Is it "ok" to buy more than 1 ltd of a certain type of doll?

Dec 2, 2007

    1. I have a friend that has twins, I see no problem with it, a lot of casts take forever to sell anyway even limited one. They are first come first serve, there are so many to chose from they can pick something else just as you will if you couldn't get two of the same.

    2. If it were up to me, one limited per person would be fairest, so as many people can enjoy them as possible.

    3. I think it's all right... I have a pair of twins planned of a non-limited sculpt, but should I find a limited sculpt that I just NEEDED to have two of... I would want people to be understanding for me. That said, I hope it never happens- I like the idea of leaving more for people to enjoy.

    4. It wouldn't be fair in terms of proportional distribution, but last I remembered, people are free to purchase whatever they want and however many they want of it; that is fair. So by me, it's A-OK! I personally wish I had two Volks Tonys just because I love the mold so much. Just so long as it's appreciated, I don't see any wrong in owning more than one of a limited mold.

    5. It is also important in this discussion to remember that some dolls are not limited by quantity, but limited by time period to order instead.

In the quantity case, that person buying two may be reducing the number of dolls available to others. (Personally, I still don't really care too much -- buy one, buy a dozen, whatever floats your boat.)

In the order period case, it doesn't change anything at all about how many are still available for others to buy -- the company will make 3 or 300 or 3000 if that's how many are ordered by the deadline, and it doesn't change anything for other collectors. In fact, this means there are more of the dolls out produced over all to potentially make it to the secondhand market some day than there would have been if that person had bought only one.

In the interest of disclosure, I do not have more than one of any quantity limited sculpts, but I do have twins of three order period limited sculpts, so take that however you will.

    6. I myself see no reason why someone should not buy as many limited dolls as they can afford- why should they be guilty? Alot of the limited sculpts fall within an order time period, so it is a throw of the dice if you are lucky enough to be able to order during that time period.

I also have no problem with someone buying two of a doll- one to play with, one to sell later. I look at it as it's their money, it's their dolls. I am quite accustomed to this in the fashion doll world, and do not find it unusual- many of the fashion dolls like Sybarites, Tonners, Avant Guardes, etc. are purchased this way by serious collectors, and this is how they pay for their convention tickets, etc.

    7. Go for it! You know why limiteds are limiteds? Because then it becomes a free-for-all/first come first serve. Early bird gets the word, etc, etc. It doesn't matter why you do it - if you have the money, go for it.

Now, if you are doing it to scalp and rip people off...maybe you shouldn't, if it bothers you. But only maybe!! It's not really ripping people off, but an investment. So invest!

    8. I think it's perfectly okay for someone to buy more than one of a limited doll. There are no rules saying that someone can't do just that if they can afford it and want the dolls. If the doll companies wanted to limit the number of limited dolls purchased by a single buyer, that would be up to them. Outside of that kind of rule, I don't think anyone has the right to say whether or not someone should be able to buy multiples of a limited doll.

I think a lot of the complaints regarding limited dolls come from people wanting to own them, but not being able to afford them/not wanting to spend that much on a doll. In those cases, why worry yourself over what other people have? It's up to the individual owner to decide how many of a particular doll they can/want to buy. As some others have said, when it comes to limited dolls, it's really about who makes the purchase the fastest, and so long as they aren't buying limited dolls for scalping purposes, there's not really any harm in it. :)

    9. I think its okay. They're your dolls and you should be aloud to own as many limiteds as you want. It may not be fair because another person doesn't get a shot at it, but that's just the nature of limiteds, its not your fault!

    10. Another thing to bear in mind is that a lot of "Limited" dolls are not limited in edition SIZE, but instead they are limited by the company-imposed TIMEframe for ordering. In that case, even if I order 20 of the same limited edition doll, it won't cause anyone else to miss out on that same edition. The company will produce as many of that doll as people can order in that limited window of opportunity.

In THAT case, I'd want people to buy extras and make them available later. If I miss that window of opportunity to order a special edition, that would be the only chance I'd get later on, when other people sell their duplicates.

And in fairness, I'd have to expect to pay a healthy markup, for the chance to get one later, after they are no longer available from the company. I've paid a pretty bug chunk of a markup for limited editions that I missed the ordering window to purchase firsthand, and I'm honestly still thrilled to have them now, and still feel that it was completely worth it... to have a second chance to pick up those incredible editions that I missed the first time.

**EDITED TO ADD: Surreality, you beat me to it!

    11. (First, I'm surprised I sounded so angry in my last post - sorry about that)

But from reading today, I think Limited 'time-wise' and Limited 'item-wise' are two different things to me. In the item-wise discussion, I still feel that there should be a limit a company sets so that someone doesn't buy half the batch, or something (though that seems unlikely). Time-wise is a completely different animal. I'd say buy as many as you want, if it means they keep making them up until that time.

Even though I'm speaking from the perspective of 'LE's are nice to look at, instead of own', I still think it strange if someone buys four of the same doll. But when it comes down to it, I really don't care how many someone buys as long as they're going to do their best to bond and appreciate them, rather than do something deceitful with them (like selling them off to the highest bidder). That doesn't fly with me, which is a good part of why I feel companies should enforce limits to limited quantities. Sure, someone can always go around that by using someone else's account and whatnot, but still, that's two dolls instead of ten.

    12. I think if people have more than one limited edition doll because they truly love the doll and the way it looks, then it's fine. But I think it's really unfair if people buy multiple limited dolls, or any limited edition item, just to resell them for extremely high prices. It takes away an item from someone else who would have actually loved to have it, rather than sell it for triple what it cost or something ridiculous like that.

    13. I don't see a reason for not buying more than one? That is,if you ARE keeping those for yourself.I hate resellers honestly, don't fight the doll with people unless you WANT it for yourself.

    14. If the person is a Scalper, then I would say no, you shouldn`t be buying more than 1 limited doll.
Otherwise, I wouldn`t say no to both Time-frame or quantity-limited.

To Time-frame limiteds, you have a few weeks before the doll runs out. And for those, I don`t see what`s so Unfair about it. If you just didn`t have the money at the time it was released and you are green with envy, it`s just how it happened.

To Quantity-limiteds, the store will probably tell you you can get one only, and give others a chance. If you love the mold dearly and it`s made by Volks and you want to shell out lots of money, well, you can technically get three. (It requires you to go to a event(costing transportation, guidebook(s), item) and to your local SR/Sumika during the after-event (costing transportation, item), and going online on the after event) I could be jealous, but most people desperate enough for them will be shelling more money out to the company. Which is something I am not willing to do sometimes.
Anyways, not EVERYONE can do that. Most of the time quantity-wise limited twins are usually purchased secondhand, or with the help of someone else. It also means most of the time someone couldn`t bond with the poor kid and wanted to give it a new home. And someone who already had one (or more) just so happened to want one. Well, when it becomes secondhand, it`s a matter of first come first serve, so why not?

Note: I could be biased since I own 6 Remi/Colin by Volks (quantity-limited). It was possible to buy more than one at the SR`S (which I didn`t) due to unpopularity and overstock. Mine are actually all used kids, which I grabbed as fast as I could see them at the lowest price possible (too cheap yes). I love them all dearly though and do not intend on selling any of them. Are people jealous? Yeah, I`ve had many people say it`s unfair I have so many, but they really weren`t that popular when I purchased most of them, and those people saying it`s unfair were the people who found them fascinating after 9 months down the road of release.

    15. It doesn't matter to me. I believe that if you have the funds, and are there at the time then more power to you. Even if it's a scalper, technically they got it fair and square and it's theirs to do with as they please.

Yes, scalping's not cool, but at least the doll's on the market for someone willing to pay the price. :/ And if no one buys at the high price it eventually falls.

    16. It's hard for me to imagine owning two of the same doll, but I suppose if I had a plan for twins then I guess they would end up being different dolls after changing their hair or clothes, naming them, etc. If I had a plan in mind, I wouldn't think twice about buying up as many LE's as I needed for my own personal enjoyment. Buying LE's is a competition! (I buy a lot of hard to find things, so get revved up by the "thrill of the hunt".)

And I would totally boast about winning one or more LE's in this competition against all prospective buyers.:mwahaha
Consumerism is battle! All is fair in love and war! (but scalpers are definitely jerks. I buy out of love.:aheartbea)

    17. Go for it. If you have money for two out of the seventy five or however many limited editions, then get them. Unless the company has a rule that you are only allowed to buy one (if it's a quantity limited, not time frame) then I see no problem at all. It's your choice and first come, first serve. It may not be fair in some peoples eyes, but it's not really up to them if you want three of the limited dolls or not.

    18. My immediate response to this question is that, of course, it's alright. Initially, I didn't understand why this is an issue. But, then I think of the Volks Una (WS Kira) released as 100 dolls at a special event at Tenshi No Sato and I kind of understand. For people who really love this doll and yet are unable to get it due to secondary-market price, country of residence or simply because they weren't chosen to go to the event, I can understand a SMALL HINT of jealousy regarding someone having twins. I'd personally love to see twin Una's (so cute!!) but this isn't a dream doll for me. There are a lot of collectors who really fell for this doll, though, so I'm not sure how they would feel.

(Note: A limitation of a WS Kira of 100 by Volks is comparable to releasing only 100 Vesuvia in a special new resin color by Soom to only buyers who live in Korea and go to the Soom shop for a special event.)

Although people's possible resentment at seeing twins of these kinds of very, very rare dolls may be motivated by jealousy, I don't think it is solely due to this. Sometimes, it can be a feeling of hopelessness. It could be comparable to seeing a dream object (house, car, designer bag, etc.) and knowing deep down it can never be yours to have. This feeling can be amplified when someone else has two of that "holy grail" item. But, if people feel this way, those people need to find a way to deal with it constructively, I think. Perhaps contact the company with a personal plea for a wider limitation? Post a WTB ad? Save the money, even if it takes years? I think that anyone with enough patience will be able to eventually find any doll that person wants. Never lose hope. :aheartbea

I also feel everyone who wants a doll and has the money should be able to buy it. So, I really don't think having twins is even an issue with ordering periods, especially from companies like Soom who do offer a layaway option and offer everyone the same chance to buy a particular doll. It's only logical that people who can buy more than one doll will buy it if they love it (or even to sell on the secondary market to someone else who is willing to buy it and really loves it, too). And, I think that's great. I only wish more companies offered limited ordering periods instead of a lottery system (I hate the lottery system!!).
