Is it a good idea to get a $450 doll if it's gonna be your first?

Mar 10, 2010

    1. Some would say to get a less expensive starter doll.
Abio Angel would be a great example, because they are nice dolls at a good price! :D
But what really matters is that you love the sculpt.
Save up and look around for a while.
You could even try attending a doll meet.
      Good Luck!

    2. why not. if u like the doll, then buy. no regrets.

    3. Go with what you love. Because if you get something smaller/cheaper and it is not to your liking, you could fall out of the hobby .-.

Plus it is the saving suspense for the doll that makes it all worth while :D

    4. price shouldnt matter in getting your first. if you love it, go for it. XD with wigs clothes ect, my first was about 800.

    5. Definitely a good idea, if u really love it.... especially for a limited edition...
Actually my first doll is over $500 and I have no regret at all to get him be my first~

The love of a doll is not revent to how much it is=____________,= right?

    6. If you love it, get it.
      That's what i think.
      Price doesn't matter <3
      Heck, my first was $512

    7. I believe that if someone can't afford $400+ for a BJD then that certain someone shouldn't be on this hobby. It might sound rude but that's sadly the true unless you can make the clothes, shoes and face ups plus accessories by yourself.

If money is not an issue then just get the one you really want. And this is what I think about 'starter dolls' here

    8. I agree with many posters that you should save up for the doll that you want. Otherwise you will not be satisfied and will most likely end up spending more money later on getting the one you wanted in the first place. :)

    9. If it pulls at you, then it's worth it. You shouldn't save for something you are going to second guess.

    10. Ah, well. My first doll is $670 XD
Buy dolls you love is better than the cheaper one, dear.
Worth is just numbers, buy what you love is the best and I'm sure if you love it, it worth much more than $450 ^____^

    11. I just posted this in another thread but it holds here as well.

A starter doll is the first doll you have, no matter the price, quality or size. The doll you end up buying is the doll you're most comfortable with anyway. Four years ago my starter doll was about 1k, (not the most expensive nor the cheapest) still have until this day, because I bought what I liked in the first place.

Buy what you like.......not what's popular or special to someone else, you will appreciate him or her more.

    12. I say save up and buy one really nice thing, rather than 4 or 5 mediocre things. It applies to clothes, shoes, furnishings, whatever your passion. Otherwise you just end up with clutter.

I say buy the doll you like, don't just buy a doll to get by.

    13. I selected my doll like I would select a wedding dress, "I found it... its the one." Get the doll that you fall in love, it shouldn't matter the price as long as you love it. I spent over $200 on my first doll not including all the wigs and clothes I got her and she was absolutely worth it, I love her to death and can't imagine a better doll for me. ( I have two dolls, I love my Megi too!!) But seriously, get the doll that makes you happy and if it takes you a while to save up the money, trust me, it'll be worth it in the end.

    14. I still haven't gotten a doll yet because I have to keep saving and refuse to settle for something other than what I really want. So don't be discouraged! If you have your heart set on a particular doll, it's much better to just save for it rather than getting something cheaper and regretting it in the long run.

    15. My (first) doll was £550...including wig and eyes which I bought with. I'm sure £500 is over $450 >.< as long as your happy with it then it's really your choice? right?

    16. I never got a "starter" doll, as it was a limited full-set who first struck the "must have' emotions in me...

Besides, if you really want to talk about value, take the total price of the doll and divide it by the centimeters of size. You'd be surprised at how many of the smaller dolls actually cost more per centimeter of resin! I used to think of Pukis as little popcorn dolls, relatively inexpensive, super cute... and then I sat down and calculated how much, really, I was spending.

Not that it stopped me from getting more pukis, mind you. :P But I did realize that it was actually cheaper in the long run to bypass two pukis and get a MNF instead!

So, really, go for your first choice. Get the doll you love and lavish it with attention. You'll never regret it, the way you might if you got a "lesser" doll instead!

(Besides, if you're anything like me, you'll be extra careful with your first doll--and your favorite pick deserves the extra care!)

    17. Buy the doll you love! As evidenced in this thread, many people have had dolls over $450 as their first doll! Even a "less expensive" doll is still around $200-$300. Why not spend the money on a doll you genuinely, genuinely want? You'll be that much happier with the hobby! Yes, there's a lot to learn, and it's intimidating with a more expensive doll - but every doll is expensive, every doll is fragile, and every doll is special. But what's important is the doll that's special to you. As much as you need to learn - DoA has it all and more. There's nothing to fear, and there's no need for hesitation! Get the doll that makes your heart melt, not the one determined by your wallet!

    18. A lot of people see a first doll and a "starter" doll as two different things, and they're usually bought for two different purposes. I agree with you though that someone should buy the doll they like no matter what others say.

    19. I was still in high school when I bought my first doll. If I remember correctly it was $800. Up to that point I had never spent more than 500 dollars on anything other than plane tickets. I was working 30 plus hours a week and figured I would make the jump. I talked with the store owner and worked out a payment plan. After a very long 5 months I had paid off my doll. I have never regretted the purchase.

    20. My first was over $700 (Canadian). Don't let the price dictate what you want. You may regret buying a cheaper doll just because it was cheaper.
