Is it "ok" to buy more than 1 ltd of a certain type of doll?

Dec 2, 2007

    1. in an extreeme situation like say its a limited sculpt of 10 and one person buys 8 of them, I think thats kind of in bad taste, chances are you don't have octuplet characters and you'll just be looking to sell later at an inflated price. but just because I think something is in bad taste doesn't mean I'm going to give anyone a hard time over it, if people don't agree with inflated prices then the obvious solution is to not pay, move on and find another doll

but at the end of the day thats an extreem situation, I see no problem with buying twins etc as long as you can afford it, what ever floats your boat

    2. Maybe someone is going for an Octomom theme? :o

    3. If your fortunate enough to be able to afford more than one ltd then why not? All i see is over people being over jealous of the fact you own the same limited =/

    4. I think it's important to consider how you would feel in the same situation, and act according to your personal moral compass. For example, if there were only 10 of a doll available and somebody came along and got 3 and you were somebody who didn't get one, would you be okay with what they did? If you are okay with having been #8 in line, but without getting a doll because of that, then I think you are justified to do it to another person... do unto others as you would have them do unto you type thing. I think what would really bug me is a hypocrite... you do it to others but get really angry if they do it to you.

In my case, I would feel bad if I were that #8. In fact, I would probably feel sad if I was number #200 in line for a doll limited to 200, and #199 bought the last two dolls. So, because of that, I would never buy more than one IN PERSON AT ORIGINAL PRICE. I think if you want the second doll, you should buy it on the aftermarket >.>

    5. Though you don't know where in line people actually are (as far as I can tell, anyway). It really comes down to whether you can hit the buy button fast enough if it's a really desirable LE. I don't expect people hold back on my account--if they want to put in the effort and have the cash to snag more than one, then good for them. Sure, I might have missed out, but there will always be other dolls and there's also still a chance of finding that doll on the secondary market.

I believe we should treat our fellow hobbyists decently, but I think this is taking things a step too far. As long as there is buying and selling and LEs there's always going to be somebody that missed out on a particular doll, that's just life, and I don't think our personal responsibility extends to making sure everybody gets the doll they want. Keeping a watch out for scammers, yes, making arbitrary decisions on how many LEs a person can buy, no (I do agree with you about the hypocrite thing, though--you shouldn't get it both ways) : P

    6. For the reason that you state "wanting twins" That to me is ok.

What makes me mad is when people buy 2, 3, 4 or more and then turn around and sell them as soon as they get them for double what they paid for them.

Thats wrong to me. It one thing when a dolls value goes up its another when its forced up by people like that. I hvae wanted some of the Soom Month dolls but when they come up for sale (for the most part as soon as they are relived) they want double what they sold for or more and most times dont even have all of their parts!!! I think this hurts all of our dolls value as well as the community as a whole.

So if you buy more then one limited becasue YOU want them and are going to use them then its fine. If your buy more then one just to turn around and resell it on the market its not.

    7. I understand this situation can be upsetting, but how exactly does it "hurt all of our dolls value"? For one thing, the only doll whose value is being directly affected is the Soom Monthly in question, not "all of our dolls" or even "all of our Soom dolls." (It's possible that people reselling Soom monthlies for high prices in the marketplace indirectly drive down the value of later Soom Monthlies, in that more people will choose to jump on a monthly when it's issued rather than have to pay a lot for it later, especially since the numbers of monthlies so far haven't been limited and therefore the number of Soom Monthlies out there are dependent on how many people choose to buy from Soom directly. So higher resale prices for the Feb Monthly means more people buy the March Monthly direct and then there are more March Monthlies out there, so they are worth less than if there were fewer. But that seems like sort of a reach.)

For another thing, I would think that when people ask a high price for a Soom monthly and they get it, especially in this bad economy, that actually helps the value of that particular doll stay high, as it's all about what the market will bear.

    8. I just dislike the people who think that the universe owes them a doll. I think that's the sentiment that really gets to people the most. I guess there might be someone out there who is jealous of me because I have a Volks Kurt and they might want one, but I'm not sorry I got him and I didn't get him to spite them, I got him because I love the doll. I don't have time for people who want to make someone else miserable because they have two Sards or two Okita Soujis. It's not your business how many dolls someone does or does not have and this includes limited molds.

Directly after I bought my SDC Kurt from Volks, his webpage symbol changed to the low stocks symbol. Within a few days, he was completely sold out and I was so relieved to have him before he sold out. I suppose that by buying a Kurt in the first place I was depriving someone else from having one, but that's not my fault. I had the money and I wanted him so I bought him. In life, you can't always be worrying about other people otherwise you'll be the one that is always missing out on dolls!

I think it is quite noble that you would refuse to buy two LE dolls in person if the opportunity came up, but you can't expect that to be a law across the dolly world. I certainly wouldn't be able to uphold it, however selfish that may seem. If I see a doll that would make a perfect set of twins and I wanted twins, as long as I had the money for it I would go for two of that doll, limited edition or not. I don't actually want twins myself, but it's a good example.

It will be interesting to see what sort of prices Vesuvia will fetch on the secondary market. She wasn't terribly popular on release and there wasn't a rush to get her the same way there was with Euclase and Heliot. Either the rarity of Vesuvias will drive the price up or the unpopularity of the doll will drive prices down.

I think that a doll is only worth what someone will pay for it. If a doll is limited or rare for other reasons, such as discontinuation, people are happier to pay more to obtain them. It's the same in any other hobby. People pay more to obtain rare stamps or rare postcards.

    9. And that's your opinion! And I think that you're in the moral right because, even though you wouldn't worry about somebody missing out, you wouldn't expect anybody else to worry about you missing out! You wouldn't expect them to hold out for you, so you don't have any obligation to hold out for them! This is exactly my point -- just as long as people treat others as they want to be treated, they're still doing the "right" thing to me :)

My original post was essentially emphasizing moral relativism~ We all come from different places, different cultures, different generations -- in fact, the only thing we really have in common is loving dolls! It's unreasonable to expect that we all have the same standard of "decency to other hobbyists" or "the right thing to do"! In fact, the only thing you CAN judge somebody on is whether somebody practices what they preach, and treat others as they wish to be treated. Thus, a "moral person" is just somebody who follows their own moral compass :D Like you, and like me!

The second paragraph in my original post was just how I, personally, treat others and hope that they'll treat me :D That is to say that I, personally, would hold back for an anonymous someone who I am never likely to know or meet, and I'd do it just because I'd hope that just one person, somewhere, had gotten the doll they were really hoping for! I agree that if this was expected/required behavior for everyone, that would definitely be taking things a "step too far"! I don't think anybody should be held to any moral compass but their own. But, even if someone reads that and thinks "That isn't being nice, that's being ridiculous!" it's completely okay! Both of us can't change our feelings about what's "nice", so we may have to make different decisions and take different actions in order to feel like a "good person." These are just the actions I feel I need to take if I want to think of myself as "good" :D

    10. I'm not sure if the first paragraph was specifically directed towards me (sorry if it's not!), but I don't feel entitled to a doll, or angry and jealous if somebody has the doll but I do not... by "feeling bad if I didn't get one" I meant just that... feeling sad that you missed out on something you wanted. I didn't mean to imply I would have any negative feelings toward the person who bought two dolls and thus I didn't have the opportunity!

But, if I could save somebody from that experience, I would! Not because I would be a "bad" person if I didn't, or because I think it should be a "law across the dolly world" though. I just think it would be an act that I would call "nice," and for me it's important to be "nice" for people, especially when I hope they'd be "nice" to me in the same situation! :D

But, again, I don't feel like somebody would be "mean" if they didn't do it, or that there should be rules across the board for everyone to follow. My point was that everyone should only do what they are comfortable with others doing to them~ Follow your own moral compass and such~~ :D

    11. Bix is another one that it seems that not a lot of people bought. After he shipped out, a very popular faceup artist did a faceup of him and suddenly all these people were like "OMG I should have bought a Bix!" I bet if someone put a Bix up now, his value would be pretty high.

    12. I think this is very true. Many who had missed out on Sard ended up jumped (literary jumped) at Heliot when he was released. Many also bought Amber because they thought she was going to be the last monthly with Hooves. Many even question the second market value of Sard when Heliot was released and loads of people bought him.

Personally, I do not think much if any one ends up with more than one LE. If they are lucky enough and have the money for the dolls, then good for them.

    13. No, not directed at you at all! Sorry that it wasn't clear!

There have been people who have sent PMs and been openly nasty to people with two Bermanns or (insert other sought-after dolly here) saying that if they don't sell one of their dolls they are selfish for having two when this person really wants one. Not only does that attitude stink (I mean you'd never go off on one to the person ahead of you in the grocery store for buying the last two bottles of your favourite shampoo), but it is incredibly nasty to attack someone because they have a doll that you want. It's not their fault you weren't in the hobby at the right time and you don't know how hard they had to work to get hold of those dolls in the first place.

I guess it is nice to treat people the way you would like to be treated and buy only one limited even if you wanted two, but I think its safe to say that the majority of the people waiting in line for a doll wouldn't do that for you. I guess as long as you're happy with that choice, that's the right one for you, but if you were number 10 in a queue for 10 limited dolls and number 9 bought two of them, would you really be happy for them? I know I wouldn't be. I wouldn't chase them down the street or send them nasty PMs or call them selfish, but I would feel a little upset because there are only 10 of these dolls in the entire world and I had the opportunity to get one and someone else took that opportunity away...but if I'm waiting in line to order a doll during an ordering period, so the period is open until a dedicated closing time, someone can order as many identical dolls as they like - the more the merrier - because it won't affect my own dolly purchase.

I think there's a difference between buying a lot of limited dolls that are limited by number and buying a lot of limited dolls that are limited by time period. Ultimately though, if you have the funds and the desire, you can have as many identical limiteds as you like and you don't have to think of someone else...and it is up to the companies to monitor this. Some companies think that any sale is a good sale, so they don't mind if people want to buy multiples of a LE doll, other companies limit dolls to one per household. If the company is happy to sell more than one doll to one person, then we have to accept that possibility.

Yes, and a lot of people jumped on Glot and Glati when they were released. I was looking for a tiny, but when I saw chibi!Beryl, I had to have her because I missed out on an original Super Gem Beryl.

I don't know whether the market value of Heliot will really affect the value of Sard. In my opinion, I would much rather have Sard, I like his face and hooves much better than Heliot, so I can't see the after-market price of Heliot affecting the amount a Sard can command.

    14. Well look at it this way.

If you pay an inflated price for a doll say $2000 when it should only be going for $1500 ....in a few months the doll starts hitting the market place as they normally do and its only selling for $1500 that person is now at quite a loss. That person is less likely to to buy their next doll when they see it. They would rather sit back and wait too see where it goes.. So now that "elf" doll that is worth $1200 sits and sits and sits becasue all the people who are interested in it have been burned by inflated prices so they want the price to drop. The person selling the "elf" doll finely buckles and drops their price..so now that doll has devalued.

I hope that made sense .. I have seen it happen many times and talked to many people that its happened too.

IF you price gouge one person they are less likely to buy when they see something the first time its listed out of fear.

If 10 people are price gouged well you do the math..

    15. I think it's fine as long as it isn't being done with the intention of selling them for a profit to those that were unable to purchase one.

    16. when someone buys more than 1 of a limited doll will the full intention of selling it later on to make more money.. I consider that scalping, which is highly frowned upon in this community. If you just enjoy having the mould and want 2 I don't see why that's a problem. I've bought 2 woosoos second hand at different times and have absolutely no intention of selling them. Especially with dolls like the limited CPs, which came with 2 heads to begin with! I think people should be allowed to buy as many as they want of a mould if they genuinely like the doll.

I would say it's also hard when it comes to buying NEW limited dolls that come out, because they tend to look so much different in person than they do in pictures on the websites. at that point you have to ask yourself how much money you're willing to risk on this new doll, especially if you're wanting to buy more than one.

    17. I can see why you wouldn't be happy with the idea... but in my opinion its fine, so long as you love the two that you get its okay.

    18. I don't believe there's anything wrong with someone buying two and no more, but I would only buy one no matter what, because I'm a nicefag like that. xD

    19. If you're buying them because you love them and have plans for them - go for it. If you're doing it to try and make money... well you're just a wanker in my opinon. That being said, people can do whatever they want.

    20. Well, it's not something I would do, mostly because I don't feel the need or desire to have two of the same doll. There are too many other awesome dolls out there that I really want in my collection to spend the money on two or the same kind, limited or not. But I don't really think there's anything unethical about buying two limited dolls...UNLESS the company itself has placed a one-doll-per-person limit on the doll and you get your second by subverting the system somehow. I don't mean that you buy the second doll from someone else later on, but that you actually find a way to buy two dolls for yourself directly from the company. That would be wrong/unfair/unethical/whatever you want to call it.
