It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Is it considered cheap if all someone's dolls are second handed?

May 26, 2014

    1. I think there is a certain special feeling in how a doll company makes a doll just for you, but yet I almost prefer buying dolls second hand. You get to support a someone who needs the money from selling a doll (and you can make a new friend too in the process) and you give a new life to a doll that's "no longer wanted". C: It is sad how some dolls just end up lying around with no meaning while new dolls are produced continuously. Recycling is good in doll business too!

    2. Oh wow :o why would it be considered cheap?
They are still pretty expensive - sometimes, even more expensive than if you bought them new, like many have already pointed out! I don't really understand the rationale behind this way of thinking :p

    3. Have 8 dolls. Four are 2nd-hand. I prefer to purchase from another collector. Like someone said earlier, I get a kick out of taking in a "re-homed" dollie, especially when the dolls are no longer sold by the original company anymore. And the saving on shipping doesn't hurt, either ;)

    4. Cheap? Even should you get a doll at 1/2 off, these dolls are Not cheap. The vinyl $4 thrift store doll is cheap. The $500 previously owned BJD is not.

    5. I don't think so; and not all second hand dolls are cheaper than new ones either!
I don't care at all whether someone has only new dolls or all second hand ones or a mix of both, it makes no difference to me whatsoever.

I like - as someone mentioned before - the feeling of getting a brand new doll made just for me, and I'm truely it's first owner... but I also like 2nd hand dolls that already had a story and character and all that, it's pretty interesting! So I enjoy both.

    6. If you're in this hobby, I doubt there is a whole lot you can do to be considered 'cheap'... and a lot of times I've noticed its cheaper to buy new than secondhand.

    7. I've bought dolls and doll parts second hand. Like many others have pointed out, there's nothing cheap about it.

    8. Absolutely not.
Most of second-hand dolls are now sold-out and they are actually more expensive than from company.

    9. I don't think so. Sometimes the "right" doll happened before you got into the hobby, and you have to hunt them down when you can.

    10. No, not at all. And yes, if your are buying second hand, you might be spending even more.
And one more thing. Looking at the pictures of your dollies, no one will ever see the difference, are they bought from company or second-hand :)

    11. A majority of my dolls are secondhand and I honestly prefer buying secondhand!
You get the doll right away, you see the exact doll you're buying, you have a chance to get a custom face up already on the doll without having to worry about trying to get an artist to paint it.
A majority of my dolls are secondhand and I've NEVER paid more than retail for a doll I've bought, but I specifically shop around so I don't have to. Just make sure you know what you're looking at and ask the seller lots of questions to clear up anything left unsaid - and if you're ever unsure, there's always the community to help you out :)

I also almost always buy my wigs, clothes, etc all secondhand :) Again it's seeing the exact item you're going to buy, being able to ask the person for photos on a doll, possibly even photos on the same doll you're planning to use it for!(if you're lucky and the seller has your same doll), and again local shipping :)

    12. My most expensive dolls were secondhand Volks fullsets, so I certainly don't think so. :XD:

    13. I wouldn't consider anyone cheap for buying secondhand. Some of the rare dolls you have to buy secondhand, that is if you can even find a seller in the first place! Buying secondhand doesn't always mean you save money. Of course the rarer dolls cost more. 2 out of 3 dolls I own is secondhand. And I couldn't get them at MSRP because they are Volks Dollfies and they usually rise in price in the aftermarket.

    14. All of my dolls are secondhand. I feel like it's a good way to support multiple companies even though I only like one kind of companies dolls. buy buying from other collectors, I give them the means to buy other dolls.

    15. I've gone both routes and second hand dolls are generally less of a hassle.

    16. Nobody is going to know the doll is second hand, so no - it isn't cheap at all, unless you personally feel it is! I own a ton of second hand dolls myself, some of which I adore more than the ones I've purchased direct. (:

    17. I certainly hope it's not considered "cheap"... as it's what I hope to do. That said, if someone thinks you're "cheap" then they need better things to think about. ;)

    18. How would anyone know they were second-hand unless you told them?

Besides, so far as I can tell, unless the sculpt isn't limited, most people end up getting their "grail" dolls second-hand, because they never get a chance to see the doll until after production is cut off. That makes them far more valuable, not less.

    19. I think is not a bad thing to have an all-second-hand collection. This hobbie is, sort of, a luxury if you look at the prices...
So yes, it is cheaper, but it doesn't mean you're 'cheap'.

    20. I don't see anything wrong with buying them second hand. It's still an expensive hobby either way. Some dolls barely depreciate so you're still paying a pretty penny. Plus I can't imagine waiting months after I've already sunk a few hundred dollars. I'm impatient.
