Is BJD really just for adults? And adults, what do you think of kids who like them?

Aug 17, 2006

    1. Well I have to say I woudnt, my daughter got her 1st doll at 13, she saved half for it which took a while and I paid the rest for her 13th Birthday and she got a Sharmin.. she is now coming on 17 and has 6 dolls or is it 7 lol and I have to say no one has ever said anything to her at meets or called her a spoilt brat, so hun I really dont think anyone would. Chaz enjoyed going to meets and seeing all the other dolls, tho would say I was always around, so would agree dont go to a meet on your own, take a friend and let your mum know.

I also got my niece her 1st one at 13 as well, also a Kid Delf Ani elf girl and no one has ever said anything to her either :)

    2. I am 15 (16 in april) and i am slowly saving up for my 1st doll (delf El or a KDF bory) i got into this hobby when i was about 13-14. I asked my mom for one and she said no If i want it that bad i need to save up and buy it so thats exactly what i am doing. ( current amount saved $23/$270)

my mom said she might take me back out to L.A to get a FCS Volks for my Sweet 16. I am not getting my hopes up. I prefer an Delf El. ( she said it would be the only time she would spend alot of money on my B-Day gift or party)

    3. Well, sometimes even "adults" can be horrible and very childish persons ^^'
So, in my opinion, it's not important how old a person is, it's important how old the person behaves :)

    4. that was well said

I'm 15 and going to be 16 in june... I first learned of BJD about a year or two ago and I've loved them ever since.

I've been saving up for quite a while (I got sidetracked by some lolita clothes) but I plan on getting my first doll after late march (hopefully my unused guitar will be sold by then or my artwork will be bought at the artshow I'm gonna be in).... yeah it's an expensive hobby but I believe if one truly loves their hobby then how old they are or who they are or any of that shouldn't matter... because really it's all about loving the dolls... regardless of age.... if you like BJDs you Like BJDs

but I could see how BJDs can be considered an adult hobby.... I know that it would be impossible for me to get a job at the moment to fund having a collection of BJDs I mean... as a kid.... I just became old enough to get a workers permit..... barely old enough to star learning to drive.... I have high school which takes up most of my time.... and also most adults would argue that adults need money to survive and that teens don't (which most of the time... or at least in my case, is true) so that leaves most jobs out of the question for me..... so I babysit, which if I didn't spend it all on quesdillas after school when I forget my lunch.... might buy me a cheaper doll after, say, 4 to 5 months

well I guess some younger kids ask or borrow money fromm their parents but I hate doing that... so my basic idea is that... well it's harder for younger people to get the money to support the hobbey and that's why BJDs are mostly thought of as being only for adults....... but hey.... that's just my opinion

    5. I dont really think BJDs are just for adults, ive seen quite a few doll owners that are under 16. I myself am only 13 ;D so i dont think its a "adult" hobby.

Im ordering my first doll hopefully by spring, and he is QUITE expensive *_* hes at least going to be 900 dollars with shipping and all, its not technicaly MY money but my parents do give me a share of the tax returns (i tell my friends that and they think "omg lucky" XDD) so im kinda paying a good half |D

Now about the anatomy thing.. in my case my parents are quite open with me, and my mom thinks im very mature for my age so seeing certain things on a doll isnt a big deal. anyway, my parents understand that it IS just a doll and its not like im going to be doing anything to it XD But in MY opinion, i think the anatomy issue might be a problem for some "kids" but that also depends on their personality and what their parents think..

And lastly, i think that some people under 15 might brake or damage a doll, but again that depends on if they're mature/respectful of things or not. Ive known people my age that act like absolute 6 year olds and they're crazy hyper, it...it actually scares me to picture them with a BJD :shudder: the worst thing they'd do i think is start swing the poor doll around by its feet or something X_X so...thats the only thing i think that would make BJD a "adult" hobby.. but it really does depend on the person..

      :)

      /end rant

    6. Im 16 and currently saving up for some more dollies (: Your not the only young one i guess
      hehe^^

    7. Ooh, it's a hobby that's totally for everyone. I mean, come on, some of us collected Barbies and other dolls when we were young kids. BJDs are just more expensive, that's all. They can still be played with and dressed up. Just price differences. That, and Ken doesn't have ANYTHING down there ._.; [s'kay, i still <3 u Ken]

But, I got my first doll at 16, and I'm actually going to be an adult next month [18 yrs old~ WOOT! i can buy Yaoi nao w/ no problems >D ]. Age shouldn't matter. It just teaches us children [kuz i can still say that] how to earn and save money, even if it is just for a hobby.

and Fangirll4life, I don't mean to single you out or anything [i mean, your post is right there, that's all], but you mentioned people that act like 6 year olds. I kinda took a very slight offense from that. My friends and I act like total kids [we're high w/o the drugs], but that doesn't mean we aren't mature when we need to be. My dolls are indeed taken care of, and I know better than to take them out when I know I'll be acting like a jackass. [/end rant]

    8. *agrees with faerieharp* Nope! 8D

Fangirl4life, I'm real close to your age and I have to pay for every doll myself (I have 2 SDF $630 each and on layway I have a DF for $650). ^^ Except Alice she was a Christmas present, but I still had to pay half. Other than that, no help from mommy. I love my dolls and know how to take care of them. And them being anatomically correct doesn't bother me at all.

    9. I think that as long as whoever at whatever age fully understands their monetary value and how to handle them, then as long as their parents or they themselves have the means to collect and enjoy them then more power to them.

    10. Well said! And true in almost ALL things.

It depends on the kid. Some kids aren't yet mature enough to be responsible for something so expensive, IMO. Some adults aren't, either, only the adults aren't likely to get much more mature - children probably will.

    11. I agree with just about everyone else on the thread :)
If you can love your doll, and take care of them, then age is just a number.
I'm 14, and will be 15 in two weeks. I was definetly the youngest one at our meet, but its good to know that there are plenty of other young collectors out there :)

    12. I don't think it's the age, it's more of the maturity of the person. Of course it'd be silly to give it to someone who might not yet be conscious of its beauty and value (and I don't mean the money). As long as a person can comprehend that it's not just another vinyl plastic doll you can leave lying around when you're done with it, then why not? :)

This is more of a hobby, afterall, and not just "playing with toys" :)

    13. I think that bjd's are mostly for adults, 'cos of their prise and delicacy. They're not created for daily and hourly squeesing, changing clothes, bathing, playing doctor or anything lelse like this. Dolls for kids should be more "environment" resistant.

    14. I LOVE kids with dolls.
I know this is about teen agers.. but i know a lot of 13-+ y/o's with bjds~

~ The dollmore boxes say that bjd's are for 5 years and up.

And I must say -10 year olds are in love with my dolls XB
And i never had any -10 year old handle my dolls in a bad way. [even better then most adults.. D:]

I even had a girl fall asleep hugging my Zaoll :'D ..cuttuusswt thing ever.
[tho this girl is.. 4.. and she is..strange LOL.. almost like my blond narsha she just.. stares at you a lot and doesn't say anything..observes.. i guess]

I won't buy young kids bjd's. Because it is indeed not a toy.
I think it depends a lot on how the kids/teenager in question is.

I know my steph niece is 9 doesn't play with her barbies..but just designs clothing for them. She is the sort of kid i would give a BJD or something close to it.
For now i have decided to keep them away from her .. afraid she will pick up on this hobby and ask for a very expensive doll from her parents LOL.

Maybe i should buy her a pretty obitsu?

    15. My personal opinion is that if you are mature enough and respectful enough to care for the doll and look after it's things (clothes, wigs, whatever) then you're not too young. Hey if you can talk your parents into buying one for you (or save up, even better) lucky you! :)

    16. I'm going to be 18 in April, but I've had my boys since I was roughly 14-15.
I think teens is a okay time for dolls like these guys because they're so expensive you have to be able to appreciate and take care of the doll. It's all a matter of how mature you are about it.

My 7 year old niece loves my dolls, but she's a messy child and I don't want to leave my boys with her. (Considering there's a 90% chance I'd get them back with playdow in their hair)

And I think part of the reason why it's an adult hobby is due to the fact they're so expensive, that only an adult with money would normally be able to afford them and they're clothes and everything.

I love my dolls, but they are not a cheap hobby. :P

    17. BJDs are for everyone. ^^ So long as your happy and you don't make anyone unhappy around you... it's a hobby that can give you fulfillment... then it's ok.

I think that if you really love what you have, in this case -- your doll, whether you are young or old, you will take care of them.

    18. I think if you love the doll or dolls, than AWESOME! Why should their be an age restriction keeping you away from them! I mean it may be harder to save up from them at a younger age, but still. you get to bond with them and have so much more time. :)

    19. Thanks! I saved up for a while and used some of my savings to pay for him. My parents payed for the other half as a Christmas present.

Humm, I think it'll be a while until I go to a meet...

    20. I don't think that its and Adult only hobby, My niece collects and she is 10. ^^. I am 19. The issue i have with younger people at meets is that they touch and play without asking, Which, Yes, bothers me due to the fact i spent my hard earned money on my doll, and if it were to get broken, hurt, damaged in anyway, i would be heartbroken. :/ My niece may be 10, and own two full SD dolls of her own. But she acts like a 18 year old, shes so mature for her age, and she asks nicely if she wishes to view/touch or hold a doll.

^^; sorta my input.. If you dont want something done too your own doll, don't do it too someone elses..
