Is it "ok" to buy more than 1 ltd of a certain type of doll?

Dec 2, 2007

    1. hellz yes it's okay. Sure people won't be happy if they lose out to you but hey, you snooze you lose. Besides, you should never let others dictate how you spend your money. If you want to make twins and it's a limited doll go right ahead, it's your money!

    2. If a person wanted the doll personally then they should go for it, if to sell later then it's just anoying. I have one of those dolkot limited, i think there's like only one of each, not sure though ^^' and i'd be lying if i didn't like the fact that he was limited, and that i didn't feel good cos i got him before someone else did... I love the boy and have no intention of selling ever... but someitmes my friend says that its wrong for me to not feel bad that someone else who was saving money for it may have missed out to get him... it's true i should feel bad but, i worked for him to ^^ alls fair in dolls and war! (except scalping or flipping on market place or ebay)

    3. For me, this "debate/question" is frighteningly close to being moral policing. However, that being said - I have no issue whatsoever with collectors who collect similar molds/companies/limiteds. Den of Angels does have in place a non-scalping rule, so flipping here doesn't happen. Flipping on other forums or eBay, of course, is always a financial possibility for those lucky enough to procure a mold - and in that case one can profit just as much from a single doll purchase as from multiples of the same limited. ;) Profiting after a scalping/flipping timeline has passed....is another debate, isn't it?

    4. Hahah! I would have said EXACTLY the same thing before this June, when I got the renewal Hypermaniac Choyangbi and Hahanbi... I got them with the intention of letting my originals go (one was beauty butter, er.. white and the other was also on the distinctly yellow side... I prefer the pale pinkish resin of the renewals now). But somehow once they got here they were different enough from the originals that I really couldn't bring myself to part with any of them. :sweat

So, it's funny how attitudes change when situations differ. I can't imagine buying two of the same LE sculpt deliberately. But, having ended up getting two at different times, I can now see the appeal. And, I'm honestly not saying that one day when I really have to downsize (my kids already completely fill my small bedroom) I might not end up having to say goodbye to one or another of my 'duplicates'.

And, one thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that many Dolpa/websites/stores that sell LE dolls restrict them to one per customer. So, it's not as easy as going to a store and seeing how many you can throw in your cart before someone else grabs them, even if you wanted to do that.

      H

    5. I say if you can afford it and want to buy an army of a particular limited doll then unless the company itself is limiting how many you can buy then who is to say that it's wrong?

    6. I think its perfectly okay to buy as many of a certain doll as a person can lay out cash for. Its their decision. Its also okay for a company to say "only 1 or 2 per customer", as a legitimate response to try and control scalping or to ensure that they can spread the doll out as far as possiblel to people who really want them.

Some people do like collecting all versions of a particular doll they fall in love with, or having twins, and that's fine too.

Scalping sucks but theres not a very effective way to prevent it. The market will pay what the market will pay to get a sought after doll.

All this said it is really awkward if a doll is like super limited to 3 or 10 in the world and somebody wants 2... I would suggest that the person think about how many other people might have wanted the doll too before buying multiples in a case like that, but there's no way to stop/discourage them unless the comany has prohibited multiple sales.

    7. Oooh, as a matter of fact, I have seen those signs posted on some sites! I had completely forgotten about those! Thanks for reminding me. ^_^

That would solve the problem for some limited dolls, that's for sure.

    8. i guess my free market preference is a bit too strong.... Even if the company prevents someone from purchasing multiples of a limited doll, there's not stopping someone from purchasing more of that doll elsewhere. To me, even if there's not and someone decides to purchase a whole mass of limited dolls... well, so be it. i can be annoyed or frustrated, but i support a capitalist economy. Even if someone decided to buy just to resell for profit, i could not fault them. It'd be nice to keep that sort of interaction to a minimum, but they have every right to do with their money as they please. Others getting angry or saying that they aren't buying for the right reason won't stop the fact that the only -real- way to stop that from happening is for the -entire- market to blacklist the person and refuse to allow it to happen. But that won't happen because someone else will likely smell the ability to make a profit and buy, so instead of the doll making it to a home that it will be loved, it will instead be bounced around until someone can finally making enough of a profit to justify selling it.

      Anyways. ^^;;; So says sera. This is likely why my professor calls me cynical. xD;

    9. Hm. I think if it's a really small LE like... LE 5 or something, it's a bit... rude may not be the right word, but odd to have nearly half of the entire edition. That said, many companies make one-off dolls which are essentially a limited edition of one, and obviously nobody has a problem with people owning those. *shrug*

I have absolutely no problem at all with someone owning more than one of "larger" edition limited edition dolls, even a small large edition like Volks' Momoko or Chii. If someone can manage to both afford and find two of an expensive and rare doll like that, well congratulations to them! XD The whole point of limited dolls is that there will never be enough for the number of people who might want one. I don't see owning a rare doll or more than one of the same rare doll as taking away someone else's chance to own one. That's just silly.

    10. Personally, if it's within a person's financial ability to buy that many limiteds, then it's up to them how many they want to get. However, if it's limited to 5 in the world or something, I would say really, really think about whether you really want quadruplets before you go out and get them.

I do have to admit that I can get a bit annoyed when I hear certain situations concerning Limiteds though. I've heard that story about the person who wanted quadruplets of a limited doll and went around PMing people about how it's their dream doll, please sell it to them (without explaining that they already had two or three of that doll in hand already). Finally, after a few months, the buyer had four of the limiteds. Quadruplets fulfilled hey? Except that not long after, said buyer decides that they don't want so many of the same sculpt after all and wants to sell the Limiteds. Now that annoys me.

Basically, what I'm saying is that we've all seen enough stories about triplets or quadruplets of Limiteds suddenly not being suitable as triplets or quadruplets. So it would be nice if people thought about it carefully before going out to buy a large number of Limiteds.

    11. If you want it just to have it for twins etc, I don't see what's wrong with it at all, especially if there's no one per household rule. If you have the money for it, why not?

I don't think many people would be happy with you if you're just getting two to keep in a box somewhere in Antarctica, but then again it is your money.

After reading what LKJ said, I'm in complete agreeance with them. I wouldn't be too okay with that, but as long as you were to think long and hard about twins, I've got no problem with it.

If you decide to go for it, good luck. As for those that say, "it's taking away someone else's chance to own one" : It's not really, because they probably still wouldn't have gotten one if they didn't have the money for it when it was out.

They missed out. If they didn't grab what they wanted when it was available, tough cookies.

    12. Yep. I can attest to that instinct first-hand. I'm one of those people... at least on some levels.

I have NS and BW versions of a couple of the CP limiteds and several of my favorite "open stock" sculpts, and I'd be lying if I said that "completeness" wasn't a part of why I bought at least one or two of those guys... But when you get right down to it, I still did it because I WANTED them, not with the intention of holding them as some kind of investment opportunity. I didn't buy Ptolemaeus or Kaedae to resell. I bought them because I liked them, because I wanted to "complete the set" and to fill certain roles in my crew of characters.

I don't feel the least bit guilty about my multiples because of that. I don't think that's a bad set of reasons for having them... and I'm certainly not going to get on anyone else's case for having similar tastes or motivations to my own.

So, if you have the means and the opportunity, and aren't just out to scalp... I say go for it. It's not a Bad Thing to like a sculpt enough to have more than one, even if that sculpt isn't commonly available in unlimited numbers.

    13. So far almost every doll I have bought is a LE. Two of these were a time sensitive thing, and I flipped head over heels. One was an MSD, and made me realize MSDs maybe aren't my thing.

But my first doll is a LE SDF (Cian, the unpopular one DX), and I knew upon seeing his face the first time he needed a twin. The other boys I have in hand are gorgeous, but the did not inspire the same urge to get another.

If you have the money to manage LE twins whether first or second hand, by all means. I'm even in a Minimee GO run by a local, where between us we'll own more than half the heads. So I certainly see nothing wrong with it, and could never tell someone they have too many of a mold/too many limited molds/whatever. Because that'd just be jealousy on my part and would also be a case of :potkettle

    14. personally i think there's nothing wrong with buying two of a limited, but just out of fairness reasons i would only limit myself to one even though i would like two, becuase then other people can have a chance at it.

    15. I guess I would feel ashamed to deprive someone else of a limited doll by buying two alike, especially if there are only 10-20 of them. But that's just my opinion :)
I think that this is up to every single person to decide. If you want two dolls and make them twins - that's your choice. But personally I would like different dolls if I have enough money to buy two limited :).

    16. it depends, as long as you were planning to keep both dolls (if not, that would be really nasty). If you have the money, the chance and that urgent need of getting them... why not? they're going to receive all the love they deserve.

    17. It alright if you love them and not having the intention of selling them for profit. If getting the limited dolls just for selling I guess it's rather rude to people who wants them. =D

    18. honestly it's your money and if you want twins or triplets and are not just getting them to resell at an inflated price...then I see no problem with it...I personally own 3 SwD Suzu/Renge Yo's...and I absolutely adore all of them...I've had them all for like 2 + years and I plan to have them for the rest of my life....I wouldn't trade or sell them for the world ^_^ I fought long and hard for all of them...I even traded one of them for an original Elf Lishe with default luts makeup for one...some people thought I was a bit loopy for trading that for such a small doll that was worth much less...and I even paid over $600 for the second and the third thankfully I snatched up at the US Volks store opening for original cost...but i wouldn't change how I got them as I think they were all worth the wait and cost...I <3 all three of them.
and I also have Shiratori Twins...a boy and girl...and I love them to death...wouldn't sell or trade them for the world either...both sets are limited and can be very expensive to acquire...but if you love them and it's what you want...seriously go for it...don't' feel guilty in the least ^_^

    19. I'd say it's alright, of course depending on the reason. I mean if somewhere were to go in a buy as many as they could get their hands on just to sell them for more later when there's none left on the site... that's just bad...

I can see why you'd feel worried about wanting 2 of a ltd, but if you really want them that badly, I say go for it :)

    20. Yeah, I think it's fine, so long as it isn't for scalping. I think it's incrediablly rude to buy limited dolls just so you can sell them later on at a huge price. I think it's fine if you want twins though ^.^ ((I also think it's rude if you don't have the money and make your family starve -_- but I highly doubt that's the case lol))
