Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Is it considered cheap if all someone's dolls are second handed?

May 26, 2014

    1. I don't think buying secondhand dolls are considered cheap. Also, you are also helping the person who wants to get rid of the doll a favor. In a way I would think buying secondhand actually gives more value to your doll. (I am not saying buying from the company is less valuable, but I do think there's an emotional value to secondhand dolls, that a new doll would not have.)

    2. I don't think buying second hand is cheap either. 3 of my dolls are second hand and I will gladly buy more. Like Artre said, there is an emotional value to secondhand dollies.

    3. I don't think buying second hand dolls is cheap. Most of mine are second hand. I like them with their face up already done. I can get them faster then having to wait for months to get them.

    4. I don't believe it to be cheap. It's not cheap in value unless the dolls been damaged and it certainly isn't cheaper to buy second hand in some cases. I don't think a doll really loses value just because someone else owned it before. In fact second hand is really a great opportunity to own dolls with a certain artist face up, or just a rare sculpt in general.

    5. ^Pretty much sums up how I feel, too.

    6. Haha not at all! You might find a gem here or there, but for the most part you will usually pay more for a doll secondhand than you would new! I've been looking for a MNF Rheia for a long while and when I find one on the marketplace it's always $500... and a year or so old when I can get a NEW one with some extra hands and the sleeping head for that price! I dont think buying second hand is bad per say, but you have to be active on the marketplace to find deals! One of the only pluses you get with buying secondhand is the wait time! :3 I know a lot of people have already commented the same thing... so sorry for the repeated rant! xD

    7. I really don't think it's cheap.
The dolls in general do not lose value that quick, only when damaged. And you can get some good deals here on the MP.
I have 2 dolls from the MP plus a body. Nothing wrong with them. It's not like they have a stamp on their back that says "pre owned" or something like that :XD:
And as quietly-stuttered pointed out, second handed dolls can be more expensive in the end. Due to extra's that come with the doll, or due to a face up that should add to the costs in the opinion of the owner.

    8. I do not think so! A lot of rare dolls are discontinued, and can only be purchased through the second hand market. Some of those can cost around 4x what you would pay for a new doll, depending on the model....*_*

    9. I don't think it's cheap!
I've recently traded one of my dolls for another's
I am very pleased with the trade.
A friend called her ''just a traded doll'' but I asked her:
If you had something, but wanted something else and someone else had it and wanted yours... wouldn't it be silly NOT to trade??

    10. Not at all. I know many second hand dolls that coast more than my entire collection. All of my dolls come straight from the company but they are not limited . Most dolls do not lose their value on the second hand market either. Especially the really good companies with high quality dolls.

    11. No. Many Volks limited can only obtained by secondhand market and they have high or very high price.

    12. Heavens no! I think of second hand dolls like animal rescues! They come to you from another life to start their new life with you, they may be dirty or broken, or they may be absolutely perfect. What matters most is not the price you paid but weather or not you LOVE the doll for what it is, and who it will be. One of my favorite dolls is a second hand, she was my second doll and she was a wreck when I got her, poorly done face up that stained some, one of her legs wasn't strung correctly and could have fallen off at any moment, she was dirty and evenly yellowed. I cleaned her up, made her some new clothes and learned how to do face ups thanks to her. <3

    13. Definitely not! I have a mixture of both and my most expensive doll was bought piece by piece secondhand. Some doll companies dolls are cheaper than others but I don't think that matters either. I don't care what someones elses dolls cost and I hope no one cares what mine cost. I don't judge others like that as it's really shallow. I just enjoy seeing all dolls and what their owners have done with them.

    14. Many, many people in the hobby (Heck, it's probably safe to say MOST of us-) have second-hand dolls in their collections. There's no stigma attached to that at all.

As others have said up-thread, that's the only way to get a past Limited or a discontinued/out-of-production doll, and a lot of us love those older sculpts. If the doll has been well-maintained and doesn't have extensive damage, they hold their value pretty well. That's particularly true of some of the rarer, more popular or more coveted Limited editions. Take a look at how much a Volks Williams or a Dollshe Bermann can go for, for instance. They're actually worth more than their original price.

Not every doll's value will go up, of course. Very common sculpts or dolls whose sculptural style has become dated or out-of-fashion (Like my own very stylized, anime-esque CP/Delfs-) may well sell for less than they were new, but even then they aren't considered junk. They're just "Sooooo Last Year". Or Retro. Depending on your point of view.

    15. Second handed dolls are not cheap o.O at least the ones I've gotten and the ones from my wishlist will be like 3 times more the original price:sigh having said that, I see all my second handed dolls the same way as the ones I got from the company and I see all my "cheap" dolls the same way as my expensive ones....actually, my favorite doll is very cheap one and his value is more than money for me,sooooo all that matters is that you like and enjoy the doll!!!

    16. THAT's the word for my living room full of old Customhouse! RETRO! :sumomo:

    17. Absolutely not!!!! There has many second-hand doll which cost thousands dollars and even double more expensive than the original price. One of the few reasons is...They are grail doll (LE, difficult to fine, discontinued, etc). So I don't think people can consider that second-hand is cheaper. They may have some but from what I've seen for years, just about 20% of all second hand is cheaper. Most of them are still near the original price or more expensive.

    18. I think owning a second hand doll is something special. ^^ I feel like I'm doing something quite noble by giving a doll a new home.

    19. :)I don't think buying second hand is cheap either.

    20. Buying secondhand isn't cheap at all. I think there's a lot you can learn from a doll that's a "fixer upper,"like Lady Moo said. It's all about the journey, not where you start or end.
