Is it considered cheap to...

May 13, 2014

    1. I borrow from my fashion doll's closet for my little BJD's all the time. Some of those clothes are very well made indeed and not cheap at all. You ever priced a 16" fashion doll outfit? They can run $100 sometimes. Some outfits are darned near couture level in terms of sewing. I have 3 or 4 Madame Alexander 16" doll coats that would make a human tailor weep over the sheer perfection. They're totally the real thing, real wool, perfectly stitched, padded and fully lined just like designer human coats, only they're sized down for 16" dolls. In the BJD clothing lines I've seen similar coats for dolls going for $100 and that's just for a coat. Not the rest of the outfit. Tonner, Mel Odom, Madame Alex, they all have made some superb outfits for their dolls and some of it fits the slim MSD dolls very well indeed.

    2. Honestly, as long as you like it and it fits well then I don't see what the issue is for anyone. Just do what you want and have fun. c:

    3. Buying fashion doll clothing can be cheap or expensive, just like BJD clothing. Fashion dolls have a much bigger following and they are made to display clothing so there are a lot of options. Some things are bound to fit a BJD. Why not grab a cute outfit or accessory?

If you don't want to worry about having to re-size American Girl clothing, you can find BJD clothing for similar prices.

    4. I definitely think that it all is based around how it looks, if it looks like the quality of a 5 year old with a needle, thread and strips of fabric, I would probably pass on that. However, if it's a pretty decent article of clothing, it really doesn't matter where it came from. Over all, there's not many of people who are going to be able to point out that whatever outfit your doll might be wearing is Mattel made or not. Mostly when I see something that FITS someone's doll and looks flattering, I really don't question where it came from.
But that's really my own personal opinion. I may spend hundreds to buy a doll but it's certainly not easy money that I can blow on outfits that are 10x's more expensive than my own.

    5. Most of my dolls don't really fit fashion doll clothes (sadly!) but I bought an adorable little jacket off the MP that once belonged to a different kind of doll that is the same quality as my clothes for regular BJDs and I love it. The fashion dolls I 'do' collect don't even "have" cheap clothes and for one I'd love to use my tiny Azone wardrobe on my other dolls since it's so high quality itself >^<;;;;

    6. Totally.

If it was any of my business (which it isn't of course! :)) I'd question on the perceived value of purchasing 'cheaper' clothes that don't fit at all. On the face of it it may seem cheaper; but once you calculate shipping and the amount of work and time it would take to make the clothing roughly fit, is it still worth it? Wouldn't it be easier to buy BJD clothing that costs only $10 more, to have it fit the moment it came home?

Obviously there's all varieties of this situation (clothes do actually fit, clothes are super cheap/worth fixing up etc etc), but I'm just putting it out there for people like me who didn't realize how much effort resewing would be until the project was right in front of us xD

    7. my thoughts, exactly. it's your dolls, your money, why should you care what other people think, if it makes u happy that's all that matters....however i do agree as well that AM doll clothes won't fit bjd's

    8. Not at all!!!! why people look down on others for stuff like that? :| it's really immature and why should we care? it is our choice plus some of those clothes are cute and NOT cheap! I have a Soom fairy legend, they're the size of fashion dolls so guess where I get all the clothes from? :) his wardrobe is full of fashion AND ken clothes! see here and here and I can truly say that fashion doll clothes are not cheap *_*... also, even my tinies have many ken shirts and pants...they're cheaper and well made, even my MSDs wear some ken t-shirts or fashion items...here is one of my MSDs wearing a ken shirt and I have many BJD shirts like that but I always go back to that one because it is a perfect fit. Haters can kiss my a** I love those clothes and make my boys look cute, like my little one who is wearing a ken shirt here:

Just do what you like =)

    9. I agree! I'd actually rather make an outfit from scratch than spend money on clothes that don't fit or need alterations before they fit

    10. I guess some people would consider themselves cheap if they force their dolls into clothes that don't really fit but that's really up to them. I mean...if other people are going to judge you by that...why not have them buy clothes for your doll and see how they like that?

But to say the truth, if you find doll clothing made for non-bjd dolls that actually fit your dolls and you tell people about it....they would weep with joy and kiss the ground you stand on. We've got threads here dedicated to "XXX doll and what fits" with people scrambling about trying to find things that fit irregular sized dolls and telling people about them.

    11. I'm in agreement with those who say the look is more important than the price or brand. There are clothes made for BJD that cost less than certain clothing made for American Girl or other fashion dolls.

It's more about the fit. My SD girl does have a couple of tops meant for AG sized dolls, and I think they look cute on her, because the style of those particular tops is meant to be loose fitting, and since it's meant to be more like a dress on AG, it hits just below my girl's hip and looks cute with jeans or leggings. These things work, but the more tailored outfits for AG are not going to look right on most BJDs. They'll be too short on most SDs, and far too wide on most MSDs. It'll look sloppy, like a little kid playing dress up. Or maybe like teddy bear clothes on Barbie. It just isn't a nice fit. Same with fashion doll clothes. Barbie tshirts, Living Dead Doll dresses, and Bratz Boys tshirts looked super cute on the ResinSoul yoSD I used to own. But the Barbie dresses tailored for a large bust just looked silly on her.

If I find something that fits my doll well, and is cheap, I'm thrilled! I just want my dolls to look decent, I don't need them to have the most expensive stuff. Cheaper stuff just means I can buy more of it!

    12. For me it's okay if it doesn't look cheap :3
For everything else there are matercard and photoshop ~

    13. Who cares! I like to think that I shopping for the best deal for my dolls and my sisters have a few american girl dolls with extra clothes laying around, so Ive done what your wondering, if the clothes work and such and tell you the truth they dont but with a little hand sewing or if your good with a sewing machine you can make it fit and give your doll a whole new wardrobe. Those clothes arent cheap but you can find clothes at like micheals, joanna, or hobbylobby and they have some clothes for AG. Try it out there that way you save more money

    14. I think a lot of PukiPuki owners fit theirs with Kelly clothes.

There's bound to be nice looking clothes that don't look cheap.
I think the thing that matters is the individual clothing design. For instance, I personally won't fit my doll in something sparkly, which I think makes my doll look cheap.

    15. The details on the Kelly clothes is usually exquisite, and the seams high quality. I can't see what'd be wrong with it, other than the label.

    16. I buy Ellowyne Wilde things for my slim minis all the time, and they are in no way cheap, but I have to say beautifully made and tailored.
I often repurpose all size things for dolls.
Who cares? If things are done well, the source means nothing.

    17. ^This so much. I don't think that most American Girl clothes will fit BJD's, but if you like them, and are happy with the result, it shouldn't matter what other people think.

    18. Silk, AG clothes do not fit, but you could tailor some of them if you were so inclined.
I have tailored children and baby clothes for the biggest Dollmore girls, it's kind of fun, and I know many have tailored (is that even the right word? probably not) antique doll clothes for BJDs.
oh and many of my tinies have vintage and new Barbie stuff.

    19. If the clothing fits or can be altered to fit the doll/dolls in question, it's totally an option! If you like the way it looks, that is the only thing that matters. ^__^

    20. If you're going to spend time tailoring to fit, it would probably be better to sew it yourself in the first place. Then you know it will fit.
