Is it "ok" to buy more than 1 ltd of a certain type of doll?

Dec 2, 2007

    1. I think this is interesting.

You shoud´nt feel bad at all, if it´s to keep them.. God it amuses/bothers me, the amount of cats that need surgery right after dollpas, it´s unbelievable

Scalping is always going to be there. I´d rather have one person buy three limietds out of a batch of 5 to make the triplets of her/his dreams than someone else buying just oe if it´s to sell it

One of the beauties of this hobby is the freedom we have when it comes to creating a character, and the uniqueness they all have. If you´ve decided you want twins you have the same right than anyone else

What bothers me is people that just get them because it´s cool and mainstream to have a dollpa doll. I see much of that coming up , we´re almost at dolllpa 18, many of us wo´nt get our dreamdolls because someone luckier will decide 5 minutes before the after event they can´t live without X doll..will get it and sell it when they have told all of their dolly friends they have it and get tired three days later

    2. I say go for it.

I'd rather see someone who loves their multiple limiteds and plays with them and loves them rather than someone who buys them and puts them on a shelf to collect dust.

    3. yes it is ok, it would be so cute to have a xi alesiter twins!

    4. I think it's just fine to buy two of the same doll if that is what you want and you can afford it, even if they are limited. I have two little Tricky Ai twins that were limited to just 10. At first I only bought one & then they were sold out. Then a few days later one popped back up for sale & I bought him too. I absolutely Love them as a set & I am so glad I bought both.

    5. I understand falling in love with a limited mold and wanting multiples of it... hecks knows I love me some MNF Shiwoo and would own a Shiwoo tribe (even though he's not limited) if I had the money.

But when it's a limited doll, especially a highly sought after one... there is a point where you just start looking greedy to the rest of the fandom. I know, I know, you should be able to have as many of any doll as you want. That's how it works in theory. But in practice? If only 10 of a doll are available and you gobble up four, people are going to view it as acting greedy, whether that's a valid viewpoint or not.

    6. Yes, I understand wanting to be kind & letting others have a chance to get the limited doll they wish for, but you can't just be angry with the person who bought more than one. You would also have to blame the doll company that is selling the dolls for not placing a limit of "one per customer". That's how they create more desire for their dolls - people start scurrying to buy when they put the dolls on sale so they won't miss out. I have my twins & they make me very happy...... I am not a bad person for owning two, just very lucky.

    7. Sure, if you want 2 and can afford it :/

    8. I don't know. Sometimes, when it's of such exclusivity, it almost makes me wince when a person has more than one. Take Bermanns, for instance. I've seen those with 3 or more, when it's already incredibly rare to even have one.

Personally, when it is of such limited availability, I think when you have more than one, you are keeping another person from owning such a doll. You already have this highly-sought doll. Why have another?

Of course, when the doll is incredibly gorgeous and with such personality and so unique, there's nothing I can say, like helene and SDink's Bermanns.

If it's a certain set, as in a standard doll with "limited clothing and make-up" I don't see the point in having two. They're exactly the same. If it's a limited mold, I can understand that.

    9. i wouldnt buy the same mold if i already had 1, but if u want to thats ur decision.

    10. I...really don't see how it is anyone else's business.

If you really want that limited doll soooo badly, don't sulk and blame others who were luckier, wealthier, or faster than you for getting it first. If you really want it, you will save the extra money, look longer and farther, etc.

Nobody has any obligation to "save" a doll for someone else. A doll is not a necessity, it's a luxury item. If someone is hoarding a lot of an important medicine and thus hurting other people's chances of getting medicine that they actually need, there is a moral issue there. With dolls, none at all. We frequently say that we "need" such-and-such a doll to show how much we love it or want it, perhaps, but that's all in our heads.

Also, I notice people only take this particular logic of "fairness" as far as it goes in their favor. If it's "unfair" for one person to buy multiple limited dolls when other people could've gotten their dream doll, then is it also "unfair" for you or me to spend $1000 on a doll period when we could've spent it on charity? If the hypothetical other buyer somehow "deserves" this limited doll more than a person who already own one of these limited dolls, then surely a needy family deserves $1000 of food more than I deserve one of these expensive toys? Or, hey, I have extra bedrooms in my house, maybe I'd better invite somebody who couldn't find housing here to live with me. Since, you know, I already have enough space and my extra space is just greedily impinging on other people's ability to find space that they need more than I do.

I'm being extreme on purpose to drive home the point that the standard of "enough" (i.e, the amount of ____ that you can possess before being considered greedy) is totally ambiguous and is seen differently depending on your perspective.

Personally, I don't see much point to multiples of one sculpt. But I certainly defend people's right to buy what they like without having to worry about the fandom jumping on their backs!

    11. This I totally agree with. It might not seem fair that the person is getting judged that way, or they might swear up and down that they're not doing it to be greedy, but you really can't help how you might appear when, like you said, you buy four of a limited of ten. Whether that person cares about how they might be viewed or not, though, is totally up to them.

    12. Yes, it's okay. It's even okay if you buy all of them. The only problem is, do you have the money to afford them? Don't let others change your decision if you really want to do it. You might regret it later.

Then again, I know how other people feel. It's kind of "unfair" in a way if others never get the chance to own one of the limited dolls themselves after saving up and such.

    13. I think it's okay to buy two of a limited edition if you have fallen in love with the mold, or desperately want the dolls to fulfill characters you have in your heart. As long as the dolls are loved it's fine with me. Even with a small number like 10 you have to realise that many more people than 10 will want a doll and many will be disappointed anyway whether you buy one or two.

I think scalping is wrong, but like others have said it is a fact of life in many collecting communities.

As for collecting limited dolls to gain popularity I find that so sad. It's sad for the doll who probably won't get truly loved, but it's sad for the person buying them too. A person must be very insecure inside to need to own things in order to make people like them/envy them.

    14. See, IMO that defeats the purpose of having the dolls in the first place.

BJDs exist for people to enjoy. If they're buying them as a status symbol they aren't actually enjoying the dolls themselves.

    15. I think it depends on reason, but then again, what am I gonna do about it? It's someone else's choice whether or not they'd like to do this.

I'd lean more on the side of agreement with this if I was aware that the buyer were getting the doll because they loved it, rather than wanting to make a profit, but that's just a personal thing for me. :3 At the end of the day, it's the individual's choice.

    16. I tend to agree with this. Characters that are twins and work perfectly as twins, I can understand the mold, but when it gets more than that, or when it's not really about loving the characters...

But at the end of the day there's nothing I can do about it. And I'm not going to hound people about it, it's their business. ::shrug::

    17. People can own whatever they want. I really don't take "fair" into account when I look at this hobby. People can be annoyed if someone gets the doll they want and doubly annoyed when they get two of them, but if someone has the money and drive to get something I really can't argue with that. I also don't feel someone needs to justify their purchases through character and storylines either. Not everyone in this hobby is seeking to create characters through dolls, they may simply want to display one mold that they love in a different manner.

This doesn't take away the rights of people to be annoyed at someone for flaunting their good fortune, I just don't feel that fairness is even anything that can be applied to it. It also doesn't feel like a moral problem either, more just frustration and jealousy.

    18. If you can pay for it and obtain it legally.
You have the right to buy it.

If there is no limit placed on the purchase of a special item by the company / seller than yes, it is perfectly ok to buy more than one of a limited item. Heck, you could by 10 out of 10 if you like.

Its really disturbing to see how often people post questions about "is such and such ok / unethical" to situations not regarding ethics but rather personal choice and RIGHT regarding privately owned items...

Seriously, what you spend your money on is YOUR choice.
How many items you buy is YOUR choice.
And what you do to / with those items after purchase is YOUR choice.
      No one else's.

Its not unethical or rude to buy more than one item of a special item. Unfortunate for others perhaps. But not rude or unethical.
Nor is it rude or unethical to then alter or modify that limited item... Distressing perhaps for those who wanted it, but again... Its your possession, your choice.

    19. If you're buying them simply to have them for yourself, then I see no problem with it. If you're one of the first to know about it and you're willing to shell out the money to do it, who's to stop you? Limited additions are generally a "first come, first serve" kind of thing. So, order as many as you'd like.

But, if you're buying them simply to sell them to the highest bidder once the sales are over, then you're clearly doing it to be malicious and that's just mean. But, again, you bought them yourself and what you do with them is also your choice.

So, all in all, knock yourself out.

    20. I agree with your post completely. I can understand really wanting a rare sought after doll and being frustrated when it proves next to impossible to get. However, fairness, ethics, whatever really don't have any part to play. What happens is what happens. It just is. As long as the person obtained their multiple LEs legally, then there's no reason to be mad at the person. Be frustrated if thats the way you feel, but don't take it out on the lucky doll owner.

Some people just really love a particular head mold and want more than one--it doesn't have to be because of selfish reasons. And if its that hard to get, and a person owns multiples, then theres a very good chance that they worked very hard to get them.
