips here and there from my own fault, and a scratched spot where the company sanded the seams not so well, but I do remember seeing a doll on ebay that i almost fell in love with not because of the sculpt, but because it had two left feet due to a company error. The imperfection made me like the doll even more. Does that sound strange?

    14. Always look for the most unpretty heads when i come to choose dolls. - true story lol. not creepy just i just dont like the doll to look pretty i like them to have a big nose ...wierd shaped mouth and eyes maybe a strong jaw ...i dont know lol.

    15. I have an "accidental" doll--she came with a lot of clothes, and I didn't realize I was buying her. She has some terrible body staining, and I love her all the same, because she's got character.

    16. My girl Aria, as seen in my avatar, has a small chip in her faceup, but it looks kinda cute and my boyfriend suggested I paint on a beauty mark over it because that's what it makes him think of. I think I may try that. :)

    17. My two Delfs definitely fit into this category... the first one came with modded ears that, while repaired, weren't a 100% fix (the remaining apoxie's hidden by his wig, however), and a roughly done mobility mod that required some creative aesthetics to cover up, as well as some uneven yellowing (which has been mostly repaired) and staining (which has been hidden with blushing). There's quite the laundry list of things that were wrong with him... but I absolutely adore him. My second one's off to have his head repaired now, and while his body's in good shape (just a bit dirty), his head needs an ear repair and an eye mod, and he'll never be "perfect," just like the first one, but even before his repairs I've been absolutely smitten with him, as well.

    18. I dyed my first boy into tan/brown few years ago and I didn't like the result so I?sand the color off, but of course a lot of detail places still has color and accidentally sand off his upper lips. he's pretty much "different" than before but I feel so much more inspire by his "imperfectness" :p

    19. My second doll (bobobie/ resin soul Chun) had been through a lot by the time I bought her. I think i was her third or fourth owner by then.
The body she came with was a much older one, which i knew it was when i bought her, so posing and such wasn't easy. She also had staining on her face from various faceups done by many people.
After a year of just keeping her on a shelf, i decided to invest some time, effort and of course, money into her.
First i got her a new body, which has helped us bond even more. I also got her a new wig and found a style that works with her and her personality... It took us three years but we made it. Now she's getting a faceup by a brilliant artist who has managed to use her facial staining within the faceup itself.
I can't wait to see her.
I believe that because of all the flaws she came with, i was able to truly connect with her. It really helped convince me that i could never sell or reshell any of my dolls, no matter how tempted i am by other sculpts. :D

    20. I find that I appreciate the imperfections of almost all the items I own. Their imperfections make them special, just like people!
