1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Iplehouse EID and SID Discussion Part 16

Jan 22, 2015

1. Please help me out here (I am relatively new to collecting dolls with unpainted eyes): Eyeco offers Poly Glass, Platinum Glass, and Ultra (among others). I like the iris sizes and would love to order a few for my Iples as my funds permit, but I don't want to get eyes that may yellow over time. Do any of these three types offered by Eyeco yellow over time? I would think that if the Poly Glass eyes are acrylic, they would be susceptible to yellowing. As far as Platinum Glass and Ultra, unless I am mistaken (wouldn't be the first time) they are made of silicon, and apparently prone to yellowing also.

So, short of ordering glass eyes (which it seems Eyeco doesn't carry) do you have any suggestions as to where to purchase eyes with smaller irises that might not yellow over time? I really love how the Eyeco irises look (as far as the size and complexity of hues) and would love to find another company that can offer similar eyes, even if they are glass.

Thanks!!

2. Dusk I haven't had any of mine yellow much over several years (I get them from Safrin doll, so they are whatever type Safrin carries), and they are the best if you need a large white and a small iris--I haven't seen any other company that has quite that balance of white to eye-- and it helps with those hard-to fit eyeholes. I think as long as they don't live in a hot environment they should be fine.

3. I use eyecos - the one's you want are 'soft glass' (silicone) - the "Ultra", "Platinum Glass" and "Fantasy" lines. I also get them from safrindoll, although she's pretty much out of 11 and 13mm right now as she's waiting on an order from them and it's unusually late, according to her website.

Alternatively, you can look at Masterpiece eyes - they are also silicone and the range of sizes and colours is larger but they still have the large white-small iris thing. But they're more expensive and pre-order.

4. Anyone want some patterns and tutorials for sweatshirts for SID boys and SID girs and nYID boys? I finally got my scanner working and was thinking of making a tutorial to go along with the crappily made patterns.

• x 1
5. If you put them up with a link I'd love one for an SID girl--even a rough pattern is a big help!

6. Okay I'll post a link when I'm done making the tutorial. The tutorial I'm using an SID boy pattern but it works the same for both sweatshirt sizes, but I'll link a scan of the SID girl pattern as well.

7. @Dusk: Soom also makes small iris/small pupil silicone eyes. I prefer single dome; the double dome eyes reflect light differently to the point where a doll can look cross eyed in photos. Safrindoll carries Soom eyes, but some of their photos are terrible quality so it's hard to get a sense of the color. There is a one-cent difference in price between the two sites, so it's not like you are getting huge savings buying from Safrindoll.

Soom's site does warn that the silicone can yellow if exposed to the sun. The silicone eyes can also stain from colored putty. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it's better to know the potential drawbacks before placing an order.

8. I ordered a bunch of Soom silicone eyes when they were on special last year and they were a little disappointing. Their Night series were the ones I really wanted but the quality was really appalling. I'm not sure if it's because of the influx of orders they had during their sale, but since the insides were printed on paper, you can make out the grain of the paper. And in some, the ink of the pupils would blend with the irises.
The 14mm were useable, but the 12mm were wonky (I only ordered 2 pairs but both had one eye whose pupil was off-center). I find their Eclipse series very nice though as the lines give off a nice effect. Those are basically the only ones that I use from them. After that, I learned not to order eyes with paper for their irises.

The irises from Soom aren't big, but they're not small either. The 12mm have 7mm pupils while the 14mm are 7.5mm~8mm, I believe.
You can tell if you compare the Sooms with the urethane eyes I ordered from Green Pavillion which were customized to be 14mm/7mm.

So...my eye of choice is glass. I ordered a bunch of customized glass eyes in a GO and they turned out really well. I opted for 14mm/7mm and they sit well with everyone. All my Iplehouse guys and Soom guys now wear them.

Below is a comparison between 14mm/7mm and normal 12mm eyes from Alice's Collections (on Tabao they're called BJD Full House)

9. In case anyone is interested heres some patterns to make your SID boys/girls and nYID boys some sweatshirts or long sleeve shirts. I'm linking the tutorial as well because my patterns are crap and they need a tutorial to be explained. Anyway this is what the sweatshirts end up looking like on a doll, and since I used the SID man pattern in the tutorial, here's Alex modeling a grey hoodie without pockets for y'all :D

10. Oh thank you Artisticadelle ! I have to try that on my boys ! :D

11. Wow, you are a genius! I'll remember that for next time -- wish I'd seen the suggestion before I spent ages paging through everything! :doh

Shane is gorgeous ^__^ And no problem, just figured that doll eyes are confusing enough as it is! ;)

There's a fairly exhaustive thread on finding eyes with smaller, realistic irises here, which contains probably WAY more information about eyes than you ever wanted, heh.

I honestly haven't noticed much yellowing in the acrylic eyes I have -- and some of mine go back to 2005. However, I don't like the way that acrylic reflects light (not very realistic), and I find that acrylic eyes generally tend to lack the depth and "spark" of urethane or glass eyes, and they don't have the realism of (some) silicone eyes.

You can get glass eyes with small irises (I own a pair of these), but other than that, glass eyes tend not to be a good fit for these smaller eyewell/iris sizes (in general, the iris is too big, unless you're specifically ordering small-iris eyes.)

Urethane eyes are my go-to (12mm Mako and 12mm Enchanted Doll), because I find that the iris size is realistic and I like the way they fit in the eyewells, and they pick up plenty of light for photography.

Some urethane eyes do yellow slightly over time, but I find that it's barely noticeable, and honestly still looks realistic (human sclera aren't bright-white, they have grey and yellow undertones.) I've never stopped using a pair of eyes because of yellowing, and I'm honestly struggling to think of any of my urethane eyes that have yellowed at all.

I've seen people selling yellowed urethane eyes (again, it's more of an ivory color than jaundice-yellow), but I don't know if they were exposed to heat and sunlight, or what conditions they were kept in. My dolls see a reasonable amount of indirect light, and I take them out for photography frequently -- they're on display, not kept in boxes. If yellowing urethane eyes was a major issue, at least for the brands I buy, I'd think I would have noticed it by now.

Here's the same pair of Drop Rops urethanes, in 2009 and 2014 -- as you can see, the whites are still very white. (The green color of the iris is the same, too -- it looks slightly more chartreuse in the second photo, because it's direct sunlight vs. indirect sunlight in the first pic.)

I always advise using white eye putty, just in case. Some people use Blu-Tack, but it's been known to stain. (I use white unbaked Sculpey, although I know it can eat some types of acrylic eyes -- never had a problem with glass, urethane, or silicone eyes with it.)

How did you order the Green Pavilion and Sixth Room eyes? Through a shopping service, or do they have an online shopping cart? (I know you said it was a group order, but I didn't know if it was done through Taobao or something else.) They look great!

-- A (seriously, I apparently love to talk about doll eyes. Oops?)

12. And you guys call yourselves lazy about looking through stuff lol you need to learn the 'real' art of lazy... if there is a short cut to be found... I'll eventually find it lol.

oh pretty O_O... I wish my girls could wear tats... but it just would not do for 'proper ladies of good breeding'... in the 1800's ... It's part of why Bliss's tat isn't inked in lol. But some of my guys might be able too later ;p

I also adore that shade of read hair :XD:

13. Whoa Yasmin! :o

14. No problem! I've got more tutorials and stuff planned because I know how hard it is to clothe these boys, and girls, and just Iples in general.

And to everyone else, I mentioned in this thread (I think it was this one O.o) about making small weathered books and maps (someone was trying to print out Bliss's maps from the Carved Heritage sale and I said something about a tutorial and someone asked for pics??? I can't keep track with all these threads and no sleep lol) and a tutorial for those. Working on the tutorial for the books but here's a photo of one of the maps I made, it's for my fantasy world so please don't use it or any of the names. The top is says "Lumirascura" but the freaking quil I was using dropped a giant splotch of ink RIGHT on the U. Why you gotta be like that quil, why.

15. Thank you, they do look rather nice don't they?
For both of them, I stumbled across a ruten page listing their GOs. (ruten is the Taiwanese alternative to ebay).
The GO leaders saw the listings on Taobao so they decided to host the GO catering to Taiwanese buyers.

Green Pavilion periodically do order periods. I believe it is opened right now.
http://gedoll.taobao.com/?spm=2013.1.1000126.2.O4h7TK
They have 3 types of eyes BX, BY and TY and (If I remember correctly, they allow you full customization of the eyes, eg. you can add a silver pellet instead of the normal black pupil)
BX - this is the type I got.
BY - these I don't recommend coz they have an extra line around the iris that makes them look larger. Defeats the purpose of picking small irises in the first place.
TY - these look very similar to Oscardoll eyes. This line doesn't have the small iris choice because if you want a flower or a crystal in there, they'll need the space.

In their fine print, they say then can only crank out 40 pairs of eyes each month. I was in a GO and I had to wait 3 months for them.

Sixth Room's listing is here:
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.126.ivXaOb&id=1477875412&ns=1&abbucket=2#detail
It seems to be still open.
If you scroll down the different types of eyes can be seen.

Here's a trick. If you go on Taobao and past these three words in
小虹膜
(small iris) it will give you exclusive small iris listings on Taobao.

EDIT: For Sixth Room, the GO I joined needed 30 pairs of normal eyes and 30 pairs of small iris eyes to enjoy their discount. (so altogether, 60 pairs) I also waited 3 months for these.

16. A little info that I got from Iplehouse!

17. Uh-oh ... ladies are always trouble, I already have so many and it's so much harder finding guy sculpts ... more along the lines of Edan would be good / bad (depending on whether you ask me or my wallet) :sweat

artisticadelle, what a cool map! I saw your book tutorials on dA too, very nice :) I used to "age up" paper with tea/coffee, but never whole pre-made books ... I might need to try that now that I'm doing fantasy dolls after all :D

18. didn't they promise a JID boy? O_o... It won't affect me personally but still... but the girls >< ugh... And me 'needing' a SID and if nothing else an nYID body when I can't afford one yet! ><:pout:

19. I could have sworn the first one was going to be a JID boy also... and ugh... more girls! I'm gonna be in trouble XD Lets hope none of them are worth adding to my list... although if there are any that I like better than someone else on my list, I'm sure they will probably get put on it x.x I am more worried about the clothes. LOL!
