1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Is BJD really just for adults? And adults, what do you think of kids who like them?

Aug 17, 2006

    1. I think that BJDs are only for people mature enough to handle them. Some teenagers aren't at that level of maturity, while others are.

I definitely think that they are for ages 13 and up. Even though some 11 and 12 year olds are also very responsible, I think that it really is best for only teenagers and adults to have access to something this delicate.

    2. Personally, I think that BJDs are for anyone who is mature enough to know exactly how you should handle them. So a six year old girl, should could have a BJD if she knew how to properly take care of it. I guess you can almost say they are like a pet in some ways....I believe that almost anyone can surely handle them, but it really does matter on the person's maturity level...
I am not a adult, I am only 16, this hobby is ALMOST a all ages hobby. It just varies with the person.

    3. Kids can like them and be in awe with them. But I think only an adult can truly appreciate the work money and time involved in 1 doll.

    4. I'm 16 (17 in less than two weeks), and I've also been thinking about this... Unfortunately I don't have any dolls yet, but I'm waiting patiently for DZ Hid and Megi (I will order them in a grouporder at the end of February)^w^

    5. I think BJDs are for anyone who can afford to pay for them and have an interest in them. Of course, if you follow my criteria, you'll exclude some current owners as well as include some kids. Owning a BJD has more to do with disposable income than responsibility, unlike a pet, and people get pets for their kids all the time. I'd rather see a banged-up Volks hanging off a 13yo's arm than a terrified Chihuahua.

As for the appreciation argument, it's simple. Make a kid earn the money for the doll--even just half of it--and I'm sure s/he will have a much better appreciation for the value of the doll and money in general than if you paid for it in full.

    6. I'm making my own money^^ One of the reasons is that I have to buy my own clothes and everything else i want :3 At the moment, I have two jobs (but I'll stop with the one on sundays soon). I also draw a lot, and sometimes I sell drawings^^

Etio: I hate it when kids that are not mature enough run around with terrified pets D: It's a living animal, not a toy! We had a dog (a husky) from I was born until he died when I was 8. I learned to respect dogs because of him. But I didn't own him, he belonged to the my family :)

    7. I'm only 13 and am starting my very own mod....and i'm liking it but I need epoxy which should come in a few days! :D Well i'm turning 14 soon....but still not an adult! :XD: I don't have any plans on being one any soon....but I think BJD is for everybody...it doesn't matter if what size, shape, color, age,or species....well except for the species part....I wouldn't let a tiger or ape handle a SD13 Mimi or anything! LOL!

    8. Well, I think it all depends on the individual interested in the dolls. People realize with the price and quality of these dolls, they are no child's toy.
I think the interest in BJDs could mature from girls who used to play with dolls as children, such as with myself. Just a few years ago I was playing with American Girl Dolls.

I definitely worry about people who don't take their dolls seriously enough, but I'm sure that anyone who cares about their doll treats them well. Plus, kids who get these dolls could not simply pay for them themselves, or get something from Korea without being asked what it is. Parents decide if they think the child is responsible enough for a doll like these.

Oh, about myself, I just turned 15 this month... :D And I have one BJD, her name is Alice and I treat her just as well as I treat myself!

    9. OH MY GOSH WE SHOULD BE FRIENDS IM 14 TURNING 15 SOON BUT I THOUGHT THAT I WAS THE YOUNGEST ONE BUT NOW I HAVE A BUDDY MY AGE YAAAAYYY!!!

    10. hey if you got the money, are responsible enough not to trash the expensive as heck doll, know what your getting into, go ahead no matter what age you are...besides...theres always super glue ducktape and paint XD

    11. bluemuse: I disagree with you (for obvious reasons- me being 16), age doesn't have a thing to do with appreciating what a work of art a bjd is.

    12. Just so you know, there are lots of young people on this board. I'm younger than you, and I saw a 10 year old on here once.

    13. I think if my daughters wanted them, I'd be okay with it, as long as they buy their own, or Santa brings them! LOL

    14. I disagree. I'm 13 and I can appreciate the work, money, and time involved in one doll. That's why I buy them, because of how much goes into one. I also think that age has nothing to do with appreciating artwork. My 10 year old cousin and I can appreciate my dolls just as much as any adult would.

    15. i think it's a case by case thing :sweat geese i'm only 20 and i'm giveing my 2 cents i feel old:aeyepop: anyways when i was 12 my mom would pull out her dolls for me to 'play' with. i knew how to treat them and i enjoyed it. now they were porcelein. and it's the same thing as a resin bjd, but the concepts the same. if a 'child' can understand how valuable and delicate they are, and have shown a true dedication to them. then i would think it's fine. the ones that can take care of them shouldn't be punished just because others their age won't do the same....
now that made me sound old:(...

    16. I'm seventeen, I got my first doll at sixteen. My friends thought I was crazy .
I don't think age really matters. I think it's maturity level, really. I think it's great when younger kids are into them! I don't think it's weird at all. When I have kids, I can't wait to either pass down some of my (so far very small!) collection, or encourage them/help them buy their own!

    17. Well, define 'kid'. o.o I got my first one when I was 14 (just a year ago, haha) but I'm mature enough. I wouldn't put one in the hands of a 8 year old though.

    18. Im only 14 and im currently waiting for my homme ducan to arrive,
i saved up for this myself,
i belive if you truely know you want a doll, they are for everyone!
      XD

    19. I think part of what's so nice about this hobby is how it appeals to such a wide variety of people. I think it's okay for people my age, 14-ish, all the way up to people way in their later years to like dolls.

Obviously you have to be somewhat mature to be able to take care of your doll and it's face-up and such, and so that's why some people may think this hobby is more of an adult hobby. But if you're young and capable, then I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to have this as a hobby.

    20. I'm sure if more kids had more money (or rich parents), more would be participating in the hobby, like many have said already XD
My little sister for instance is 13 and is dieing for a doll of her own! (I was going to get her one for Christmas.. but she wants a bass guitar slightly more)
