Is having a doll without a faceup normal?

Oct 20, 2010

    1. in my personal opinion they look less real without make up, but that of course depends on the tastes and preferences of the owner just like everything else. i had thought however of buying a head in the future to practice doing make up with it :)

    2. hmmm to me buying dolls is not just about
collecting .. it bother me seeing doll owners
with so many dolls but no face ups or care

dunno ... it could jsut be me >.<

    3. my carly has no face, admittedly she's a DD which tend to have a unique face to anyway regardless of makeup but i like her plain face, i planned on doing it sometime but its on my long list of things to do.

    4. I have a doll without a face up now. I like the sculpt so much I want to leave her blank, or if I do get her a face up it will be only minimal blushing to highlight the contours of her face.

    5. Unless it's for a specific character that's supposed to be featureless, dolls should have some sort of faceup, in my opinion. Especially since dolls typically don't have sculpted eyebrows, without any sort of facial definition it can really throw the doll way into the uncanny valley and look seriously... Off. I've had dolls sitting around without faces for some time and unless their brow ridge is covered, even I get a bit weirded out. I feel I need at least eyebrows (for a humanoid doll) for it to not look too terribly off to me.

That said, if that's actually the look you want to pull off, go for it. I actually own a doll whose sculpt is basically featureless, albeit an anthro. Not even a sculpted mouth area. And I wanted to keep it that way because I thought that sculpt would be a perfect representation of a certain pokemon. I did end up outlining its eyes though, it didn't look right otherwise.

    6. It's not my thing, but it can look cute/interesting. I think if the wig had long enough bangs to cover where the eyebrows would be.... and you glued some lashes on them...they could end up just looking like a character that doesn't wear make up!

    7. Whatever floats your boat.

In my case, I don't like having dolls without face ups...I admit some sculpts look awesome without them but I would never stick to it forever, I'd eventually give them some color.

    8. I get a lot of enjoyment out of giving my dolls face-ups, so I don't think I could keep one blank. But really, that's up to you- I think a lot of sculpts look really cool blank, but I couldn't do it.

    9. I see nothing wrong with it. It's not something I see often in complete dolls, but it is interesting to see. It gives the doll a sort of...otherworldly look to me.

    10. I don't really like it, but I guess it's a question of taste.

    11. I've kept dolls face-up less for years before, just because I liked how the blank dolls look (I tend to collect dolls with very realistic sculpts), but you should still spray it with UV-cut MSC to prevent/slow yellowing (A doll without a face-up does not automatically mean the owner is careless of it).

I tend to cycle from face-up to blank to face-up to a different type of face-up; blank is just one more look in addition to whatever face-ups I paint on them. They're more mannequine-like blank, which I feel gives a sense of hyper-realism more so than dolls with face-ups. I also think there's great dramatic effect in them: the play of light and shadow on a monochromatic surface can be quietly and beath-takingly gorgeous.

    12. I don't think I would get one without a face up unless it was going straight to someone to be done....I wouldn't want it delivered to and then have to send it off somewhere again for 3-4 weeks!

And if I could afford the doll but no face up, I'd certainly wait til I could afford it, I don't want a blank doll.

    13. I think it might look nice, just try to make noticeable that yours is a finished doll with no make up WebRep

    14. I think it's normal :) soon I will get back my doll from eye modding and I want to keep him without faceup just for a while because I have some photo ideas and I want to do the faceup but first get to know the new head better :)

    15. Yeah I think it's pretty normal :) My AOD Rao used to be faceless.. for a while.. And I actually liked her that way cus it made her look more asian XD

    16. i have a event head without a face-up because it was only one dollar, im not sure if im going to ever get a faceup for it since my dad wont let me ship it off... :/

    17. My Puki Piki Jason has no faceup. I ordered him blank so I could practice, but I've never been confident enough to try working that small...and I actually like him a lot without a faceup! He's adorable to me and can pull off so many looks just by the angle of his head and how his wig is positioned. I know it's not for everyone, but I love my little dude just the way he is. :)

    18. it's not "the norm" but if you like it that way nothing should stop you ^^

    19. Actually, my first boy received some high praise from an outside-the-hobby relative before his first faceup-- she thought he looked so beautiful without. And so did I, though I eventually gave him his first faceup when the weather allowed.

I've got two others who haven't been blushed and given faceups because I've never had the space and time to do so when the weather has been right for it. They will eventually have faceups, but I don't love them any less without until I can get them done.

When I see one of my dolls without a faceup, I think about how much I loved them when they first arrived, bald, naked, and faceless. I can appreciate the purity of the sculpt itself, and think about what I want them to look like when I am able to blush them, go through possibilities, all of that. I don't think it's creepy at all-- but then, I don't think hairless cats are creepy, either. I think they're adorable, so...

    20. to each there own but I think they look a bit weird without a faceup.. its basically a doll with... well without a face lmao
